It is definitely wintertime. There is
no denying it. When you go
outside, it is extremely cold, and
most days we see a snowflake or
two. During this time of year, I
have a chill until around the
middle of April. Yet there are some things that come
into our lives that at least warm our hearts during this
time of year.
The other day I had the privilege of being able to go to
the youth outing at Wildwood Highlands for snow
tubing. We had 16 kids come to participate. The great
thing about it was that many of the kids that came
were friends of some of the youth of our congregation.
It warmed my heart to see how these kids not only
wanted to be at a church sponsored event, but that
they wanted to share this experience with others.
At the start of the New Year we had a new program
begin for our Senior High youth. It is called N.O.W.,
and it stands for No Ordinary Worship. The group
meets on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. and gives our
youth time to talk about their lives, have some fun, do
some homework, and think about their faith. It warms
my heart to know that we have many adults, for all
our different ages of youth, who are willing to take the
time to make church a welcoming place for our kids.
At the end of January we had a unique event for our
congregation where we were able to learn about how
another culture celebrates the New Year. One family in
our congregation has celebrated the Chinese New Year
in the past and offered to teach our youth and
members about their tradition. It warms my heart that
we have a church where we can celebrate the
wonderful diversity that we bring to the Body of Christ.
I could go on and on about all the things that warm
my heart during this time of year and throughout the
year when it comes to being the church together with
all of you. I thank you for your continued faithfulness
and all the ways that you enrich the ministry of St.
John’s!
Soli Deo Gloria! (To God alone be the glory!)

Greetings from St. John's Literacy Mission to the World
Dr. Bill & Linda Kofmehl, Chris & Jennie Ebner, 412-364-3777 and a host of volunteers! www.christianliteracy.com
anwww.literacyempowers.com
A review of thirty-five years of service: Christian Literacy Associates and its model
program, Allegheny Co. Literacy Council, Inc. were founded in 1975 to test The Chris-
tian Literacy Series, a unique Bible-content basic reading program. Since then, more
that 5800 volunteer tutors have been trained locally to work with children and adults
who cannot read God’s Holy Word. Tutors have been trained to work in more than 60
areas around the US, through training for groups like the Salvation Army, Joni and
Friends International Disabilities Ministry, and the ELCA Headquarters in Chicago.
Basic reading primers were developed by CLA consultants in twenty different lan-
guages in third world countries for mission groups, national churches, and organiza-
tions like World Vision. Twenty-five thousand tutors were trained in Haiti to use the
Creole Primer and ten thousand students were taught to read (mostly women) in one
year in Malawi, Africa with the Chichewa Primer.
Today, in 2011, much of our effort is directed at ―Illiteracy Prevention‖ – training
volunteers and parents to help ―at-risk‖ elementary students improve their reading
skills so that they will not become the ―Illiterate adults of tomorrow‖. This is
accomplished by helping churches hold ―Summer Reading Camps‖ and after school
tutoring programs, and training parents and family members to work one-on-one
with their students. A new concept is being tested through the Oakland
Academy of Reading, where the professional services of a reading specialist are made
available at an affordable rate to inner-city families, with testing & training of parents.
Please keep this ministry in mind if any of your young children or grandchildren are
having trouble with basic reading skills (zero to 6th grade level). Call Dr. Bill at
412-364-377. Free training for parents is always available at our office.
The RECYCLING FOR READING PROGRAM continues to aid Christian
Literacy. Our thanks to those of you who are providing those ink jet cartridges, toner
cartridges, and used cell phones (drop them off at the church office, please). Is your child having problems with basic reading skills? Christian Literacy staff members will be
happy to discuss the situation with you. Call 412-364-3777 As always, training of tutors is free.

