It was a major celebration for the African slaves in
Jamaica.
People parade through the streets
dressed up in colorful outfits.
Historically this celebration was held when slave families were
together (normally for Christmas) and had the
opportunity to make fun of their European owners.
Traditionally men wear white masks.
Wild Indian, Devil, Belly-Woman, Pitchy-Patchy and Sailor are some of
the main characters.
This festival is celebrated at
Christmas time but also on
Emancipation Day or on Independence Day
