    2.1 Control Electronics

The drive is electronically controlled by a microprocessor, several logicmodules, digital/analogue modules, and variousdrivers and receivers. Thecontrol electronicsperform thefollowing major functions:

Conducts a power-upsequence and calibrates the servo.Monitors various timers forheadsettling, servo failure, etc.Analyzes servosignals toprovide closed loopcontrol. Theseincludeposition errorsignal andestimatedvelocity.Controls thevoice coil motor driver to align theactuator onto adesiredposition.Monitors the actuatorposition anddetermines the target track for aseekoperation.Constantly monitorserror conditions of theservo and takes correspondingaction if an error occurs.Controlsstarting, stopping, and rotatingspeed of the spindle.Controls andinterprets allinterface signalsbetween thehost controller and thedrive.Controlsread writeaccessing of the diskmedia, includingdefectmanagement anderror recovery.Performsself-checkout (diagnostics).

    2.2 Head Disk Assembly

The headdisk assembly(HDA) is assembled in a cleanroom environment and contains adisk andactuatorassembly. Air is constantlycirculated and filteredwhen thedrive is operational. Venting of the HDA isaccomplished via a breatherfilter.

The spindle is driven directly by a brushless, sensorless DCdrive motor. Dynamicbraking is used tostop thespindle quickly.

    2.3 Actuator

The read/write heads aremounted in theactuator. The actuator is aswing-arm assembly driven by avoicecoil motor. A closed-loop positioning servocontrols themovement of the actuator. Anembeddedservopatternsupplies feedback to thepositioning servo to keep the read/write heads centered over thedesiredtrack.

The actuatorassembly is balanced to allowvertical or horizontalmounting without adjustment.

When thedrive is poweredoff, the actuator automatically moves the head to adedicated landingzoneoutside of the dataarea, where theactuator islocked.

  • 3.4.1 Command overhead

    Commandoverhead isdefined as thetime required:

    3.4.2 Mechanical Positioning

3.4.2.1 Average Seek Time (Including Settling)

    “Typical” and “Max” are given throughout theperformancespecification by;

Typical Average of the drivepopulationtested atnominal environmental andvoltageconditions.Max Maximum valuemeasured on any onedrive over thefull range of theenvironmental and

voltageconditions. (See 6.4,“Environment” onpage 36 and 6.5, “DCPowerRequirements” onpage 37 for ranges.)

The seektime is measured from the start ofactuator'smotion to thestart ofa reliable read or write opera-tion. Reliable read or write impliesthat error correction/recovery is not used to correctarrival problems. The average seektime is measured as theweighted average of allpossibleseekcombinations.

  • 3.4.3 Drive Ready Time

Ready The condition in which thedrive is able toperform a mediaaccesscommand(eg. read, write)immediately.

Power On This includes the time required for the internalself diagnostics.

    3.4.4 Data Transfer Speed

    Instantaneousdisk-buffer transferrate (Mbyte/sec) isderived by:(Number ofsectors on a track)*512*(revolution/sec)

Note: Number ofsectors per trackwill vary because of the linear density recording.

Sustaineddisk-buffer transferrate (Mbyte/sec) isdefined by consideringhead/cylinder change time. Thisgives alocal average data transferrate. It is derived by:

    (Sustained TransferRate) = A/ ( B + C + D )

    A = (Number ofdatasectors per cylinder) * 512B = ((# of Surface per cylinder) - 1) *(Headswitch time)C = (Cylinder change time)D = (# of Surface) *(One revolution time)

InstantaneousBuffer-Host TransferRate(Mbyte/sec)defines themaximum datatransfer rate onSCSIBus. It also depends on the speed of thehost.

The measurementmethod isgiven in 3.4.6, “Throughput” onpage 15.

  • 4.0 Data integrity

The driveretains recordedinformation under all non-write operations. No more than onesector can be lost bypower downduring writeoperationwhile write cache is disabled. If power downoccurs beforecompletion of datatransferfrom write cache to disk while write cache isenabled, the dataremaining in write cachewill be lost. To prevent this dataloss atpower off, the followingaction is recommended:

To confirm successfulcompletion ofSYNCHRONIZE CACHE(35h) command.

    4.1 Equipment Status

Equipmentstatus isavailable to thehost system any time thedrive is not ready toread, write, orseek. Thisstatus normallyexists atpower-on time andwill be maintained until thefollowing conditions aresatisfied.

Accessrecalibration/tuning is complete.Spindle speed meets requirements forreliableoperations.Self-check of drive iscomplete.

Appropriateerror status is madeavailable to thehost system if any of the followingcondition occursafterthe drive hasbecomeready:

Spindle speedgoesoutside of requirements forreliableoperation.“Write fault” is detected.

    4.2 Error Recovery

Errors occurring with thedrive arehandled by the errorrecoveryprocedure.

Errors that areuncorrectableafter application of the errorrecoveryprocedures are reported to thehostsystem as non-recoverable errors.

Note : The drive may not spin up while SCSI Bus isdisconnected and internal terminator is disabled.

Internal terminatorenabled byjumper plug is equipped in thedrive except 80-pin (SCA-2)model.

The 80-pin (SCA-2)model does nothave internalterminator.

    6.1.4 Hot Plug / Unplug

Powersupply and SCSI bus hot plug and unplug isallowed. There is nospecialsequence required forcon-necting 5 or 12 volts.During a hotplug-in event thedrive being pluggedwill draw alargeamount ofcurrentat the instant ofplug-in. This currentspike is due to charging the bypass capacitors on thedrive. Thiscurrent pulse maycause thepower supply to go out ofregulation. If this supply is shared byother drivesthen a lowvoltagepower onreset may be initiated onthosedrives. Therefore the recommendation for hotplugging is tohave one supply for eachdrive. Never daisychain the powerleads if hot plugging isplanned.Hot pluggingshould be minimized to preventwear on thepower connector.

Hot plugging of theSCSI bus maycauseglitches on thebus. To minimize the chance ofglitching, it isrecommended to plug in the SCSI busbefore thepower isapplied.

During hot plugging, the suppliesmust not goover theuppervoltage limit. In addition, proper ESD pro-tection must beapplied during thepluggingevent to insurethat the SCSI bus ground is at thesamepoten-tial as the driveground.

If operating shocklimit can be exceeded at hotun-plugging, spindlemotor should be stoppedusingSCSIStop Unit commandprior to the hot un-plugging.
