Crayons
In a hospital waiting room one often experiences long
periods of uneasy monotony punctuated by sharp mo-
ments of fear. Monotony during the operation, fear at
the initial appearance of the doctor bringing “the news.”
On this day, during the monotonous period, a young
girl, intent on her coloring book, invited me to join in
coloring a page of leaves. I knew right away we were in
trouble. She had a sandwich bag of crayons, numbering
a dozen. Her intent was to color the leaves a number of
shades, yet only about three of her crayons were the
proper color. Having used the green, red, and yellow,
she moved to the silver, purple, and fuchsia. She would
color a leaf, passing the crayon to me with the invita-
tion to do the same. Before long, the leaves took on a
beautiful, if unnatural, appearance, adding cheer to a
hard place. Still, the New England travel bureau proba-
bly would not call on us to prepare their fall brochure.
We obviously knew little about proper leaf protocol.
The church plays out its existence in some tough places.
And of the sometimes small, sometimes numerous re-
sources of our membership, we define the proper use of
our crayons. Pastors and staff lead worship, sit in hospi-
tals, visit the needy, do the sacraments. Using the
wrong people in these roles might mis-color our expec-
tations. And so we color as expected, until those of
child-like faith add their influence, sometimes in unex-
pected and untraditional ways. They hear the call of
Christ to follow, and do so in every place the Gospel is
needed. Using all the crayons in the box colors all
things new. Allowing the influence of all rather than a
few makes faith real.
In a preschooler’s world, every crayon has its possibili-
ties. In God’s world, every person has his or her poten-
tial. It is the difference in using a few crayons, or every
crayon in the box. I agree with my young friend -better
we use them all.

WORDS TO LIVE BY ‘Today is the point to which all your yesterdays
have been leading since the hour of your birth. It
is the point from which all your tomorrows will
proceed until the hour of your death. If you were
aware of how precious today is, you could hard-
ly live through it. Unless you are aware of how
precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living
at all.’

Ministry Meetings
Notes from Tim
Recently, I was reading about the life of Thomas
Barclay who was, for many years, a Presbyterian
missionary to Taiwan. Until his death in Taiwan, he
dedicated his life to the modernization of Taiwan’s
culture, educational system, and missionary work for
over sixty years.
Following his death, a well worn, yellow-with-age,
paper titled “My Decision” was discovered among his
personal things. Barclay had first signed the paper on
his 16th birthday when he was a student at Glasgow
University. Then every year on his birthday he
added his signature again right through to his 85th
year!
In the decision Barclay drew up for himself, he surren-
dered his life to God and made the Lord’s work the
singular priority of his earthly existence. He conse-
crated to God all he was and all he had—his mind, his
body, his possessions, his time. Barclay ended the
commitment by saying: “To Thee I leave the manage-
ment of all events and say without reserve, ‘Not my
will, but Thine be done…’”
It is good for us to renew our vows and commit-
ments to the Lord periodically. In our ritual services
of Baptism, The Lord’s Supper, Profession of Faith,
and through Membership (gifts, time, and talents) in
Pfafftown Christian Church, we do formally reaffirm
our commitment. But perhaps it should be a daily
(and very personal) reaffirmation also. As with
Thomas Barclay’s decision we can also, through our
own daily devotions, prayers, and moments with
God, renew our vows of our own Christian commit-
ment.
There are mountain peaks and valleys in the spiritual
pilgrimages of all of us—but we need to remember that
the most significant imperative of the Christian life is
faithfulness. Occasionally the flame of our devotion to
the Lord and His work may flicker, but we fuel that
flame as we daily, hourly, open ourselves to His Grace
and intentionally reaffirm our willingness to live
Christ’s love in the world.
See you in church this Sunday,
Tim
BACK-TO-SCHOOL PROJECT!
Summer break marks the time for us to
start the “”back-to-school” supplies drive.
We will sponsor the faculty and students of Old
Elementary Richmond School.
The principals and teachers are so appreciative
of your generosity! Remember, teachers often
have to pay for classroom supplies out of their own
pockets.
Beginning this month and through August 13
you will have the opportunity to help again with
this worthwhile cause!
A list of school items will be posted in the
narthex. Items teachers generally have to buy out-
of-pocket are hand sanitizers, Kleenex, items for
special projects. These items or a gift card would
also be greatly appreciated.
Bring your items to church and place them in
the “bus” just outside the Narthex. Items need to
be at the church NO LATER than Sunday morning,
August 13. We will dedicate these items and ask
God's blessings to be with children everywhere as
they begin a new year of learning!
Thank You…
