• When you are working from home there is always the possibility of being distracted or not disciplined enough to keep to schedules and time lines. If this becomes a habit it could reflect badly on yourself, your business and definitely the revenue earned.
• Here are some time management tips to ensure that you stay focused on the time lines and good time management skills provided for and expected:
Time Management Is Essential
• Carry a schedule and record all your thoughts, conversations and activities for a whole week.
• You will then know how much you can do can within a day of work and where your precious time is going.
• You'll see how much time is actually spent producing results and how much time is wasted on unproductive actions.
Tip #1: Carry a Schedule
• Assign a time to any activity or conversation that contributes to your success.
• Beware of to-do lists that get longer and longer to the point of being unworkable.
• Use an appointment books. Schedule appointments with yourself and create time blocks for high-priority thoughts, conversations, and actions.
• Schedule when they will begin and end.
• Have the discipline to keep these appointments.
Tip #2: Assign a Time to Everything
• Plan to allow at least 50 percent of your time to the thoughts, activities and conversations that produce most of your results.
• Schedule time for interruptions. Plan time to be pulled away from what you're doing.
• Take the first 30 minutes of every day to plan your day. Don't start working until you complete your planning.
Tip #3: Focus On Productive Activities
• Take five minutes before every call and task to decide what result you want to attain.
• This will help you know what success looks like before you start. And it will also slow time down.
• Take five minutes after each call and activity to determine whether your desired result was achieved.
• If not, what was missing? How do you put what's missing in your next call or activity?
Tip #4: Monitor Your Calls
• Schedule time for interruptions.
• If interruptions consistently steal your time and energy, or if they frequently disrupt your schedule, it's time to keep an Interrupters Log.
• This is a simple record of the interruptions you experience in the course of a day.
• Once you have recorded the interruptions for a week or two, sit down and analyze the information. Which interruptions are productive and which are not?
• Find a way to block unproductive interruptions in the future.
Tip #5: Manage Interruptions
• Practice not answering the phone just because it's ringing and e-mails just because they show up.
• Disconnect instant messaging.
• Don't instantly give people your attention unless it's absolutely crucial in your business to offer an immediate human response.
• Instead, schedule a time to answer email and return phone calls.
Tip #6: Manage Incoming Phone Calls and Emails
• Block out other distractions like Facebook and other forms of social media unless you use these tools to generate business.
Tip #7: Block Out Distractions
• Remember that it's absolutely impossible to get everything done.
• Also remember that 20 percent of your thoughts, conversations and activities will usually produce 80 percent of your results.
