Dear Parents and Students
In the words of Robert Collier
In a school pursuing excellence, right rela onships, wellness of all beings, all things and all crea on, connectedness with and empowerment of others, may we each, through our thoughts, ac ons, imagina on and prayers, dream a greater world into being by “thinking great things”.
This we pray through Christ our Lord, for the greater Glory of God. Amen.
LORETO GOVERNANCE
On the weekend, Loreto Principals and Chairs of Council from Loreto Schools around Australia gathered in Melbourne to meet with the Loreto Province Leader, Sr Margaret Mary Flynn IBVM and with members of the Na onal Loreto Educa on Council. We met, in part, to refresh and renew our shared Loreto Vision and also to collec vely discuss, discern and shape our preferred future. Being part of a na onal and interna onal “sisterhood” of schools is both a privilege and a blessing. We draw strength, inspira on and wisdom from our tradi on and from each other.
“Loreto is commi ed to a shared mission to transform the Church and the
world par cularly by empowering women to seek truth and do jus ce.”

“We can do only what we think we can do.
We can be only what we think we can be.
We can have only what we think we can have.
What we do, what we are, what we have,
all depend upon what we think”.
Think great things.

_Éàx jxx~ ECDE Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Week concluded last Friday with a trivia quiz and dance off during lunch time. On behalf of the Languages Department, I would like to thank the guest speakers who gave presentations during LOTE Week; Patricia Clunes from Nacel, Dr Geoff Wilkes, Director of Studies at the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, University of Queensland and past student Anna Simpson (Loreto 2011). The presentations provided practical information to current LOTE students about options for continuing their languages study at a tertiary level and gave useful details about participating in exchange programs. Thank you also to Mr John Henderson and Mr Mark Onions for setting up the areas for the lunchtime information sessions and to Mr Chris Henry for his technical support. It was great to see so many language and non-language students take part in the week’s activities so thank you to all the girls who participated in these events. I would particularly like to thank the staff in the Languages Department for their dedication in preparing and attending each lunchtime information session and the LOTE film afternoons. The hard work of Mrs Peita Ward, Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter and Miss Amy Stewart made our second LOTE Week at Loreto a great success! Louise Tilly - Languages Coordinator

The Year 8 Geography classes recently undertook a field trip to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in the beautiful Maleny Hinterland as part of their studies for their current unit on “Rainforests”. Once there, the students experienced first-hand how a sub-tropical rainforest ecosystem functions and were able to identify its various features as they were taken through the reserve. This was largely thanks to the wonderful volunteer guides who, through their love for and knowledge of the area, made the rainforest “come alive”. We would like to thank again the reserve’s educational coordinator, Bob Taylor and his volunteers for providing this excellent community service. Thank you also to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help out on each day; your presence was greatly appreciated. They were on Fiona Greenwood (Isla, 8 Blue), Kerry Donoghue (Melanie Irwin, 8 Gold) , Michelle DiSavia (Brittany,8 Green, Mikaela, 8 White) Elisabeth Mastry (Brigitte, 8Red) and Jane Massingham (Gabrielle Beiers, 8 Red) and Jayne Smith and Sharyn Wing (Rebecca and Cara, 8 White). Also, a big thank you to Loreto staff Anne Herft and Kimberley Lennon for your support on the Friday and to the Year 8 Geography teachers, Annie Diamond, Diane McGowan and Claire Matheson. A great day was had by all on both days. Diane Hanson - Geography Coordinator