MEMORIAL GARDEN The work on the Memorial Garden in the Cemetery is
nearing completion. With the addition of landscaping by
Ron Seidel, the Garden is taking shape. By the time this
Newsletter goes to press, we will have received the Cross and
Cenotaph base, which are the last of the granite pieces to be
received. The benches and Cenotaph plaque are on hand. These items will be
installed when the weather permits. We have orders for 21 more memorial
bricks for the walk and more can be ordered now. We will execute the order
when the weather gets better so we can add these bricks. Donors are still needed
for some of the Pastors’ bricks already in place. The only items remaining to be
purchased are the brass inserts with the internment niches for the Cremorial II.
To be able to do this, we need to complete the pre-death sale of the individual
niches. We have seen much interest in cremation, and now is the time to
consider burial or cremation and make the necessary plans for whichever your
family chooses. We now offer three alternatives for internment: burial in a plot
in the Cemetery, cremation with the ashes placed in an individual niche in the
Cremorial II, or cremation and the ashes scattered in a common vault known as
an Ossuary. Those remains placed in the Ossuary will have their names
engraved on the Cenotaph Plaque. Additional stewardship opportunities exist
for donations for all or part of the cost of the Cross, Cenotaph plaque, and two
of the benches. The cost of the cross is $3000, the Cenotaph Plaque and base is
$5000, and each bench is $500. If desired, there is the option of a memorial
plaque to recognize the donor and/or memorialize a loved one. Contact a
member of the Cemetery Committee regarding any matter relating to the
garden. The members are: Sam Baling, Chairperson, Walt Treser, Nancy
Swanhart, Mary Lynne Martin, Jim Maxwell and Ellen Fowkes.

The Priscilla Guild is hoping to expand our member
base. We are a group of women who assist the ministers by setting up for and cleaning up after our worship services.
We also are responsible for decorating the church during holidays. We meet once a month to touch base on what is
happening with respect to the worship schedule. Meetings are not mandatory for members.
The time commitment is fairly minimal as we work in teams to spread out the work. Obviously we spend a bit more time doing
things around the holidays than we do during the summer months. Our members help as much as they feel they can. We often have lunch together & enjoy each other's company.
If you have any questions or are interested in joining our group, please contact Ruth Mansfield (412-364-3855)

Stewardship Stew
We think of the Autumn months of the year as the stewardship season of the church…a time when the Church Council and Finance Committee work to plan the mission and ministry for the coming year and we, the St. John’s family, affirm our giving intentions to support that mission. Throughout 2010 you saw an item called “Stewardship Sense” in our Sunday bulletin. It served as a reminder that God wants us to be good stewards of our time, our talent and our treasure. We can carry out more ministry together than we ever could as individuals. As we share our gifts, we are part of a mission and ministry that touches lives locally and around the world. Both children and adults are nurtured here and as we grow in faith, we come to understand that all we have comes from God. In thanksgiving for God’s gifts to us, we need to “pay it forward”. One very creative and t houghtful way we can do that is to remember St. John’s in our Will. We are surrounded with evidence of the good stewardship of those who have gone before us. It’s now our privilege to be a good example for those who follow us. Love and support St. John’s with all your heart and fill it with family, friends and neighbors. God’s work – our hands, what a wonderful partnership.
Thanks be to God…always!
Stephen Ministers Are Ready to Care
Our Stephen ministers are: People who will “be there” when someone has a need; Caring
Christian friends who listen, care, pray, support and encourage; Lay persons who have been carefully selected and who have received
special training in providing emotional and spiritual care; Children of God who walk beside a person who is hurting.
St. John’s has a number of trained Stephen ministers available to provided one-to-one confidential care to people who are experiencing any of life’s difficulties. Our Stephen ministers are: Dawn Andersson, Dianne Barbin, Carol Celin, Nancy Danklefsen, Betsy Fackler, Kristin Falkner, Lee Fischer, Shirley McIlvried, Jan McQuaid, Dave Richards,
Joyce Speckhals, and Jan Treser. Please talk to Pastor Diehm or Pastor Smail if you would like to know more about receiving care from a
Stephen minister. Also, every Sunday morning, from 9:15 to 10:15, one of our Stephen ministers will be available in the church balcony to listen, pray, and
lend support for the coming week. If you are hurting, worried, stressed, or just in need of a special prayer you are welcome to take advantage
of this one-to-one confidential ministry.
