1964 CIVIL RIGHTS ACT• A goal of Kennedy’s, passed by Johnson

• It helped that he was Southern• Banned discrimination in public places based

on race, religion, gender, or national origin• Federal govt. would keep an eye on states who

discriminated (the South)

FREEDOM SUMMER (1964)• Black and white college students who

offered to help black Mississippians register to vote• Three were killed by Klansmen…

• Who were acquitted of the murder charges by a white jury

VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965• Dr. King led a march from Selma, AL to

Montgomery AL in March 1965• Once again brutally attacked by white police

• Literacy tests for voting were outlawed• Federal govt. would keep an eye on

problematic states
