Dear Colleagues,
As predicted, the Trinity Conference set the toneforanauspicious2013.Withover300delegates in attendance, ourpartnershipwithTheMoodie Report and the gracious hosting of the Abu Dhabi Airports Company, weweretreatedtothelatest developments by airports, retailers and brand manufacturersaswellasreceived valuable lessons on the strategic use of social media and consumer technology. We also took the opportunitytobestowtheASQAssuredcertificationon King Fahd Airport, Damman and on the Abu Dhabi Airports Company for achieving the objective standardsofservicequalitymanagement.Thelinkbetweencommercialsuccessandservicequalityisastrongoneandwehaveintensifiedeffortstodeepentheunderstandingof the commercial side of airport management through educational programmes and conference content.
Global Training has also gotten off to a strong startwith100coursesalreadyscheduled.Wehave a coordinated plan of engagement and growthwiththeInternationalCivilAviationOrganisation(ICAO)whichseesACIasoneofitssolutionproviderstoimproveknowledgeofICAO standards and recommended practices
aroundtheworld.Wearejoinedwiththeminthe commitment to “leave no airport behind,” withourACIFundandcomplementaryDevelopingNationsAssistance(DNA)
programme and their AMPAP scholarship programme aswellasthelow-costoptions offered by the On LineCenter(OLC)whichisdeveloping more and more content.Wewillsoondeliverourfirstin-personcoursein Arabic, bringing our language coverage to four, withmoretocome.We have also gotten started on the project endorsed by the Members at the General Assembly to promote the use of Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) as a means for aviation stakeholders to gain
efficienciesandbetterrecoverfromirregularoperations by using common technology protocols to communicate across the airport platform in real time.
2013alsostartedwithanAirportExcellence(APEX)inSafetyreviewattheHenriCoandaInternational Airport in Bucharest, Romania, thefirstofatleast18safetypeerreviewsthisyear. ICAO has been a strong supporter and partnerwithusatboththeHeadquartersandRegional levels.

for airports and their communities and passengers. In addition to the delivery of valuable industry tools, solutions and publications that include our seminal economics reports, and the upcoming emergency preparedness handbook and economic regulatory manual, an organizational focus this year is for ACI to assume its role as a guardian of the interests of the travelling public.ACIwillprovidebestpracticeguidancefor airports on the facilitation of passengers duringirregularoperationsandwilladvocatefor sound policies at the ICAO Air Transport Conference in March. The A-CDM and the related project to help airports implement the Airport Community Recommended Information Services (ACRIS) are key elements of the initiative.
We are also formulating our approach to protect airport commercial revenue from the impending assaults arising from discussions at the World Health Organisation regarding alcohol and tobacco, from airlines that lobby for single till in airport economic regulatory schemes and place restrictions on passengers effectively prohibiting them from shopping at the airport and from governmental entities thatcauselongprocessingqueuesreducingpassenger satisfaction and propensity to buy.Theseareamongthetopicsthatwillbecovered at the 5th annual ACI Economics and Finance Conference in Singapore, 6-8 March andtheICAOConferenceinMontreal18-22March.

On18January2013atthestar-studded10thAnnualLivingLegendsofAviationAwardsattheBeverlyHiltonHotelin California, Lou Turpen, President of the San Francisco AeronauticalSocietywasinductedintotheLivingLegendsof Aviation. Lou served as a member of the Airports Council InternationalWorldGoverningBoardfrom1999through2004.
Louwaspresentedtheprestigiousawardandmedallionby“TheOfficialAmbassadorofAviation”,JohnTravolta,actorandwell-knownpilot.Consideredthemostimportantrecognitioneventinaviation,TheLivingLegendsofAviationAwardsrecognizessignificantcontributionsandachievementsduringaviation’ssecond hundred years.
AsthefirstairportexecutivetobeinductedintoTheLivingLegends of Aviation, Lou joins the ranks of astronauts Dr. Buzz Aldrin,NeilArmstrong,GeneCernanandColonelFrankBorman;industry leaders that include:

