1.7 Area of Green HouseGreenhouse agriculture “protected agriculture” aims at optimizing the cultivated area to the maximum extent possible in order to increase the production of the same unit as well as harvest early crop at non-traditional time of some vegetable crops that are difficult to cultivate in the exposed land exposed. This achieves major benefits, especially for export.
The farmer managed to divide plants according to their environmental needs into winter plants, which bear low degrees such as cabbage and cauliflower, and summer plants such as tomato, eggplants, cucumbers and water melons. This led the farmer to cultivate these varieties in the timing that suits its production.
The agriculture progress helps farmers recognizing the needs of these plants including the right temperature and humidity ... etc., thus providing an artificial climate to get a crop of summer vegetables at non-traditional time. This allows the farmer to replace the traditional agriculture methods with modern systems, which offer both winter and summer vegetables during the whole year.
In 2010, the number of greenhouses in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi equaled 8,363 with a total area of 2,825 donums, an increase of 11% compared to 2009. This means that there is a clear increase in the area of greenhouse agricultural in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Greenhouse area of land approximately constitutes 0.4% of the total area of agricultural holdings in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Classifying the greenhouse area by regions, results show that most of greenhouse area is located in Al Ain region with 1,632 donums or 0.22% of the total area of agricultural holdings, followed by the Western Region with 0.14% and the Abu Dhabi region with 0.02% of the total area of agricultural holdings in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

1.8 Forest TreesThe a forestation process in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has made significant progress; during the last decades large areas had been afforested. This revitalized the environment of the desert and encouraged people to pay more attention to agriculture as a fundamental that affect the country’s future and destiny in terms of deepening the link with land and achieving food security.
Forests are heavily spread in the Eastern Region surrounding Al Ain region, and in the Western Region up to the edge of the Empty Quarter. They also spread in Abu Dhabi city and its extensions in all directions, east, west and north.
These forests accommodate many wild animals, particularly various types of deer, such as the
Arabian oryx, the goitred gazelle and the Indian spotted deer, as well as different types of birds such as ostriches and different kinds of wild rabbits.
The policy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had an influence in terms of paying attention to agriculture. He said once at the Earth Summit in Brazil in 1992 that 140 thousand donums had been planted in the Eastern Region, full of trees till the edge of the Empty Quarter, known as the place with the driest and the harshest climatein the world.
The area planted with forests amounted to 1,693,500 donums in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the estimated number of trees is 17,408,021 in 2010. It is noticeable that most of the forest area is located in Al Ain region with 35.2% of the total forest area, followed by Abu Dhabi region with 32.5%, and the Western Region with 32.3% of the total forest area in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi

1.14 ChemicalsPesticides are widely used in the agricultural activity to combat various agricultural pests that are damaging crops, or reducing production. There are different types of agricultural pesticides, including pest pesticides, fungicides, spider’s pesticides and other. Pesticides are deemed to be the most commonly used.
The problem of pesticides lies in the way they are used by the farmer, where any increase may damage the plant. Thus, agricultural extension has a vital role in educating farmers on how to use pesticides and how to apply the proper amounts to avoid any potential diseases that might affect the plant.

2. Livestock Statistics
64 Annual Bulletin of Agricultural Statistics 2010
2.1 IntroductionThe livestock sector is one of the key elements responsible for achieving development and integration in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, it is deemed to be one of the most important sub-activities of the agriculture sector. Thus, providing data on the sector is very essential to prepare development plans and integrated programs that can be implemented in a scientific manner. This helps provide the basic food needs and meet the growing demand for livestock products due to population growth. Availability of information on livestock sector helps establish an economic and social structure that offers community members equal opportunity to develop their communities.
It is known that the march of human evolution began ascending since the adoption of grazing, and agriculture. While agriculture has captured most of the human interests, grazing remained concomitant to agriculture, securing the animal food for the society. Thus, large social groups were specialized in animal husbandry and grazing.
The Arab society was not moving away from this course, animal husbandry spread in the country side and rural areas, especially desert areas, which was and remains the basis of livestock including sheep, goats and camels. However, due to the economic and social development and the transition of agricultural production to the commodity form, in addition to other factors, animal husbandry declined in the countryside. As a result, many areas of the country side became a consumer of animal products.
This section includes detailed data on the numbers of livestock by type and region in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It also includes detailed data on the numbers of commercial farms and its area, capacity and production, in addition to data on the medical tests and follow-ups to maintain the health and safety of the livestock sector.

