Top queries – App function queries (86%) continue to outstrip app name queries (17%).ʼGames”, ʻfreeʼ and ʻfree gamesʼ maintain top positions while ʻsexʼ continues to downward trend. (p4)!

App monetization – Paid apps have demonstrated a substantial increase in downloads compared to prior months (+12.9%). (p5)!

Best in Category– The ʻentertainmentʼ and ʻgamesʼ categories lost 7.9% of the overall downloads while ʻbooksʼ and ʻreferenceʼ gained 5.1% combined . (p6)!

January Spotlight – !

Trending Search Terms !•  Fitness received an expected increase in search volume, however Angry Birds had a substantial! spike due to media coverage. (p8,9)!

Usage Trends by Time of Day !•  !!Fewest queries occurred at 2am and trended upwards throughout the day, peaking at 8pm!

!with a brief spike between midnight and 1am. (p10)!

Usage Trends by Day of Week !•  !36% of all search traffic occurred over two days, Saturday and Sunday. (p11)!

The “Top Queries” list shows the top 25 entries typed into the Chomp search box during January. Month-over-month ʻapp nameʼ searches continue to trend low with only 17% of total queries requesting a specific app name, i.e. “Facebook”. !

33% of all apps within iTunes are free apps with 50% priced $0.99 - $2.99. Free apps resulted in greater downloads over paid, however paid apps won 12.9% more of the total download volume compared to Decemberʼs data. !

Entertainment Category Trend Continues  

The snapshot below represents the most popular iTunes categories, ranked by download. !While the “Entertainment” and “Games” categories continue to hold the majority of market share, ʻbooksʼ saw the most growth with a 2.7% increase in downloads followed by ʻreferenceʼ. !

Media Impacts Search Trends  

The query for “angry birds” yielded significant traction at the end of January, presumably in !conjunction with 20th Century Foxʼs announcement that Angry Birds would make a cameo appearance in a Super Bowl ad the following week. !

Fitness Trends High Throughout January  

The following chart tracks search volume for queries containing the word “fitness”. All fitness related queries grew substantially in January. We attribute this trend to health seekers making New Years resolutions.!

Bulk of Searches Done on Weekends  

The following chart indicates search traffic patterns over a seven day week. In January, the majority of searches were done on the weekend with Sunday registering the highest number of queries 19.0%, followed closely by Saturday with 17.6%. Wednesday registered the lowest volume with only 11.2% of the weekly volume.!

People Want Apps Most after Dark  

The following chart indicates app search traffic patterns over an average 24-hour period. Usage peaked during the 8pm hour, with other notable spikes during the 2pm and 1am hours. The period between 2am-6am represents the lowest search volume period.!
