In2003,PoEbecameastandardwiththeapprovalofIEEE802.3af,eliminatingtheneedtohaveseparateLANcablesfordataandelectricalcablesforpower.Class3PoEswitchescandeliverupto15.4wattsofpoweracrosseachport,providingconvergedpoweranddatatodevicessuchasVoIPphones,surveillancecameras,andwirelessaccesspoints.
While15.4wattsofpowerissufficientformanydevices,PoE+isanemergingstandard(802.3at)thatleveragesmodernCAT5ecablingtoprovide30wattsofpowerperport—enablinghigher-powerednext-generationcampusconvergenceapplicationssuchasvideoconferencingphonesandpan/tiltsurveillancecameras.802.3atPoE+isfullybackwardcompatiblewith802.3afPoE,andFastIronCXswitchesuseLLDPtonegotiateportsettingsdynamically.