2.2 Structural Change in the Size of LivestockLivestock is envisaged as a tributary to economic development in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, hence it is a key source of income to rural and desert residents. As such, this sector received the attention of governments over the past few years by means of accredited policies, programs and plans, all of which yielded a steady growth in the number of livestock. The numbers of livestock rose from 2,078,608 goats, sheep, camels and cows in 2005 to 2,726,671 in 2009, at a rate of increase of 31.2%.
Livestock is distributed over the different parts of Abu Dhabi region with 2,305,603 sheep and goats; 42,992 cows; and 378,076 camels in 2009.
The overall number of livestock raised in Abu Dhabi region reached 570437 in 2009 at 21% of the aggregated number of livestock in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
This number is distributed in Abu Dhabi region as follows: 473,193 of sheep and goats at 83% of the overall number in the Abu Dhabi region, and 20% of the aggregated number in Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The number of cows reached 11,799 at 2% of the overall number in the Abu Dhabi region, and 27% of the total number of cows in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Lastly, camel number reached 85,445 at 15% of the overall number of camels in Abu Dhabi region, and 22% of the aggregated number of camels in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
In Al Ain region, the aggregated number of livestock amounted to 1,667,948 of camels, cows, sheep, and goats at 61% of the aggregated number of livestock in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The number of sheep and goats in Al Ain region amounted to 1,443,121 at 87% of the aggregated number of livestock in Al Ain, and 62% of the aggregated number of sheep and goats in Al Ain region. The number of cows reached 22,000 at 1% of the aggregated number of livestock in Al Ain region, and 51% of the aggregated number of cows in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The number of camels reached 202,827 at 12% of the total number of livestock in Al Ain region, and 54% of the aggregated number of camels in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
In the Western Region, the overall number of livestock reached 488,286 at 18% of the aggregated number of livestock in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The number of sheep and goats in the Western Region amounted to 389,289 at 80% of the overall number of livestock in the Western Region, and 17% of the aggregated number of sheep and goats in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The number of cows reached 9,193 at 2% of the overall livestock numbers in the Western Region, and 21% of the aggregated number of cows in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The number of camels in the Western Region reached 89,804 at 18% of the overall number of livestock in Abu Dhabi region, and 24% of the aggregated number of camels in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2009.
Foreign trade figures indicate that national exports of livestock in 2010 amounted to AED 112.3 million, compared with AED 107.9 million in 2009.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi livestock imports in 2010 amounted to AED 1891.8 million compared with AED 1784.29 million in 2009.
It can be said that the lack of integration between animal and plant production, contributes to the retreat of animal production, and increases the import of livestock in light of the limited fodder production as a result of water shortages due to the climate change that resulted in limited rainfall. Further, the shortcomings of the enacted policies to support the agricultural sector, and the cultural change pertinent to working in the agricultural sector and breeding livestock leads to a retreat in breeding livestock.

3. Fish Production Statistics
76 Annual Bulletin of Agricultural Statistics 2010
3.1 IntroductionThe Emirate of Abu Dhabi enjoys 500 km of coastlines, which are rich of fish and marine life. The territorial water of the Emirate contains over 200 islands of various sizes, variety of natures and historical and economic importance.
The amount of fish caught in 2010 equaled 6,333 tons, an increase of 6% compared to the quantity caught in 2009. The estimated value of production amounted to AED 124,4 million, an increase of 18.7% compared to 2009. These quantities were caught during more than 30,291 fishing trips; of which 82% were done by cruisers, while a motorboat fishing trips accounted for 18% of the total fishing trips in 2010.
The highest value of catch was for Scombridae with AED 45.9 million, or36.9% of the total catch in 2009, followed by Serranidae at the value of AED 34.7 million or 27.9%, and Carangidae with AED 14 million, or 11.3% of the total catch in 2010.
The fisheries that had been used are traditional fisheries consisting of two types of small boats:
Cruisers: A small-sized vessel, with 6-8 meters length. The fishing trip using this type of boat last between 6-8 hours, and it requires 1-4 fishermen. Cruisers have contributed 59% of the total catch in 2010.
Lynches: are larger boats compared with cruisers with a length of 12-22 meters and are equipped for the storage and preservation of fish. The fishing trip last between 3-5 days and it requires 4-6 fishermen. Lynches accounted for 41% of the total catch in 2010.
The largest percentage of fish delivery was in the Free port with 2331 tons with 36.8% of the total catch, followed by Al Sader port with 1207 tons or 19.1%, and the port of Delma port with 17.3% of the total catch in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2010. The ports of Al Marfa, Al Bateen, Al saadiyat and Sila accounted for 13.9%, 5.5%, 3.6%, and 3.8%, respectively.
In terms of value of the deliveries, the Free port had the highest value with 44.3% of the total sales, followed by Al Sader port with 27.7%, and Delma island with 9.9% of the total value of fish caught in 2010. Al Marfa, Al Bateen, Al Saadiyat and Sila accounted for 6.9%, 6.3%, 2.9%, and 2%, respectively.
The largest amount of caught fish was in January, 2010, with 1386 tons or 21.9% of the total catch in 2010. The lowest amount came during the summer months starting from July till September, 2010. The reason is the movement of the fish to the deep water and the cold weather, which increase the difficulty of finding fish.
Data show that the traditional “Kerkor” cages had the largest amount of fish caught with 2,580 tons of fish or 40.7% of the total catch in 2010, followed by Al Haddak with 21.3% and Aldafarh with 21.2%. Albraism, Nassab, Hazra and Sakar accounted for 9.3%, 4%, 2.4%, 1.0%, respectively.
Results indicate that fishing using lynches focused mainly on three types of benthic fish, Serranidae with 32.6%, Haemulidae with 24.4%, and Lethrinidae with 23.1% of the total amount of fish caught using the lynches.
Meanwhile, fishing using cruisers focused on two types of fish, Scombridae with 43.6%, and Carangidae with 18.9% of the total quantity of fish caught using the cruisers.

