The Nicene Creed-Symbol of the Catholic Faith
For us men and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy
Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man.-Jesus came from heaven, from a numinous reality other than our own.
While the creed says 'down', it is important to remember that our language is limited. Heaven is not 'up', just as God is no
biological male father. Due to the limits of language, we ascribe heaven symbolically and spatially. God the Son became incarnate in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. He
was born of a Virgin through the Holy Spirit. God became truly human in Jesus Christ. Jesus of Nazareth was and is a real human being and not simply a spirit or a ghost. The
incarnation of God in Christ is the ultimate act of love, because rather than sending an angel or a good human to
establish the redemption and restoration of creation, God Himself became human.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He
suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose
again in fulfillment of the Scriptures-Jesus died on a cross,
suffered as humans do, truly died, and was laid in a tomb.
"The Word became flesh and dwelled among us…" In
John's Gospel, 'flesh' means humanity with all its
limitations Jesus did not pretend to go through the motions
of being human, He truly is! He lived among us, and
shared our lot in life experiencing everything we
experience. Jesus rose from the dead

and appeared to His disciples, spoke with them and ate their
presence to confirm the realty of his resurrection. His body
is a glorified body beyond time and space; He appears and
vanishes, yet still bears the wounds of the Passion on his
body to confirm Thomas' faith. The word 'again' is used
because Jesus' first rising was his birth. To rise again is to
be alive again.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand
of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.
In the ancient science, heaven was thought to be 'up'; we
look up when we pray, at the Liturgy, introducing us to the
Anaphora, the celebrant turns to the East, raises his hands
upward and proclaims; "Let us lift up our hearts." So in the
Scriptures, Jesus is said to 'ascend to heaven'. Whatever
happened that day, Luke said Jesus "went up" to heaven.
He sits at the right hand of God the Father. Again, we are
limited in our language and experience of spatiality. Heaven
is not up, and Jesus sitting at the Fathers' right means
sharing authority with the Father, and not literally sitting
next to Him. Jesus is coming again to righteously judge the
living and the dead. Despite all of humanity's efforts, His
Kingdom cannot be destroyed. The creed says Jesus is
coming; it does not say when or how, nor speculate the date
of his return.
For The Unity of Churches
O Lord, Who have united various nations in the
confession of Your name, we pray to You for the Christian
peoples of the East. Conscious of the eminent position
held by them in Your Church, we implore You to inspire
them with the desire to regain that position that will enable
them to form, with us, one fold and one shepherd. Grant
that we and they may fully understand the teachings of their
Holy Doctors who are also our Fathers in the faith. Guard
us from any indiscretion which may estrange them from us.
May the Spirit of concord and charity, which is a
token of Your presence among the faithful, hasten the day
in which our and their prayers become one — that every
people and every tongue may recognize and glorify our
Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.
"The Angels stand between us and God,
but they are translucent, even transparent,
and they beckon us to penetrate their luminosity."
Pray. There is immeasurable power in it.
