In 2000, parents and agencies developed a vision and a plan to create a more seamless coordinated system of rehabilitation services:
“We believe in an integrated, accessible system of services and supports forchildren with rehabilitation/habilitation needs and their families that is
integrated with the broader children’s services system.”
One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre in collaboration with our community partners continues to evolve this vision and is proud of the work that occurs year over year to best utilize our resources and
expertise to be as responsive to children/youth and families as we possibly can.
O N TA R I O S P E C I A L N E E D S S T R AT E G Y
The past year has marked the beginning of a new Ontario Special Needs Strategy to improve services for children and youth with special needs and their families.
The goal of the Special Needs Strategy is to work across sectors and Ministries to strengthen the services provided to children and youth with special needs and their families by:
• takingstepstoimprovetheearlyidentificationofspecialneedsinchildren;
•workingwithcommunitiestoimprovehowserviceplanningiscoordinated;and
• removebarrierstoseamlessrehabilitationservices.
One Kids Place is working with its community and social services, children and youth, education and health service partnersinMuskoka,Nipissing,ParrySound;Cochrane-Timiskaming;andJamesBayserviceplanningareastodevelop proposals to advance:
• coordinatedserviceplanningtoimprovetheserviceexperienceforchildrenandyouthwithmultiple/complex specialneeds;and
• theintegrateddeliveryofrehabilitationservicestoensurechildren/youthhaveseamlessoccupational, physiotherapy and speech and language services from birth to school exit.
Local planning tables have been developing proposals for submission to the Ministries to meet the following timelines:
•CoordinatedServicePlanning–dueJune2015
• IntegratedDeliveryofRehabilitationServices–dueOctober2015
One Kids Place has been selected by the community to be the ‘Coordinating Agency’ responsible for coordinating service planning processes for children and youth with multiple and/or complex service needs throughout the Districts of Muskoka, Nipissing and Parry Sound. Proposal development work continues to ensure submission timelines are met with hopes that the work of the three planning areas is approved by the respective Ministries. One Kids Place welcomes this inter-ministerial work and is hopeful that barriers identified to achieving the best system possible can and will be addressed consistent with the spirit of the Call for Action to all of us.
In the spirit of integration and collaboration, One Kids Place has consistently put efforts towards enhancing innovation in program and service delivery, knowledge exchange and community capacity building. Consistent with the Ontario Special Needs Strategy, OKP has focused its efforts this past year on program and service initiatives that make sense for families.

Advancing the Integration of Children’s Rehabilitation Services On April 1, 2009, the NE LHIN facilitated an agreement between OKP and the North East Community Care Access Centre (NE CCAC) to establish a pilot project to achieve the most advanced functional integration model for paediatric services in the Nipissing and Parry Sound Planning Areas while improving school children access to a continuum of care across paediatric health care programs. This pilot project has evolved through with the NE CCACschooltherapistbecomingOKPemployeesonJuly1,2014.
Occupational therapist, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists and communication disorders assistants and therapy assistants serving preschool and school aged children work side by side to provide a continuum of therapy services.
Knowledge Exchange Opportunity OKPSpeechLanguagePathologists,CarolineHoughton-JonesandCindyDavis-Maille,deliveredapresentationto their peers at the September Pre-School Speech and Language Provincial meeting of Coordinators regarding how to deliver evidence-based Hanen parent training programs through video-conference. Given the rural/remote nature of the geography in Northeastern Ontario, OKP therapists developed an approach that maintained the integrity of the evidence-based Hanen programs while extending service delivery through video-conference. The presentation was well received by speech language pathologists from across the province and Ministry staff with a very high interest in using videoconferencing to increase opportunities for all parents to access workshops.
Collocation of children’s services in the District of Timiskaming OKP continues to work with Timiskaming agencies (North Eastern Ontario Family and Children’s Services [NEOFACS], Community Living Temiskaming, Timiskaming Child Care, Cochrane Timiskaming Children’s Treatment Centre, and Timiskaming District Social Services Administration Board) to bring together children’s services in an expanded NEOFACS site in Kirkland Lake to create a more accessible and seamless experience for children/youth and their parents/guardians requiring service.
“The therapists at One Kids Place are great and work hard with Freyja to make sure she has the equipment she needs to play, explore and grow with her friends. Being able to borrow and try different pieces of equipment from the Loan Equipment Program has meant Freyja being able to do crafts while standing at the table with her friends, have fun in the bathtub and play in the snow – things that all kids love to do!” Claire – Freyja’s Grandma
New Client Information Management System InOctober2014,afterten(10)monthsofcollaborativepreparation,OneKidsPlacelauncheditsnewelectronicclient information system, GoldCare/CRISP. This electronic client record is used by therapists as their day-to-day tool to record, schedule, complete documentation, report statistics and share information between team members (with appropriate parent/guardian consent) and is the organization’s primary electronic client information management system. The introduction of GoldCare/CRISP has also provided the opportunity for Children’s Treatment Centres across the Province to work together to evolve a more consistent approach to data collection and
analysis to more effectively address service delivery challenges.
Launch of P.L.A.Y.S (Parents Lending Autistic Youth Support at One Kids Place)
OKP was pleased to host and participate in the official office opening of our newest partner co-located in the North Bay site. The mandate of P.L.A.Y.S. Is to provide children and youth with autism and their families with equal opportunities to participate in activities and programs by providing quality respite support and by developing new programs. Given the significant role OKP has in service deliver to children and youth with autism, especially through the North East Regional Applied Behaviour Analysis Program and the already co-location of the local chapter of the Autism Association, this is a partnership that makes sense for families who have children/youth with autism.
Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation Internship Program (NOHFC) OKP was the successful recipient of two internship positions this past year:
• TransitiontoSchoolTherapyAssistantIntern:valuablesupportassistingtheteaminpreparinghighneedschildren and youth to be successful in a classroom setting
• LoanEquipmentProgramAssistantIntern:significantsupportevolvingtheexistingLoanEquipmentProgramtomost effectively meet the growing demands for specialized equipment
North East Region Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) Program – Community Capacity Building
OKPcontinuestoworkwithPayukotaynoHudsonandJamesBayChildandFamilyServicesinMoosoneeandMoose Factory to provide coaching/mentoring to staff on group service delivery, Applied Behaviour Analysis approaches and techniques to integrate into service for children and youth with autism. This past year there was a focus on community presentations on the practical strategies of ABA in day to day routines both at home and in the community. This presentation was given in Moosonee (19 participants) and Moose Factory (23 participants). The presentations were well-received by both communities. The community of Moose Factory, in preparation for the ABA staff coming to present, canceled exams for that day at the local High School so all teachers could attend. In both of these communities professionals and parents took part in these presentations and have requested that the ABA team return to continue informing the community.

Golf For Kids Annual Fundraiser The2ndAnnualGolfForKidsfundraiserwasheldinJune2014andwasahugesuccessraisingover$46,000.00.Thesuccess is thanks to the wonderful support from so many in our business community and our title sponsor the North Bay Battalion. These funds helped to expand supportive programs, services and purchase specialized equipment for the children, youth and families served by One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre. The event could not be possible without the tremendous support from the volunteer organizing committee and the many volunteers who make the day run smoothly.
We are truly thankful for the continued support we receive!
Once again, OKP in conjunction with our co-located community partners continues to touch the lives of over 10,000 children/youth annually who receive service from this exemplary model of integration and meaningful partnership.
These are just a few highlights from the past year … all made possible through the overwhelming support of our amazing Board, staff, volunteers, donors and our remarkable families.
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Riley, Board Chair Judy Sharpe, Executive Director
