The Manitoba First Na ons Educa on Resource Centre (MFNERC) is proud to host its 18th annual Ligh ng the Fire, ‘A New Era: Cultural Renaissance in Indigenous Educa on’. The event will be held May 11-13, 2016 at the Victoria Inn Hotel and Conven on Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The conference and tradeshow will bring together Chiefs and councillors, school boards, educa on directors, principals, aspiring administrators, teachers, parents and all First Na ons educa on stakeholders. A New Era: Cultural Renaissance in Indigenous Educa on Indigenous educa on has remained resilient in this era of First Na ons reconcilia on, resul ng in approaches and methodologies that are both new and steeped in pre-colonial philosophies and customs. A renewed energy has emerged as the next genera on of Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators introduce trailblazing approaches in our schools and classrooms.

First Na ons have always prac ced advanced teaching approaches as survival depended on it, and now, in Canada’s twenty-first century, we are implemen ng these dynamic methods that are inclusive of community, school and na onhood.

Strengthening student iden ty is one of the keystones to a successful life, and we have begun to see this through programs that honour First Na ons culture, language and knowledge.The 2016 Ligh ng the Fire Conference includes workshops from educatorswith groundbreaking, prac cal approaches that use First Na ons cultureto ensure students thrive.
