Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace Our Lord is with thee Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death
Amen.
A Beautiful Blessing
Motherhood is a beautiful blessing and it certainly has its challenges. Whether a woman is a mother of one or seven, an adoptive mother, a foster mother, a single mother, a godmother, an aspiring mother, or a spiritual mother, she is not alone in her journey. Mary is the perfect role model for mothers, no matter where life's circumstances direct. Mary is a refuge and advocate, she teaches about faith and being open to God’s divine plan.
Mary demonstrated her courage and faith in God when she opened herself to God’s will. Hers was an unconventional pregnancy that had severe consequences in her life, and yet she accepted it with an open heart. To become a mother, Mary had to give up everything she had known and had to enter into a new world. Mary could have very easily refused God’s request to be the mother of Christ, but she took it on. There is a natural worry that comes with the huge responsibility that is motherhood. There is a fear of the unknown, a doubt to be ‘ready’. Accepting God’s will when it is not in the plan is very difficult. Like Mary, we all must remember that God has a plan and we need to trust in that plan and in Him.
We can all think of times that mothers make sacrifices for their children. Maybe a weekend coffee session to take the children to sport. Or taking on a new job to pay for school fees, uniforms or the mortgage. We all have our hopes and dreams for our children, siblings, nieces, nephews, godchildren and grandchildren. It is certainly necessary for us to be supportive and loving yet set limits for our children. There are also times when we have to allow them the opportunity to grow into their own person and establish their own relationships. Mary highlights how hard motherhood can be. There comes a point the children need to think for themselves and make their own decisions. We can assume that Mary had at least a small personal desire to have her son just be a normal carpenter and not have to suffer and give up his life for us. However, she had the courage to put him and others before her own desires. When his time came, she moved out of the way and let Jesus go to work in his public ministry. Mary teaches us to be loving and compassionate, but also gives us an example of how to detach out of love. Similarly, each mother must strike a balance between protecting their child from the world, and encouraging them to find a place where they can use their gifts to enrich it.
Mary really highlights how hard motherhood can be. She saw her own son put to death. As a mother, Mary had to watch her own son go through horrific pain, unable to help him. The most difficult yet essential lesson that Mary teaches us is her willingness to accept suffering and still remain faithful. Even trusting that Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan, it must have been so difficult. In this time of confusion and grief, she relied on her family and friends –– Joseph, Mary Magdalene and the disciples. When we suffer such immense pain in our lives, we may be tempted to isolate ourselves, but we must remember to turn to our loved ones and let them help us deal with our pain.
In this month of May, let us reflect on the life of Mary and her significant role in being the Mother of Jesus. Let us think of our own mothers and the part that they have played in our lives, particularly around Mother's’ Day. May we thank God for our mothers, and if they are still with us, perhaps we can also thank them for the part they have played in our own lives.
Regards Brian

Another helpful article regarding positive parenting from Michael Grose Parenting Ideas.
Wellbeing tips for primary school kids By Dr Jodi Richardson
It’s time for parents to have a clear understanding of
wellbeing and how we can support our kids to cultivate
their own.
Wellbeing – it’s a word we hear a lot these days. We
understand that it’s important for our kids; but it’s not
always clear exactly what it is, how we know if they’ve got it, and how we can help them to get more!
Put simply, our kids’ wellbeing is a combination of their physical, mental, emotional and social health. And
because a range of different elements contribute to their wellbeing, there are a bunch of activities we can
do with them, role model for them and teach them, to improve it.
Developing wellbeing is more than ensuring the absence of ill-health, it’s about taking action to adopt
thinking and behaviour patterns that researchers have shown to foster flourishing physical and mental
health.
Here are 5 practices that you can put into action to enhance your kids’ wellbeing:
1. Get them outside and moving
There’s so much we can do! Park further from school at drop off and pick up and increase their
daily exercise at the same time; stay a while after school to let the kids play; stop at the park on the
way home or head outside after bags are unpacked and have a bounce on the trampoline.
2. Create plenty of opportunities for your kids to foster positive connections with their friends,
family and of course with you!
Positive social relationships not only enhance kids’ wellbeing, but are key to their future wellbeing
as adults as well. Time spent with friends helps our kids to develop social skills including sharing,
compromise, listening and conflict resolution.
