HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2
Merry Christmas to all!!
May Jesus, our Savior, increase in each of us the capacity to love more deeply.
Let us live with renewed appreciation.
From your Parish Grouping Staff
3 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING
Some Children See Him
Some children see Him lily white, The baby Jesus born this night. Some children see Him lily white, With dresses soft and fair.
Some children see Him bronzed and brown, The Lord of heav’n to earth come down. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, With dark and heavy hair.
Some children see Him almond-eyed, This Savior whom we kneel beside. Some children see Him almond-eyed, With skin of yellow hue.
Some children see Him dark as they, Sweet Mary’s Son to whom we pray. Some children see him dark as they, And, ah! they love Him, too!
The children in each different place Will see the baby Jesus’ face Like theirs, but bright with heavenly grace, And filled with holy light.
O lay aside each earthly thing And with thy heart as offering, Come worship now the infant King. ‘Tis love that’s born tonight!

YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO THE PARISH A special Message from Father Joe
This Christmas, I am appealing to your extra kindness and generosity to our parishes. Everyone prepares a special gift to the parish where we are members and where we are served regularly. This year I am asking all of our parishioners to consider making an extra special contribution to our parish. We have been through some very difficult times together. I hope you are seeing some stability return to our Parish Family in both parishes. I hope you have noticed the ways our clergy team is working hard to assure you of our love and pastoral con-cern. Because of your generosity already, I have been able to hire some of the finest pastoral staff members in the entire diocese. They joined us because they believe in the potential of our urban parish and what we can do together for the Kingdom of God in our midst. There is so much more we can do! But we need you, your deep and sincere spirituality, your prayers, your witness to Christ among us, your ideas and leadership, your volun-teerism and right now your financial support. Please pray and discern what is the most you and your family can afford to donate in the Christmas Mass collection. I know you will give in accordance to your love. Thank you for considering this very important and necessary appeal to your extra generosity this year. May God bless you for whatever extra help you can give. If you are not able to increase your donation this year for some reason, please know I understand. Your prayers for us are the most important gift you can give. Thank you.

CHRISTMAS WAFER TRADITION IN YOUR HOME You do not have to be Slovak, Polish or Lithuanian to observe the beautiful tradition of the Christmas Wafers (Oplatki) at your family table on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The spiritual lesson in this age-old custom is about unity and peace in the family. Again this weekend, packets of the three white and one pink bread wafers are available in the vestibule of Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael Parishes until supplies run out. There is no charge for the packet (but a free will offering will be accepted to cover the parish costs if you want to donate.) What is more important however is that your family consider joining the growing number of families in our country discovering this meaningful tradition. Complete directions on how to conduct the brief Oplatki service can be found on the back of the packets. Please consider taking a packet home for Christmas while they last. And let us know what your family thought about celebrating this ceremony at the table.

Ready to Live in the Power & Love of God? The Holy Spirit moved the apostles from fear to love — from hiding from the world to going out to all the nations as missionaries and martyrs. Come and invite the Holy Spirit move you in the same way! Youth Ministry Update Do you feel a call to help develop a vibrant youth ministry program in the East End of Pitts-burgh? We are looking for parishioners to form a joint study group with our close neighbors, the Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh (St. Bede, St. James and St. Charles Lwanga) Please contact Fr. Mele at [email protected] to serve on this exciting new committee. The first meeting will be held at 6:00PM on January 15, 2020 at St. Raphael Church.
On October 13, 2019, at our Young Family Meeting, participants expressed a great interest in an effort to im-plement the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). In an effort to do that, a small group of about six members (staff and parishioners) will begin to meet monthly from January through June to discern a plan to establish CGS in our grouping. On January 19, 2020 (snow day, January 26), an information session will be scheduled for all parishioners to hear about CGS and answer any questions that you may have. Kathy Klocek, a parishioner and a catechist trained in all 3 levels of the Catechesis will speak. She will also facilitate the planning meetings. Here is the timeline: February 2020 - The first meeting will work to have members get to know each other and to begin the work of discerning how God would like CGS implemented. March - April 2020 - The next two meetings will study the book the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in a Parish Setting by Tina Lillig. May - June 2020 - The last meetings will be to draft a plan of implementation which will be proposed to the Pastoral Council and Finance Council for their consultation and recommendations to Fr. Mele.
With Grateful Hearts The Sacred Heart sanctuary main altar is love-ly as always but especially at Christmas. This year the altar cloth has been designed and hand sewn by eighth grader Caroline McLaughlin, the daughter of Brendan and Susie McLaughlin
and the granddaughter of Mary Lou and the late Aloysius (Ish) McLaughlin. This special gift will become one of the annual Christmas traditions when we become a new par-ish. Caroline will be confirmed in the Faith this coming spring. God bless you, Caroline, for such a beautiful gift. May the Holy Child Jesus bless you and your family.

Join in praying the St. Andrew Christmas Novena each day until Christmas Hail, and blessed be the hour and moment at which the Son of God was born of a most pure Virgin at a stable at midnight in Bethlehem in the piercing cold. At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, to hear my prayers and grant my desires. (Mention your intentions here) Through Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother. Amen.

ADORATION AT SAINT RAPHAEL
Please note that there is not going to be Adoration on Wednes-days December 25 and January 1st.
ADORATION AT SACRED HEART First Friday of the Month
8:45AM to 11:45AM First Sunday of the Month
6:30PM to 7:30PM Individual Family Blessing
There is no place like home for the holidays. We anticipate many adult children and their families returning home for Christmas. While the family is here, we hope they all worship with us. December 28 and 29 is Holy Family Sunday. During the recessional hymn, priests and deacons will remain at the communion stations. Your family will be invited to come for-ward and receive a special blessing before you all go home. Family members are welcome to take a pic-ture with the priest or deacon if you wish.
Advent Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Our Grouping has begun the practice of anointing the sick and those advanced in age on a regular basis. Please join us for this simple but efficacious grace after all Masses on December 21 and 22. The ceremony only takes a few minutes.
SPIRITUAL RENEWAL IN THE NEW YEAR
Please mark your 2020 calendar and plan to attend two programs intended to continue our parish’s healing in the wake of several storms which have shaken our faith community recently.
On Thursday evenings, February 6 and 13, Eileen Colianni, counselor, retreat facilitator, and speaker on psy-chological/ spiritual topics, will present: “After the Storms: Healing, Forgiveness...Hope”.
Eileen returns during Lent to conduct a three-session series: “Putting on Christ: His mind, His heart, His likeness” on Thursdays March 5, 12, 19. Here’s an opportunity for Lenten spiritual nourishment beyond giving up chocolate!
We’ve designed these programs with your well-being in mind. They are opportunities to re-fresh your weary spirits, as well as to restore the warmth and vibrancy of our parish family.
Plan to be there so that we can make our name – bestpghparish – a reality!