Lou holds a Civil Engineering degree from the United States Air Force Academy, a Masters degree in Business Administration and currently holds several Professional Engineering registrations. On9January2013inMontreal,Canada,AirportsCouncilInternational (ACI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding withtheInternationalCivilAviationOrganization(ICAO)and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) establishing the global Young Aviation Professionals Programme.Theprogrammewillattractwell-qualifiedyoungaviationprofessionalswhohaveaninterestininternationalcivilaviationpolicydevelopmentandwillbringthose professionals to Montreal to the three organizations.
“ACIisproudtoworkalongsideICAOandIATAaswecontinue to develop professionalism in the industry,” said ACI World Director General Angela Gittens. “The global aviation business is becoming more complex and for thefirsttimethiswillgivethebestandthebrightestanopportunity to participate in its future development from three perspectives.” ApplicationsfortheYoungProfessionalsProgrammewillbeacceptedbeginningearlyin2013andtheselectedcandidateswillworkforfourmonthseachatACI,IATAand
ICAO.Theywillcontributetoworkprogramsrelatingtoaviation safety, security and environment focusing on the inter-relationshipsbetweenregulatoryactivitiesandtheairport and airline industries. TheprogrammepairswellwiththesuccessfulAirportManagement Professional Accreditation Programme (AMPAP)whichisastrategicinitiativeofICAOandACIlaunchedin2007.AMPAPisavailabletoairportexecutivesaround the globe and graduates earn the prestigious designation of International Airport Professional (IAP). GlobalpassengertrafficcontinuedalongthegrowthpathforthemonthofNovemberincreasingby+3.2%fromthepreviousyear.Amajorcontributortotheon-goinggrowthwastheinternationalpassengermarketwithgainsof+6%whereasdomestictrafficexperiencedonlya+1.1%gain.With the perpetual concerns regarding the Eurozone, domestictraffichasbeenstifledwithacontractionof-5.5%inEurope.Moreover,althoughgrowthprospectsarerelativelylimitedinNorthAmericasincetheregionisalreadyworkingatcapacity,thefiscalcliffisnotalleviatingthestandstillwithrespecttoyearoveryeargrowth.Conversely, international passenger markets in Asia-Pacificshowedrobustgrowthat+11.5%.Morespecifically,thegrowthvelocitystemsfromairportsbasedinSouth-EastAsia.KualaLumpur(KUL)andSingapore(SIN)eachreporteddoubledigitgainsof+13.1%and+12.2%respectivelyforthemonthofNovember.AlthoughBangkokexperiencedgrowthof+20.6%,itshouldbenotedthattrafficwassignificantlycurtailedinNovember2011duetothedestructivefloodsaffectingtheregion. Air freight markets posted stronger gains relative to previousmonthsat+1.8%,dueinpartmainlytoarecoveryin shipments through the holiday season. This revival is
mainlyreflectedintheNorthAmericancontextwheretheairfreightvolumeincreasedby+3.5%.Africa,LatinAmerica-CaribbeanandEuropeeachsawdeclinesof-4.6%,-1.7%and-0.9%respectively. ACIWorld’sEconomicsDirectorRafaelEchevarnecommented, “Though air freight markets posted an overall netgainforthemonthofNovember,theresultsaremixedacrossregionswithoverallflatgrowthinfreightvolumethroughout2012ascomparedtothepreviousyear.Irrespectiveofthegeneralriseinbusinessconfidence,itisstilltooearlytoprojectsustainedgrowthbasedonthepresentconditionsandrisks.Whilewealsoseedomestic passenger markets in retreat due in part by the economicuncertaintypervadingacrossEuropeandNorthAmerica, international travel remains relatively buoyant and unencumberedwithgainsofalmost+6%fortheyearasawhole.Thisprovidessomereassuranceintheresilienceoftheindustryasawholesinceinternationaltrafficcontainsmorethan40%ofglobalpassengermarket.”