96 Annual Bulletin of Agricultural Statistics 2010
5.1 Definitions and Classifications Agricultural Holding: an economic unit for agricultural production that is subject to a single administrative unit, and consists of all or part of the lands utilized for the purposes of agricultural production, regardless of ownership, legal form or area. The single unit may be under the control of an individual or a family, or may be shared by two persons or two families or more. It also may be under the control of a clan or a tribe, or may be subject to the control of a legal person such as a company or a cooperative society, or governmental agency. A holding may consist of one piece (partial holding) or more that is located in one or more of the separated areas of a regional or administrative jurisdiction, provided that all holdings share the same production methods utilized by the holding such as laborers, buildings, machines, or draft animals. Sharing the same production methods must be evident to an extent that justifies considering all land pieces an integral part of one economic unit. The economic units whose activities are confined to the hereunder economic activities may not be regarded as agricultural holdings; as such economic activities are located outside the agricultural framework:
1. Hunting, and breeding game.
2. Exploiting forests or wood cutting.
3. Fishing.
4. Agricultural services.
Part of Holding: it is a piece of land that is separated from other holding lands, whether it be land not under the control of the holding owner, or separated by a railroad, or a public road, or by forests, or anything similar.
Aggregated Holding Area: it is the overall area of all pieces of land comprising an agricultural holding. Any land that is owned by the holding owner or leased to others should not be accounted for in calculating the holding area. The aggregated holding area consists of the farmyard, and the area upon which a farm buildings are erected. Further, the dwelling of the holding owner is also calculated within the holding area, unless it is erected outside the holding parameters (i.e. in a residential area of a village or a close city), and not for residential purposes. The aggregated holding area should include the area cultivated with crops during the reference period, and the farmed area which is not cultivated yet. Deserted land should not be taken into account during the reference period. Holding owners should not also take into account their estimated share of land used as pastures. The aggregated holding area should be equal to the total land area used for different purposes.
Agricultural Land: it is the collective number of lands that cover most of the land uses, consisting of temporary farming land, land for permanent crops, permanent grazing land, fallow land, and other lands not specified elsewhere.
Land Not Suitable for Agriculture: it is part of the aggregated area of a holding that is not suitable for any farming due to a permanent or temporary obstacle, such as salinity, rocky terrain, and extreme slopes.
97
Livestock Owner: it is the person who has administrative authority on the operation of a livestock holding. It is also the person who takes the key decisions pertinent to the use of available resources, and is responsible for all technical and economic liabilities related to the holding. He may assume all responsibilities or share part of such responsibilities with others. Any person in possession of ten or more sheep or goats, or both; or owns one or more cows; or three or more camels; or five or more bee hives; or 30 or more hens; or a poultry farm; or a hatching facility may be considered a livestock owner.
Aggregated Animal Production: value of goods and services produced during a set period of time as a result of undertaking a productive activity, whether primary or secondary, consisting of produced goods and services for personal use.
Agricultural Prices: it is the exchange value of agricultural products that is expressed in the value of money (dirham/Kg). The used agricultural prices are the prices of agricultural products at central markets or the gate prices at farms.
Index: indices are defined as a tool to measure relative variation in the value of phenomena from time to time, or from one place to another. An index is a relative figure that is attainable through a variable percentage, or apparent value, or quantity during a period of time to the same variable or apparent value or quantity during another period of time. The first period is regarded as the base period, and the second is called the comparative period.
Agricultural Pesticides: any substance or mixture of substances that is used for the prevention, control, or eradication of pests that include transmitters of human or animal diseases, in addition to the undesired species of animals and plants. Pesticides may cause damages during production, or upon preparation, storage, transport, or marketing of food commodities or agricultural goods. Pesticides may be used in spraying agricultural animals to combat pests, spiders, and other types of pests that live on or in their bodies.
Animal Communicable Diseases: include the plague of ruminants, foot and mouth, bovine viral diarrhea, blood poisoning, Pleuropneumonia, smallpox, dermatitis.
