2016 Medic Mobile Annual Report Page 3We are all health workers
We are grateful to the health workers who wake up every day to serve patients and care for their neighbors. They know that other people rely on them, they accept this responsibility with grace and humility, and they do what they can to improve the lives of others. We are grateful that they have invited us into their communities
and allowed us to work alongside them. Because of these health
workers, Medic Mobile bears witness to acts of compassion and
care every day. This shapes our view of the world and gives us
hope.
We are grateful to our network of partners, organizations and
institutions working ardently to design better health systems and
deliver better healthcare. Based on the results that our partners’
models have achieved, their commitment to human-centered design
and systems thinking, and their appropriate obsession with data-
driven action, we believe that our partners’ collective ideas will
shape the future of community health. We know that dreams of
scale and sustainability cannot be achieved without our concerted
effort. Acting together with our partners, we reached 6,878 new
health workers and their communities in 2016.
Also, I am personally grateful to the Medic Mobile team. In
tumultuous times, my colleagues have focused on and cultivated
their humanity. Whether they are designing a new feature for
a community health worker, running risk analyses for a launch
of a new system, or finding and supporting mission-aligned
partners, they have kept the people we serve front and center. My
colleagues continue to surprise and inspire me.
This note of gratitude would not be complete without mentioning
the role of our funding partners. Put simply, their support allows
us to advance a mission to improve health in the hardest-to-reach
communities. We could not do this work without them. Their
financial backing supports a diverse team building world-class
technology with and for health workers. Our funding community
and their grantee-centric practices have allowed us to double our
impact in the past year.
Finally, we are grateful for the support from friends and family
members. I hope my sincere thanks reaches the spouses, parents,
sons and daughters, close friends, and all of the people who have
offered grace, hospitality, and help to health workers and Medic
Mobile teammates along the way. You all play a role in carrying
out this mission.

2016 Medic Mobile Annual Report Page 4We are all health workers
In 2016, our product made important shifts to support people-centered health systems delivering proactive, integrated care. Most notably, we transitioned from case-based care, such as registering and tracking a unique pregnancy, to people-based care, enabling us to register and care for people over time. This shift motivated a major update to our People tab and the introduction of household and person profiles. Health workers can now provide care with greater context about a person’s life, seeing information about family members, past health conditions, and demographics, all in the same place.
In support of more integrated care delivery, we’ve continued to add workflows that get us closer to our goals of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, improving child health, and strengthening community health systems. We’ve added support for postnatal care, family planning, and malnutrition and strengthened complex assessment protocols for childhood illness. Over the years, we’ve learned that a cornerstone of successful
community health programs is supportive supervision and integrated facility workflows, and we’re committed to supporting these best practices.
For our users, this means:
1. Improved workflows for community health workers and facility-based staff
2. Increased robustness of tools
3. More reliable SMS functions through a gateway built by Medic Mobile
4. Quicker and easier impact analysis with new middleware, which is also available for partners wishing to do deep analysis with SQL queries
We launched our first view of the app customized for CHW managers and nurses, including unique tasks, actions, and dashboards tailored for those roles. Nurses and CHWs can now work more closely together to follow up with high-risk and defaulting patients, and CHW managers can easily identify which CHWs are in need of further support. We will continue to develop features for managers and nurses, adding CHW profiles to gain even more insights about a health worker’s impact over time

Medic Mobile teams supported 31 new and existing projects across eleven countries in 2016. Our partners ranged from grassroots clinics and community-based organizations to large NGOs and governments. Represented below are three strategic initiatives outlining the breadth and scope of our global work.
1. In partnership with Living Goods (LG), we deployed a new version of our people-centered application to their network of 3,249 health workers across Kenya and Uganda. Living Goods has been a crucial design partner and pushed us to evolve our product. Over the course of the year, we developed, tested, and shipped countless features and functionalities for their cadre of community health promoters (CHPs), supervisors, and program staff. Our work with LG reinforces the importance of supervision for CHWs and highlights the power of real-time performance management to drive improved health outcomes in a community.
2. Our first four years of working with partners in Nepal demonstrated that designing solutions with Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs), piloting and testing them on the ground, iterating with user feedback, and forging local ownership achieves impact. These learnings enabled us to significantly scale our long-time footprint in Nepal from one district to four districts last year in partnership with local government.
3. Medic Mobile has been oriented to increasing equitable access and service of health care through our tools since we began our work. In 2016, we laid the groundwork to formalize our commitment to an equity lens across our toolkit: a new set of features and functionalities to target and serve the most vulnerable demographics within health systems. Our work last year moved this initiative from idea to kickoff: we began crucial design work, recruited learning and implementation partners, sought funding, and garnered broad-based support across the global health community. By harnessing the coverage and reach of CHWs, we can collect meaningful data in the last mile and gain deeper insights into disconnected communities. This work has already identified both gaps and bright spots for service delivery.