3. Keep screen time to a minimum
Kids love screens, but we’re the parents and we can work with our kids to create clear and
consistent limits. Kids aged 2-5 are recommended to have one hour of screen time per day and two
hours a day max for 5-12-year-olds.
4. Help your kids develop mindfulness skills
Mindfulness is about paying attention in the present moment, letting thoughts come and go
without getting caught up in them. Sounds easy, but like any skill it takes time and practice. It gives
kids’ overstimulated minds a rest! I highly recommend the Smiling Mind app for age appropriate
mindfulness meditations.
5. Last but not least – ensure your kids get ample sleep
Primary school kids need 10-12 hours per day. Often, what helps enormously is establishing clear and consistent routines including no screen time one hour before bed, a ‘wind-down’ routine which may include a bath/shower, being read a book and then quiet reading before lights out. Dear Parents and Carers,
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually since 1978. Your child is invited to enter this internationally recognised competition. One of the largest annual events on the Australian education calendar, the AMC was the first competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 30 countries participate each year.
The competition aims to be accessible to all students from Years 3 to 12, not just the mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student.
Once again we are registering the school for this competition. For further information go to the Australian Mathematics Trust website: http://www.amt.edu.au/mathematics/amc/ . All students in Years 3-6 are welcome to enter. The competition is scheduled for Thursday 27th July. Students will be supervised at school when they participate in the competition.
As well as the $6.50 entry cost, AMT has an optional online preparatory course for the competition called GetSetAMC. This problem-solving course has an additional cost of $2 for individual students if enrolled through the school. Once enrolled, students will be allocated an Access Code which can be used to access GetSetAMC. Details of this course are available on the AMT website: https://amt.edfinity.com/products/586a626f37f8130004170a09
To enter students in Australian Mathematics Competition complete this form and return to school with CORRECT money by Friday 5th May.

Hi there, Sacred Heart families!
I’m Caitlin, the coordinator of your Out of School Hours Care program, and I’m reporting from the OSHC
Area to let you know a bit about what we have been up to in Before and After School Care!
Firstly, I am so thrilled to announce our brand new 2017 OSHC Leaders! Drumroll please…
… Alessandra, Liana and Annie are our new outstanding OSHC Captains!!! Polly and Ryan are our
exceptional Environment Leaders, Rohaan and Sebastian are our super skilled Sports Leaders and Ava
and Ruby are our creative, cool Arts/Craft/Cooking Leaders! We are so excited to be able to provide all
of these children with opportunities to practice their leadership skills at OSHC, and have special
leadership responsibilities here.
We have spent the past couple of weeks doing all kinds of amazing activities – we created a brand new
2017 hand print banner for the OSHC Room, complete with over 50 handprints, and even handprints
from parents and siblings of children who attend! While we completed our hand print banner, we
focussed on growth mindsets, and how we can change our thinking from negative (“I can’t do this…”,
“I’m terrible at this….”) to positive (“Mistakes are lessons…”, “I can always try again…”). We have been
so pleased to see so many children rethink the way they view situations, and watch everyone giving
things a go – even if they don’t succeed the first time they try something!
We LOVE science at OSHC, and have been experimenting with all things science – slime, putty,
explosive soda, colour changing milk and even layered liquid rainbow jars – wooowwwwwwww! We
have also been planting new plants (strawberries, sunflowers, mint, basil and parsley) for a small OSHC
Garden, and in the meantime, learning about being environmentally friendly, and kind to our planet.
We have made an OSHC vow to save more paper, water, electricity and food – we will keep you posted
on how we go!
Please don’t forget to book if you are wanting to use the OSHC service – this can be done through the
Parent Portal (www.campaustralia.com.au) OR for last minute bookings, please call me on 0401 188
896.
Remember, if your child has medical needs (e.g. allergies, asthma, anaphylaxis), you will need to supply
us with their Action Plan, medication and any other relevant documents BEFORE they attend OSHC!
We prioritise your child’s safety and wellbeing over everything else.
Thanks so much to everyone for reading, and we hope to see you around in the OSHC Area sometime
soon!
Caitlin and the Camp Australia Team
