27th Annual Martin Luther King Jr.College of Ministers & Laity
Sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College, the annual College of Ministers and Laity (formerly Religious Emphasis Week and, later, Science and Spiritual Awareness Week) is the Chapel’s signature program. For 27 years, it has attracted some of the brightest minds across an array of disciplines to engage in dialogue, learning and growing. The 2012 College of Ministers and Laity is unique in its juxtaposition of servanthood, scholarship and leadership as requirements for ministry – whether that ministry is performed through formal religion or any other field of endeavor. The conference will provide a creative learning environment in which clergy and laity from diverse backgrounds, distinct faith traditions, and different generations all come together as students of Dr. King’s philosophies and ethical principles to:
! ! REFLECT on their personal calling,
! ! ! FOSTER meaningful relationships with others who are answering their calling, and
! ! ! ! DEVELOP ideas and strategies for taking their calling to the world.

WorldHouse”
In keeping with the theme of the 2012 College, “Showing Up in the World: Answering the Call to Learn, Serve and Lead,” each plenary session will engage the idea of the WorldHouse as developed in the final chapter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” In this essay, Dr. King posits that we are living in revolutionary times that must go beyond science and technological innovation to include a global movement of freedom undergirded by a revolution of values. 45 years after publication of these ideas, we will revisit the notion of the WorldHouse to assess its condition in 2012. We will specifically engage in discussion about the implications of our increasing global kinship for education and commerce and the continued necessity for a global movement of freedom undergirded by a revolution of values. Each plenary session will be followed by discussion groups that will engage the session theme and presentation to explore areas of intersection and resonance with the practical work of ministry, academic scholarship, activism, social service, entrepreneurship, etc.
Health and Wellness Luncheon featuring dietary recommendations and demonstrations, presentations on healthy eating habits, exploring the mind/body/spirit connection, and promoting a culture of health in institutions and communities.
