Two-eyes was in charge of looking after the goat, but she was hungry as she hadnt had much to eat. She sat down on a ridge and began to cry, so much so that two streams ran down from her eyes. When she looked up a wise woman was standing beside her who asked why she was crying.

Two-eyes said that she was sad as her family hated her for having two eyes like other people. “Today they have given me so little to eat that i am still very hungry.” The wise woman told Two-eyes not to cry and that she would tell her somthing so that she would never be hungry again.

Whenever you are hungry just say to your goat:

“Bleat my little goat, bleat; please cover the table with something to eat.”

And then a table filled with the most delicious food will appear before you, and you may eat as much as you like. When you have had enough just say: “Bleat, bleat my little goat I say, please

take this table right away.” And it will vanish from sight.

And after that, the Wise Woman disappeared! Two-eyes decided to see if this mysterious old woman was telling the truth, as she was very

hungry. Full of anticipation, Two-eyes repeated the magic words and then... Poof! An extravagant table appeared in front of her, and on it laid the most delicious food and drink she had ever seen! Two-eyes was amazed and helped herself to the food, but she was not greedy. When her hunger was satisfied, she again spoke the magic words that the wise woman had told her and the table vanished!

In the evening she went home with the goat an found a small dish with some food on it but she did not touch it. For the next few days she did the same and her sisters became suspicious and said: “There must be something wrong with Two-eyes,she has started leaving her food and she used to eat everything that was given to her.” They decided to send One-eye to follow Two-eyes when she took the goat to see if anyone gave her anything to eat.

She then asked the goat “ Bleat my little goat bleat, please cover this table with something to eat.” And sat down at the table and ate and drank untill she was full. She asked the goat to make the table disappear, woke up One-eye, and told her that she should not fall asleep whilst looking after the goat as it could have gotten away. They went home and again Two-eyes left her food. One-eye could not tell her mother why she wasnt eating as she had fallen asleep

When Two-eyes set out the next time. One-eye said she would go with her to the pasture to make sure that the goat was well taken care of and driven to where there is food. But Two-eyes had realised One-eyes plan and drove the goat into high grass. She said: ‘Come One-eye we will sit down and i will sing to you.” She sat down tired from the walk and began singing...“One-eye are you awake? One-eye are you sleeping?” Untill One-eye fell asleep.

The next day Mother sent Three-eyes along with Two-eyes to look after the goat together. Again Two-eyes knew of her sisters’ plan to spy on her, and she led both Three-

eyes and the goat up to high ground. “We will rest a while, and I will sing to you,” Two-eyes said kindly, and so they sat down and Two-eyes began to sing softly, “Three-eyes are you waking,Two-eyes are you sleeping.” However, Two-eyes made a terrible mistake: she only sang to two of the eyes, of which Three-eyes had three! As the third eye had not been named in the song, it did not sleep!

Because Three-eyes wanted to spy on Two-eyes, she slyly

closed her third eye to make her sister think that she was asleep. Then

Two-eyes spoke the magic words to the goat: “Bleat my little goat, bleat; please

cover the table with something to eat.” As before she ate and drank as much as her heart

desired, and then ordered to goat to make the table disappear. And Three-eyes had seen everything!

Two-eyes then woke up Three-eyes, and told her off for falling asleep whilst looking after the goat and suggested

that they should head for home.

Two-eyes again left her food but ths time Three-eyes told her mother everything. The mother was very angry and fetched a knife, which she then thrust into the heart of the goat, which fell down dead. When Two-eyes saw this she went out and seated herself on a ridge of grass on the hill and wept. Suddenly the wise woman once more stood by her side, and asked why she was crying. Two-eyes explained that her mother had killed the goat so she no longer had access to food and the wise woman said that Two-eyes should ask the sisters to give her the wise woman said that Two-eyes should ask the sisters to give her the heart of the goat ad bury it in the ground infront of the house. The sisters laughed and said; “if thats all you want you can have them.” Two-eyes took the heart and buried them quietly in the ground in front of the house.

Next morning when they all woke up and went outside, there stood a magnificent tree with leaves of silver and fruit of gold hanging among them. In all the wide world there was nothing so beautiful or precious. They did not know how the tree could of come there during the night, but Two-eyes saw that it had grown up out of the entrails of the goat, for it was standing on the exact spot where she buried them.

Mother demanded thatOne-eye climb up and gather some fruit from the tree for

them. But just as she was about to get hold of one of the golden apples, the branch

flew from her hands! And this happened everytime so that she could not pluck even a single apple. Then Mother told Three-eyes to climb up the tree to try where her sister had failed, but she too was unable to pick any of the beautiful fruit. As Mother grew

more and more impatient, she climbed up herself. But try as she might, even she could not get hold of the tree’s

glorious harvest.

Two-eyes suggested that she should have a go, the sisters laughed for they did not believe that a common person would be able to fetch the fruit. Two-eyes climbed up and the golden apples came into her hand of their own accord, so that she could pluck them one after the other and brought down a whole apronful with her. The mother took them away from her, and instead of treating poor Two-eyes any better for this, she and the two sisters were only envious, because Two-eyes alone had been able to get the fruit, and they treated her still more cruelly.able to get the fruit, and they treated her still more cruelly.

One day when they were al standing by the tree a young Prince approached. “Quick Two-eyes.” cried the two sisters “climb under this and don’t come out.” The Prince came nearer to admire the tree. He asked who owned the tree, and said that if the owner of the tree would give him a single branch they may ask for whatever they wish in return. The sisters told him that it belonged to them and said that they would give him a branch. The both took great trouble , but they were not able to break off a branch. She climbed up and with the greatest ease broke off a branch and gave it to the Prince. “Two-eyes what shall I give you in return?” “Two eyes answered; ” Ive suffered from hunger, thirst, grief and want from early morning till laste at night. If you would take me with you and deliver me these things I should be happy.“

When the Prince saw the apples he was astonished, and asked where they had come from. The sisters told him that they had another sister who was not allowed to show herself for she only had two eyes like other people. The Prince however desired to see her and called for her to come forward. Two-eyes came out from beneath the barrel and the Prince was surpised by her great beauty. He said she would definatley be able to break off a branch for him. “Yes replied Two-eyes, be able to break off a branch for him. “Yes replied Two-eyes, that i shall certainly be able to do as the tree bleongs to me.”

The Prince lifted Two-eyes onto his horse and took her home to his castle, and there he gave her beautiful clothes and food and drink to her hearts content. They were soon married and the wedding was celebrated with great rejoicing. Two-eyes lived a long and happy life. Many years later, two poor womn came to the castle begging for help. She looked at them and realised that they were her sisters. She took them in, made them welcome and took care of them. The two sisters felt terrible for being so cruel to Two-eyes when they were younger.
