Victorian Queen This splendid Italianate villa, on Capitol Hill’s most
prestigious boulevard, features “all of the best defining
features of the style,” says Judith Capen celebrated architectural historian and journalist. There’s “a robust articulated cornice, and one-story
canted bay with its own beautifully scaled down cornice, a terrific bracketed
console at the door, and wonderfully articulated brick eyebrows at the
classic two-over-two segmentally-arched windows. Lovely.”

Living & Dining
The living room’s deep bay window
lets sunshine dazzle the honeyed patina
of magnificent heart pine floors, a
mellow glow that can only be achieved
with a century’s loving use and polish.
Overhead, an ornate, foliated plaster
ceiling medallion adds splendor on
splendor to a crystal chandelier —
soaring the eye upward to eleven foot ceilings
trimmed with elegantly deep crown moldings.
A chestnut and marble mantle surrounds the
wood-burning fireplace, the room’s natural focal
point and one of three working fireplaces in the
home.
Nine foot pocket doors divide the living room from
the gracious dining room, where a second period
mantel is flanked by handsome windows with six
and a half inch trim. In one corner of the room, a
near floor-to-ceiling china closet provides secure
storage for your silver and crystal.
Off the dining room is a beautifully appointed
powder room with a vessel sink and ornate mirror.
Massive pocket doors with splendid brass hardware provides an elegant segue from living room to dining.
