From Fr. Joe “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it
again: rejoice!” These lines of St. Paul’s letter
to the Philippians (Phil 4:4-7), from the second
reading of this 3rd Sunday of Advent, may
seem odd coming from someone who was
writing from prison. After all, what did Paul
have to rejoice about? And a line or two later
he says, “Have no anxiety at all”. Is St. Paul off
his rocker?
Thankfully, we ourselves aren’t sitting in
prison right now, but we sure have other things
to be anxious about: world news is disturbing;
the economy is still lean; many people remain
out of work or under-employed; you or
someone you love may be dealing with an
illness, a death, or loss of a close relationship;
…. etc. And on top of these, Christmas is less
than two weeks away and I’M NOT READY YET!
So where does Paul get off saying: “Have no
anxiety at all”?
St. Paul, however, goes on: “but in
everything, by prayer and petition, with thanks-
giving, make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all
understanding will guard your hearts and minds
in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7) Even the 1st reading of this Sunday states:
“Fear not, be not discouraged! The LORD, your
God, is in your midst”. (Zephaniah 3:16-17)
And, God is in our midst now; not just for those
who lived with the historical Jesus 2000 years
ago; and not just when our LORD comes at the
end of time; but here and now. How? Through
the people we come in contact with in our
lives, through the Body of Christ which is the
Church, through the Sacraments, and
especially in the Eucharist we receive and
share.
This all sounds very nice (and for some it may
sound like just more: blah, blah … blah); but
what are we — you and I — supposed to
REALLY do in the face of all that’s going on in
our lives? The people in this Sunday’s Gospel
(Luke 3:10-18) who knew John the Baptist
asked the same thing: “What should we do?”
John essentially replied: Be nice. Share. Don’t
cheat. Don’t take what isn’t yours. Don’t lie.
Be grateful for what you have. (Hmmm, most, if
not all, of these things we learned back in
kindergarten.) Could it really be that simple?
As my Dad used to say so often (and which
REALLY annoyed me, mostly because it was
TRUE): You never know until you try.
Let’s try … together.

From Fr. Joe—Continued (Continued from Page 2)
The 4th Week of Advent is short this year
(Christmas Eve is that Monday, and Christmas
Day the Tuesday of that week). Though there
have been increased hours available for
confessions during Advent, there will be an
additional block of times next weekend as a
f inal opportunity before Christmas.
The angel statues which now adorn the
tabernacle at St. Anne Church of All Saints
Parish were presented and blessed at the
December 6th noon Mass before being placed
by the tabernacle. What follows is the blessing
prayer used that day:
O God, you have created the Angels to
protect, to guide, to proclaim your will, and to
give glory to you. Your angels have done your
will in the unfolding of salvation history. They
have guarded the way to paradise; guided
Abraham, our father in faith; adorned the Ark
of the Covenant you made with your people;
visited the Blessed Virgin Mary to request her
participation in bringing your Son into the
world. The angels gloriously announced the
birth of your Son to lowly shepherds, and
warned Joseph in a dream to protect his family
by fleeing to Egypt. Your angels attended your
Son after he was tempted in the desert by a
fallen angel, Satan, the Prince of Darkness. An
angel guarded the tomb of your Son, and after
his resurrection, showed your disciples the
empty tomb. And the angels will lead the
unending chorus of praise and worship in
heaven.
As we bless these two angel statues, which
will adorn our tabernacle in this sanctuary, let
them be a symbol of the reverence which is
due to the Body of Christ your Son, and a sign
for us to protect the Eucharist from any
disrespect and to never let it be profaned.
As we carry out our earthly duties, may we
be filled with the Spirit of Christ and keep our
eyes fixed on the glories of heaven, where you
Father, receive those who will reign with your
Son, for ever and ever.
AMEN.

This Advent, prepare for the Christmas Season by reading “Signs of Life” by Scott Hahn. Did you pick up our newest book in our book program
for Advent? If not, you need to.
I challenge all parishioners to pick up this book and
read chapter 2, on the “Sign of the Cross.” It’s only 4½ pages long and
will probably take you no longer than 15 minutes to read. In these 4½
pages you will find great meaning in this simple gesture that you may
have been doing all your life. We sometimes forget or maybe have never
been taught the meaning behind our gestures. I challenge you, pick up
this book, read a chapter, and see what you can learn from one chapter
and very little time. Let me know what you think of this chapter by email-
ing me your thoughts, [email protected]. You may just find
you want to read more than one chapter.
God bless and Happy Advent, Jackie Benson

Bishop Robert Barron Word on Fire— Advent
Matthew 15:29-37 Friends, our Gospel tells about the feeding of
the four thousand. Jesus instructs the crowd to
sit on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and
a few fish, Jesus makes a meal that satisfies the
enormous crowd. They are hungry, tired, and
worn out from their exertions, and Jesus gives
them sustenance for the day.
For Thomas Aquinas, the great metaphor for
the Eucharist is sustenance, food for the
journey. The Eucharist is daily food, sustenance
for the journey, nourishment to get us through
the day-to-day. How effective would we be if
we never ate, or ate only on special occasions
and in a festive environment? Not very. So, in
the spiritual life, we must eat and drink or we will
not have strength.
Is this just meant in some vague symbolic way?
No, rather in a vividly analogical way. For just as
the body needs physical nourishment, the spirit
needs spiritual nourishment, and there is no
getting around this law.
Sometimes we think it’s no big deal if we stay
away from Mass and refrain from receiving
Communion. Think again!
Are you taking the time during this Advent Sea-
son to prepare for Christmas. Would you like to
be free from sin when you go to
Christmas Mass. Take time to ask the Lord for
forgiveness of all the sins you are holding. Did
you know that if you miss Mass it is a mortal sin?
You should not receive communion with a
mortal sin on your soul. Take the time and ask
for forgiveness if you hold this sin or any other.
Confession schedule is listed on page 3. The
healing power of forgiveness through the
sacrament of reconciliation is awesome. Just
do it! (Most people are held back because
they can’t remember the act of contri-
tion. There are copies in the church and Fr.
even has copies in the confessional if needed.)