Exams are tiring work, so it is important for all Year 12 students to bring a healthy lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday. Whilst a lovely breakfast is provided by the school to help with energy levels during the morning exams, the brain and body will need recharging at lunch time to sustain concentration for the afternoon exams.
The best foods for exams contain
complex carbohydrates for sustained energy (wholegrain breads, pasta)
protein to sustain appetite (legumes, nuts, cheese, eggs, yoghurt, meat)
simple carbohydrates for instant energy (fruit, salad)
Suggestions:
Pasta salad with plenty of vegetables
Cheese or meat and salad on a wholegrain roll or wrap
Salad with heaps of healthy veges, cheese or boiled egg
Yoghurt with fresh fruit . Enjoy!
lxtÜ K ctáà câÑ|Äá `xxà|Çz On 26th July, 8Red had the pleasure of meeting some of Loreto’s past pupils. The difference being, these ladies graduated more than 50 years ago and were therefore in a position to provide a unique insight into the history of Loreto. Now I don’t know if it was the age of these ladies, their grandma like qualities, their sense
of humour, their cuteness or their overall charisma, but their visit created a sense of excitement amongst the girls. We heard stories from when Loreto was a boarding school including one slightly alarming story involving one of the boarders sleep walking and falling four storeys from the balcony. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt. We learnt that their uniforms were grey, itchy and uncomfortable, unlike our present uniform. The ladies commented on how nice the current uniform is and how fortunate we were to not have to wear their old uniforms! For me the most valuable insight I took away from the time spent talking to the past pupils was that friendships formed at Loreto can last a life time. This was evident not only in what the ladies said but in the joy they showed being in the company of their peers. On behalf of 8Red, I would sincerely like to thank all of the ladies that gave up their time to share their Loreto experience with us. We have been left with a greater sense of pride in our school as a result of this visit and perhaps one day we can give back the favour by returning and sharing our Loreto experience. Celebrating… LOTE Week
Book Week French students enjoyed cheese and croissants before watching the popular French film Heart Breaker.
Angel aka Lauren Higgins (11) , won 1st place in
the 2012 Book Week Character Parade.
Many teenagers today are sleep deprived because they don’t get enough sleep. They need between nine and 10 hours sleep each night, yet most get about seven or eight hours sleep. Some get less.
Sleep deprivation is akin to jet lag, where they don’t function at their optimum.
The sleep-wake cycle for teenagers is delayed by up to two hours. That is, they are sleepy later and awake later than when they were children.
Most teens secrete melatonin, which makes them sleepy, around 11.00pm, which makes the time before then a sleepless zone. Children secrete melatonin far earlier than this.
Cortisol, the chemical that wakes them up, is secreted at 8.15am for many teens. It seems the teen brain wants to be asleep just when most have woken up.
One US study found that 20% of teens were asleep in class in the morning, which had catastrophic effects on learning. As a result a number of high schools have delayed the start of school time to accommodate the teen sleep-wake cycle. This enables teens not only to get more sleep but to be at their best (or at least awake) when they are at school.
The results were startling and immediate, including better learning, better behaviour, less fights and fewer kids dropping out of school.
Sleep maximises brain growth, which occurs during adolescence. Sleep also consolidates learning. Sleep research has shown that the brain practises what it has learned during the day when a young person is asleep. So sufficient sleep consolidates past learning as well as keeps a young person fresh to maximise their future learning.
Sleep experts have noted that children who develop good sleep patterns tend to carry these into adolescence.
Good sleep habits include:
1. Regular bed-times. Kids may fight this, but be regular during the week and let kids stay up a little later on weekends.
2. Have a wind-down time of up to 45 minutes prior to bed. This includes, removing TV and other stimuli, calming children down, and limiting food intake (and caffeine for teens).
3. An established bed-time routine that makes the brain associate behaviours such as cleaning your teeth and reading in bed with sleep.
4. Keeping bedrooms for sleep and not for TV. Bedrooms that resemble caves seem to be recommended.
5. Maximising the three sleep cues of: darkness (cave-like bedroom), lowering body temperature (baths can be good for this) and melatonin (work within their cycle).
Better knowledge of the biology of sleep and of sleep patterns, as well as instigating good habits, will go a long way to helping kids and teens get a good night’s sleep. Sleep tips for teens1. Allow them to catch up on lost sleep during the weekends.2. Help your young person schedule their after school
activities to free up more time for rest.3. Discuss ways to limit stimulating activities such as
television and computer around bedtime. Encourage restful activities such as reading.
4. Afternoon naps are good ways to recharge their batteries.5. Make sure they go to bed early each Sunday night to
prepare for the coming week.Published by Michael Grose Presentations. All rights reserved. For more ideas, support and advice for all your parenting challenges visit: www.parentingideas.com.au
