Na onal Science Week 2014 On Friday 21 st August our school will be involved in celebra ng the 2014 Na onal Science Week . The theme this yearis ‘Science Feeding the World’. Our students will be involved in engaging ac vi es linked to this theme which aim todevelop students’ interest and knowledge of Science.

Students will be split into mul-aged groups and rotate through ve exci ng ac vi es run by each of our classroomteachers. Ac vi es will run from 9.10am to 12.00pm , at which point normal classes will resume. We are looking

forward to the wonderful learning opportuni es and many photos that will result from the ac vi es. A special thanksto Mr John for his coordina on of this event.

Enrolment for Kindergarten 2015 Children born between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011 are eligible for Kindergarten next year. If you are the parent ofany such child, make sure you complete an Applica on for Enrolment form available from the school o ce ASAP. Dueto parents who have not had other school age children perhaps not being aware of this, you are pleased asked toassist them by providing this informa on. If you know of recent new arrivals or residents to our area, please directthem to the school.

Protec ve Behaviour Workshops On Tuesday 16th September, students from Kindergarten to Year Seven will be par cipa ng in a school funded 45minute workshop run by the Protec ve Behaviour Team. The aim of the Protec ve Behaviour Program is to educatechildren on their rights to personal safety through the following themes, appropriate to their year level.

We all have the right to feel safe at all mes and feelings Early warning signs (the physical sensa ons we experience in our body when feeling unsafe or excited) Safety Con nuum (safe/fun to feel scared/risking on purpose/unsafe) We can talk to someone about anything, no ma er what it is & Safe Secrets/Unsafe Secrets Body Awareness and Ownership Personal Space

Community/Parent Occupa on Survey We are compiling a database of parent occupa ons . The overall goal is to involve parents in broadening the scopeand opportunity for authen c learning experiences for our students. Students have much to learn from exposure tooccupa ons that exist in 'the real world'. This may take the form of listening to a talk, watching a video, interviewingsomeone or even an excursion. A lot of learning can ow from such experiences both on a personal and academiclevel.

Room 2 - Liz Smith In Pre -primary we have really been enjoying the hands -on aspect of our topic, weare really ge ng a chance to put our knowledge in ac on this Science Week.On Monday, we had a special visitor – Tony the Gardener. He taught us how tomix po ng soil and successfully bed plants. We all made our own bio -degradablenewspaper plant pot for our frangipani stumps and planted our seedlings.

We’re loving watching our own beanstalks grow before our very eyes and we caniden fy the root, shoot and bean pod; we’ve been documen ng these weekly

changes inour bean

diaries.

Room 1 - Lisa Miller

It has been a very busy and exci ng week in Kindy. As part of our Numeracy program within our class we have counted everyday we have been to school since the beginning of the year. On Tuesday we reached our goal of ’50 days at Kindy’ so we hada party to celebrate! During our special day we decorated, cut and measured a 50 day headband to wear, made a snack bag containing 50 snacks,iced 50 cupcakes and discussed how we would look and feel when we were 50 years old (very old when you are in kindy!)We had such a great day!

Room 3 - Avril Mulligan

Over the last couple of weeks we have been lucky enough to have some special visitors comeinto the classroom to share their stories with us. To help us nd out more about school life in the past for our History inves ga on, Arlo’s grand -parents came to share their stories and memories. We found out some fascina ng things, whichinspired many ques ons from the children. Thank you Faith and Bob for your visit, and for theold photos you brought to show us. We also had Teena the children’s author come to read us some of her books, and to talk about

what it means to be awriter. The childrenthen made somestory puppetcharacters of their own, and have begun theplanning process for the wri ng of their ownnarra ve. Teena will visit us again later in theterm so we can show her our nished books.

Rooms 5 - Brent Snook

In room ve over the past few weeks we have been piecingtogether important informa on about our past. This has includedbirth cer cates, background on family & important friendships aswell as places where we have grown up. All this informa on is beingcollected in order to help us write our very own autobiography. Wewould like to thank Phoebe, Woonsen and Lini from room sevenwho were able to share their excellent autobiographies with us. Inorder to start our autobiographies we need to collect someinforma on based on signi cant events that have happened in ourlives. This can be anything from spor ng or academic triumphs, tomoving towns or ci es. Your help from home on the ner detailssuch as speci c dates would be greatly appreciated!

It is great to see all students from room ve giving it their allrunning the cross country track each day.

Room 4 - Rochelle Reeves & Belinda Baldey

Room 7 - Chris John

The year sixes and sevens have been pu ng in the hard yards on the cross -country track Mondays to Thursdays in prepara onfor the Fun Run on the 27 th and our cross country on the 10 th September. In the classroom the students have completed theirgraphing unit and have moved onto comparing and measuring angles with Miss Schmedje. Over the next two weeks we will bestudying inspira onal Australians under the categories of Bravery, Leadership and Overcoming Adversity. We’ve alreadydiscussed the work of Nick Vujicic, amo va onal speaker born without arms orlegs, and researched key individuals inAustralia’s history such as the Bali bombinghero Jason McCartney, the fearless prisonerof war Sir Edward Dunlop, and the Antarc c

explorer Sir Douglas Mawson.

Room 4 have been very, very busy this past two weeks. We have been learning allabout division. We have discovered that there are many names for the opera onsuch as; divide, share, groups of.We have con nued wri ng poems and our latest type are Limericks. Our ‘Poet ofthe Week’ project is going well and we have had some entertaining poems.

Last week we were very lucky to have a special visitor. Her name was Teena Ra a-

Mulligan. She is Ms Mulligan’s mother. Teena is a very talented children’s authorand she showed us the process that she goes through when wri ng a book. Hermessage was ‘if you can write then you can become a writer’. We were luckyenough to receive one of her books called ‘Jimbo! Don’t go!’ There has been a lot of co -opera ve play at lunch me recently building cubbiesup the back of our school. If you get a chance you could visit some of them.Our lovely Miss Richards, who was our prac teacher last term, visited us last weekto see how we were ge ng along. It was lovely to see her and we miss her a lot.This term we introduced a new ac vity for the mornings called ‘Think About’. Wehave done some interes ng wri ng and drawing based on our topic of Space. Wehave just designed some ‘moon buggies’. Come and have a look if you get a

Art News— Margie Campbell

North Fremantle Primary has been accepted to enter the Royal Show Poultry Art compe on. The students will be drawing ourschool chickens, that are kindly being ferried back to the school from the Temby household where they are currently residing.

The pictures will be on display in the poultry shed at the show so if you are intending to visit the show please go along and have alook.

Music News— Kelly Branch

On Thursday

the 7th

ofAugust I hadthe greatpleasure oftaking theNorthFremantleChoir to a end a rehearsal for the Schools Make Music Concert heldat the Crown Theatre in Burswood. Then met up with them again thatevening for their nal performance. I felt even though our choir was

small compared to some other schools on the night our students sang with con dence and enthusiasm which I was incrediblyproud of. It can be a daun ng experience to perform for an audience of two thousand plus and I think the students did afantas c job. Well done also to our ribbon twirlers and the ‘Rather Be’ dancers who gave up a lot of their own me to learnextra parts. Thank you to Paula Schmedje and Liz Magry whohelped at the rehearsal. Also special thanks to Mrs Baldey, RenaeNoack and Lani Levi who helped the Choir and myself on the nightas I wouldn’t have been able to o er this opportunity without your

support so I’mvery grateful.Finally a very bigthank you to themany parentswho came alongto support thestudents, I hopedyou enjoyed thenight as much aswe did.
