A TIMELY REMINDER
A vintage Rolex Oyster wrist watch, worn by a Japanese prisoner-of-war in Changi, is to be sold atChorley's along with many other longcase, bracketand mantel clocks, barometers, pocket watches andpocket barometers in Chorley’s two-day sale onWednesday and Thursday, 25th & 26th September2013.
The owner, Hereward Wagner, who owned a rubberplantation in the Federated Malay States, spent themajority of the Second World War incarcerated inthe Prisoner of War camp, his cherished watch theonly reminder of his previous life. The watch (Lot483), with cushion shaped case and champagne dialsigned Oyster Rolex, is expected to sell for between£300-500.
The vintage timepiece was passed by Hereward to
his son Frank, who spent a lifetime collectingwonderful pieces of horology. A keen member of theBritish Horological Institute, he had a leading rolewithin the local BHI group arranging numerousvisits to local horological attractions including thetower turret clocks of Tewkesbury Abbey, GloucesterCathedral and, of course, revelled in his trips to theElizabeth Tower and the workings of its famous bell,Big Ben. He was immensely proud of his clockcollection now being sold by Chorley's and some of the more unusual pieces being sold include:
• A fine 18th Century month-going regulatorclock by George Philip Strigel, formerclockmaker to Queen Charlotte; the face of theregulator is also inscribed 'Facing Her Majesties Palace London' . Estimate: £3,000-5,000 (Lot 794).
• A late 18th Century eight-day longcase clockby Park of Liverpool with unusual equation of time dial; as well as showing the phases of the
moon to the arch, it has a dial recording thetide times of both high and low water,
