Welcome back to another

exciting Anoka hockey season!

As we pass the mid-way point of

trimester 1, the hallways are

beginning to stir with the

excitement for our Tornadoes

Hockey season. The boys have

been working hard in the off-

season to prepare for a run at a

Section Title and a chance to play for a State

Title. Coach Manthey and his staff are gearing up

and preparing the practice plans for the

upcoming season! The bleacher captains are

planning to draw large student crowds to each

game and show our school spirit in supporting

our Tornado team. The off season training was

good and the boys are ready to get on the ice and

begin their quest for a title.

We appreciate your support tonight of our

Tornado Hockey team and all of your positive

comments. I ask that everyone in attendance

cheer in a positive fashion for our team, coaches,

and refrain from negative comments toward

referees, opposing team and coaches, as well as

our team and coaches. Please show your Anoka

High School spirit and keep your comments

supportive in nature. As an Anoka Family, we

want to support each other at all times whether

in a win or a loss. Your support of our program is

extremely important. Thank you for all you do to

rally behind our team, coaches, community and

The traditions at Anoka

High School continue to

amaze me. I have met so

many wonderful alumni

who appreciate and

acknowledge the many

opportunities provided to

them from AHS. They

usually comment on how

they learned life lessons

through their sport. Hockey has a great

tradition; starting in 1946 at AHS where

hard-nosed hockey was the theme from

the past players. Hockey has evolved

with our players becoming more and

more skilled and I am excited to watch

the Tornadoes develop under the

leadership of Coach Manthey and his

staff. Best of luck to the young men as

they embark on this year’s hockey

journey. Go Tornadoes!

ANOKA HOCKEY HISTORYAccording to Craig Torbenson, the author of “TornadoMagic,” the first mention of hockey in Anoka was the1935-1936 season. During the 1930’s and 1940’s,Anoka High School was enrolled in hockey for some ofthose years but not in others. Anoka High School Hockeyprogram’s first season in the Minnesota State HighSchool League was 1953-1954 and was coached byCharles Bauer. Anoka High School had purchased useduniforms from the St. Paul amateur hockey team. Atthat time there was no youth programs in Anoka, justthe high school team.

Thank you to Coach alley, who made Anoka Hockey…hetruly is the father of Anoka Hockey! In 1954, the AnokaHennepin ISD 11 superintendent, Morris Bye, hired JimAlley as a teacher and a hockey coach. When CoachAlley was hired, Anoka had one dimly light outdoor rink,at what is now Sorenson Rink, with poor ice andsplintered boards. The prospect were even morechallenging when Coach Alley called his first playermeeting and realized that few players had decent skatesand none had played organized hockey. Needless to say,the team lost heavily, but learned along the way.

Coach Alley pleaded with the school district and the cityto construct several outdoor rinks with lights. Outdoorrinks were constructed at Sorenson, Lincoln, Franklin,Champlin and Wilson. He then went to work ondeveloping a youth program that would feed the highschool program. He was also responsible for purchasingall equipment for the youth and the high schoolprograms along with raising money to purchase theequipment and some indoor ice at either Aldrich Arenaor Wakota Arena. Coach Alley successfully built theAnoka Hockey Program because of his passion andvision for the game.

Coach Alley coached at Anoka High School from 1954through the 1963 season. In 1964, Joe Poole took overthe program and guided the Tornadoes for 12 seasons.Coach Poole recorded 133 wins and 94 losses. AfterCoach Poole stepped down in 1977, Terry Abram tookover for two seasons. Coach Abram recorded 24 winsand 17 losses during his tenure as the Tornadoescoach. Mark Kristo was hired and stayed on for oneseason, 1979-1980, and was 14 and 7. Jack Petersonwas hired to coach the Tornadoes after severalsuccessful state championships in the Anoka youthprogram. Coach Peterson guided the Tornadoes to theirfirst state tournament bid in 1985. The 1985Tornadoes captured third place in the state tournament.Coach Peterson coached for eight seasons and had arecord of 124 wins, 63 losses and 2 ties. Greg Rajenanstepped in after Coach Peterson and guided theTornadoes to a fifth place finish in the 1990 statetournament. Coach Rajanen was the Tornadoes coachfrom 1989 until 1993 and posted 71 wins, 51 lossesand 2 ties. In 1994, John Birrenkott took over the

program and recorded 88 wins against 39 losses and 5ties. Coach Birrenkott guided the Tornadoes to back-to-back state tournament appearance in 1997 and 1998.In 1997 the Tornadoes won the consolationchampionship and in 1998, the Tornadoes lost in thestate championship game against Duluth East 3 –1. In 1999, Todd Manthey took over the AnokaTornadoes Hockey program. Coach Manthey has guidedthe Tornadoes for 17 seasons, and continues to do so.In 2003, Coach Manthey’s team was crowned the statechampion in boys’ hockey. It was the first boys’ statehockey championship in school history. Coach Manthey’srecord, as of now stands at 195 wins, 184 losses and17 ties.

The Anoka High School hockey program has fielded aboys’ hockey team for the past 62 seasons. In that timeAnoka has had seven players drafted by the NationalHockey League:
