MONTH OF THE SACRED HEART · In the Catholic
tradition, the month of June is a time to honor
the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion to the
Sacred Heart is concerned with the love and
compassion that is poured fourth from the heart
of Jesus towards humanity. The devotion was
popularized by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Intercessory Prayer
The prayers of intercession that we pray for one another is a part
of how we care for one another. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it
again, when someone asks you for a prayer, stop what you’re
doing and pray right there. Jon Leonetti
Just as in a physical body the operation of one member contrib-
utes to the good of the whole body, so it is in a spiritual body
such as the Church. St. Thomas Aquinas

2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Help Build a Civilization of Love
We have received pledges totaling $45,425.00
of our $50,000 goal and payments totaling
$44,512.50 from 135 parishioners. This
represents 91% of our parish goal.
Thank you for your generosity! With just a little more effort
and sacrifice, we can meet our goal. If you haven’t already
pledged, would you please
prayerfully consider joining our
efforts? Thank you!
23 June, 2019 – Corpus Christi
“They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled
twelve wicker baskets.” (Luke 9:17)
The story of the Loaves and Fishes shows us that when
we share what we have, even if it doesn’t seem like
that much, miracles can happen! Do not think that
your gift is too small or insignificant! God blesses all
the gifts we offer and makes them wondrous.
St. John Chrysostom, in a commentary on the Eucharist,
teaches us how to do this.
“Do you want to honor Christ’s body? Then do not scorn
him in his nakedness, nor honor him here in the church
with silken garments while neglecting him outside where
he is cold and naked. For he who said: ‘This is my body’,
and made it so by his words, also said: ‘You saw me hun-
gry and did not feed me...inasmuch as you did not do it
for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did not do
it for me.’ (Matthew 25:42a, 45b) What we do here in
the church requires a pure heart, not special garments;
what we do outside (the church) requires great dedica-
tion."
The vocation of every Christian is to be a vessel that
shows Christ and the Church to the world. Only by
“being what we receive and receiving what we are” will
the “Amen” we speak to the words “The Body of Christ”
be true.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Perhaps more than anyone else, Augustine is a saint for
our times; the man with the "restless heart" who looked
for love in all the wrong places, the seeker of truth who
turned to the falsehoods of the "new age" religions of his
time, the "bad boy" who found Christ when he finally
reached the bottom of his sin-sick soul. Augustine's life
shows us who we can become when we confuse love for
pleasure, truth for opinion, and evil for good. But Au-
gustine also shows us who we can become when God’s
grace cuts through our confusion and we encounter the
love, truth, and goodness we really seek; Jesus Christ.
Oscar Wilde summed it up nicely when he said, “Every
saint has a past and every sinner had a future.”
Reflecting on the mystery of Christ in the Eucharist, Au-
gustine said, “The Lord left us in this sacrament His
Body and Blood. Now we are called to become His
Body, and through His mercy we are what we receive. If
you have receive well, you are what you have re-
ceived...You hear the words, 'The Body of Christ'. You
answer, 'Amen'. Be therefore members of Christ that
your 'Amen' may be true. Be what you see and receive
what you are.”
Hopefully, we all know what a monstrance is: It’s the
vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is displayed. In
fact, the word "monstrance" comes from the Latin word
meaning "to display or show". With the words of Augus-
tine in mind, the vocation of every Christian is to
"become what we receive". In a sense, our vocation is to
be a "monstrance"; a vessel that displays the mystery of
Christ and the Church, the mystery of salvation and
communion. What the vessel looks like - big or small,
gilded and bejeweled or simple and humble - is not as
important as what it displays.

“…This is why the Word was made flesh, died and
rose and gave us his Spirit; this is why he left us
the Eucharist, so that we could live on him as he
lives on the Father. The Eucharist is the sacrament
of the gift Christ made of himself
for us: he is the sacrament of love
and peace, which is the fullness of
life.”

CONTINUED MESSAGES FROM THE PASTOR
Priest and Staff Personnel Changes
Last week I was informed by our Director
of Priest Personnel that Fr. James DeFil-
lipps, our parochial vicar and chaplain to
the Catholic Center, has been reas-
signed to St. Bartholomew Church, East
Brunswick as its new parochial vicar. Fr.
James has served our parish and cam-
pus ministry community with a true
priestly heart and has been a source of
blessing for us these past several years.
I, for one, will miss him as I know many
of you will as well.
Bishop Checchio has assigned Fr. Dario
Endiape to our parish and campus min-
istry as both parochial vicar and chap-
lain. Fr. Dario is a native of the Philip-
pines and has served in several parishes
in the Diocese of Metuchen, most re-
cently at St. Bartholomew in East Bruns-
wick. The effective date of this transfer
is July 8, 2019.
I have also been informed by Anne-Marie
Calderone that she will be leaving our
parish staff at the end of July. Anne-
Marie is facing imminent knee surgery
and a lengthy recovery process that will
require her to be attentive to herself and
her needs. I can’t say enough about
Anne Marie! She has been such a serv-
ant to our parish, giving of herself so
generously in both our religious educa-
tion program and in office administra-
tion with such professionalism, love, and
faithfulness. She will be greatly missed!
Sr. Lorraine Doiron, SJH, who currently
serves on the pastoral staff of the Cath-
olic Center, will be replacing Anne-Marie
Calderone as the Parish Catechetical
Leader while retaining her mission to our
university students. She will be assisted
by Sr. Donna Marie Lasota, SJH, who has
recently relocated from the Sisters of Je-
sus our Hope motherhouse in Holland
Twp. to their New Brunswick convent.
Please join me in prayer for Fr. James, Fr.
Dario, Anne-Marie Calderone, Sr. Lorri-
ane and Sr. Donna Marie during this
time of transition.

Fiscal Reporting
For the past several months, the Parish
Finance Council and I have been working
on budgets and a reporting mechanism
on the Sunday offering in an effort to be
more fiscally transparent and accounta-
ble to you, our parishioners who support
the life and mission of the parish. The
formula we have constructed is a simple
one to help you understand the Sunday
offering, which is the primary means by
which we fund the operations of our par-
ish, in the context of our weekly budget-
ary needs. This new collection reporting
mechanism will begin with the new fiscal
year on July 1, 2019.
