7 steps to getting your UK student visa

Tier 4 (students) UK visa application guide

All it takes is seven easy steps and 40 points to getting your UK student visa under the new Points-based system.

Follow this step-by-step instruction guide to guide you through the process.

1. You must ensure that you have obtained a visa letter from your UK institution.

o Your institution must be a licensed institution listed on the UK Border Agency (UKBA) Register of Education Sponsors at: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/employersandsponsors/pointsbasedsystem/registerofsponsorseducation

o A list of all required details by UKBA is available from

www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/adult-students/documents-and-proof/visa-letter/ *30 points will be awarded to you if the following details are in order.

2. You should possess an individual or joint account in your name stating the following:

o Full fee for the first year, as stated in the visa letter. If you have paid part of the fees, please show an original receipt as evidence.

o Maintenance fee of £5,400 per annum (outside London) or £7,200 per annum (in London) *These amounts must be available in cash. Fixed deposits are also acceptable. Bonds, stocks or pension fund accounts are not acceptable

o For students with dependents, additional funds proving that the student is able to support them is

required: *Sum of £533 per month for each dependent if student is living in London and £400 per month for each dependent living outside of London

*10 points will be awarded to you if you fulfil the Maintenance funds requirement.

3. Students must ensure all required documents are in order. Amongst the supporting documents, on top of the offer letter and financial statements that need to be submitted are: o Current and previous passports o A photocopy of the bio data page of the current passport o A recent passport-sized photograph with a white background. o Original education certificates used to apply to the UK institution o Marriage and birth certificates (for dependent visa applications only) o Written consent from parent/guardian (if applicant is under 18 years of age) o One set of photocopy for all documents submitted o Two sets of detailed itemized list for all documents submitted

4. Log on to www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk to fill up the online application form. Once form is completed and submitted, please print a copy of the form. If you wish to reprint the form, it will be available in the system for up to 3 months after the date of submission. Other forms that need to be completed are:

o The student survey form o Student self-assessment form

5. Make an appointment at www.vfs-uk-my.com to lodge your application and to have your biometrics data taken.

o You can check the latest visa fees at www.vfs-uk-my.com/visafees.aspx. Fees fluctuate according to

exchange rates, so make sure you have the latest and correct fees.

6. Bring your application form, original pieces of documentary evidences and visa fee(s) on the appointment day to:

o Go early! It will save you a lot of time o Seating in the centre is limited to applicants only o Children under 5 years of age need not have their biometric data taken, so, students do not need to

bring them along o Keep your originals and/or large documents in a postal tube or cardboard-backed envelope to

ensure that they are not bent in transit

7. After submitting your application, a receipt stating your application number would be given to you. You

may track your application status from www.vfs-uk-my.com. Processing times may take 5 to 15 working days.

When your passport is ready for collection, you may return to the Visa Application Centre to collect your passport. *Please take note that passport collection hours are from 1000hrs to 1500hrs.
