Why are Clouds Important?

• Understanding the different types of clouds is important in the safety of every flight.

• “Clouds are visible indicators and are also indicative of future weather.” (PHAK 11-15)

• Could decide whether you embark on your flight or not.

Cloud Types

• Classified based on height– Low– Middle – High – Vertical Development

Page 8: All About Clouds

Classifications (appearance and composition)

• Cumulus- cotton balls

• Stratus- layered

• Cirrus- fibrous, wispy

• Nimbus- rain-bearing

• Lenticular- lens shaped

Composition

• Low Clouds- water droplets, supercooled droplets

• Middle Clouds- water, ice crystals, supercooled droplets

• High Clouds- ice crystals

• Vertical Development- contain all types

Page 11: All About Clouds

Clouds with Vertical Development

• Indicate an unstable atmosphere

• Can produce lightning, hail, tornadoes, gusty winds, and wind shear

• Very turbulent

• Extremely hazardous

Page 12: All About Clouds

Closing

• Clouds can indicate imminent weather conditions and must be considered before every flight.

• Clouds with vertical development are the most hazardous and produce intense weather phenomena.

• Any Questions??
