NEW DELHI: While the Capitalexperienced a relativelywarm start to the NewYear, the bright sunshinelasted only a day. The citywoke up to a rainy Friday, with the wet weather con-tinuing throughout theday.

Although the maximumtemperature was recordedat 21.6 degrees Celsius, which was one degreeabove normal, the rainmade the day quite chilly, with Delhiites having toput on a layer of water-proof clothing before head-ing out. Even the minimumtemperature rose by 2.2degrees Celsius settling at10.2 degrees Celsius.

According to the Mete-orological Department, 5.4mm rainfall was recorded

at the Safdarjung and Pa-lam observatories, whileLodhi Road and areas fall-ing near the Ridge record-ed a rainfall of 6.7 mm and3.4 mm, respectively.

MeT official M. Duraisa-my explained that the wetweather was caused due toan interaction of moisture-laden winds blowing acrossIndia from the Bay of Ben-gal and a western disturb-ance. This weather systembrought rain to westernUttar Pradesh, eastern Ra-jasthan and the NationalCapital Region.

He said the cloudyweather is likely to last tillJanuary 4 after which thetemperature will begin tofall by January 6, with thepossibility of cold windsblowing from the NorthWest.

Due to the presence of

moisture, only shallow fogis likely to occur over thenext two days and densefog will only return after

the skies have cleared. Airtraffic remained unaffectedon Friday, while a few trainscontinued to run late.
