On Sunday night, theAlbuquerque FilmFestival will presentGospel Hill, the

    torial debut by famedGiancarlo Esposito.

was well prepared.appearing in severalr films from The Usualects to Do the Rightg and several TVs such as NYPD BlueCSI: Miami, he had

    xperience in front of thera.

e film tells the story of

two men in the South andtheir intersecting lives. One is the son of a slaincivil-rights worker (playedby Samuel L. Jackson) andthe other a terminally illsmall-town sheriff. Its allset against the backdropof a love story and the

    gentrification of a smallSouthern town.

It was filmed in Fort Mill,S.C., because, Esposito said,it had the feeling and the lookof a fictional town of the oldSouth trapped in the modernworld.

There were no jobs and a

lot of gentrification, he said.My film was about losing

jobs to other countries andaddressing gentrification.

His character in GospelHill, Dr. Palmer, buysproperties in a historicneighborhood to turn it intoa golf course, much to thechagrin of the locals.

For me, the gentrificationwill homogenize. It doesntrelate to color, it relates tomoney. Palmer buys otherAfrican-American homesand property to get ahead,he said.

Esposito cast an all-stargroup in the film, fromAngela Bassett to Glover andJackson.

Not long after SundaysAlbuquerque premiere ofthe film, it will see a limitedtheatrical release, he said.

Esposito also will moderatea workshop on acting at2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8,for the Albuquerque FilmFestival at The Cell theater.

When two peoplepassed out thisyear at thepremiere of

Grace at the SundanceFilm Festival, director PaulSolet didnt know how to takeit.

    I was concerned when that

happened, Solet said.Is it a good sign when

people pass out at yourmovies premiere?

It was one of the midnightfilms and had that BlairWitch slot, and they reallytook care of us, Solet said.At that first screening(this year) we had two menpass out from the intensityof the film. I think peoplehave passed out before. Ithink someone passed out atReservoir Dogs, but nevertwo.

    Grace is an intense

film, to be sure, but I wasconcerned that it would givethe wrong idea, Solet said. The film, after all, isnt likeSaw or Rosemarys Baby, but it does have its moments.

Grace will have its NewMexico premiere on Friday,Aug. 8, at the AlbuquerqueFilm Festival at 9 p.m. at the

KiMo Theatre, just one weekbefore it goes into a limitedtheatrical release.

After losing her unbornchild, Madeline Matheson(Jordan Ladd) insists oncarrying the corpse to term.Following the delivery, thechild miraculously returns

to life with an appetite and Matheson is faced withan ultimate decision.

The problem is, Mathesonis a vegan who wouldnthurt a f ly. Shes the sort ofwoman who gets grossedout by cooking meat for herhusband.

Its not a political film. Iminterested in entertainingyou and getting under yourskin and making you thinka little bit. I really believethat a great part of myresponsibility as a directoris to create a world thats

complete enough that youcant get out.

Solet wrote the scriptwhen he moved from hishometown of Boston to followhis filmmaker dreams in LosAngeles.

When I got here, well,a good script sells itself,he said. But its harder

    to convince thdirect it.
