Apollonia is an ancient Greek name of the modern town of Sozopol. The town is seaside resort located 35 km south of Burgas on the southern Black
Sea Coast of Bulgaria.
Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on Bulgarian Thrace's
Black Sea coast. The first settlement on the site dates
back to the Bronze Age. Many anchors from the second and first millennium BC have been discovered in the town's bay,
a proof of active shipping since ancient times.
In 610 BC the site of today's Sozopol was founded colony
(polis) of Miletus Greeks named Apollonia Pontica. City
name comes from the God Apollo, considered the
protector of the colony.

In 1961 the Holy Synod of the church provides the building of St. Cyril and Methodius to create a museum that can be
stored and exposed archaeological materials found in Sozopol and the
surrounding area.
St. Ivan Island is a nature andarchaeological reserve. It is the largest of five islands in the Bulgarian Black
Sea coast.
