March 2008
Welcome to the Toronto Catholic District School Board Music Education Festival. The students performing in the Festival are presenting the culmination of a journey which has allowed them to develop many skills: singing, playing an instrument, performing as an ensemble, cooperation, patience. While we live in a world where the sound of music is frequently as ubiquitous as wallpaper, research tells us that it is making music which is key to en-hanced development. The students participating in our Festival have learned to make music, and will reap the many benefits that arise from this endeavour, benefits which will last throughout their lives. Plato said, Music “gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything.” Music makes us fully human, fully alive. To those teachers who have shared their love of music and have worked to prepare their students for the Festival, I express my thanks. To the school administrators who recognized the importance for their students of the op-portunity to perform as an ensemble, I express my appreciation. And to all those students who have practised and persevered to present their best pos-sible performances, I express my hearty congratulations.

TORONTO CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
ELEMENTARY MUSIC EDUCATION FESTIVAL
March 18 — April 18, 2008
O sing a new song to the Lord sing to the Lord all the earth
O sing to the Lord, bless his name Ps.96 The Music Department of the Toronto Catholic District School Board is proud to present Music Education Festival 2008. This year over 200 groups featuring approximately 7,000 students from both the elementary and secondary panels will perform for each other and an adjudicator. Sessions are planned over a three and half week period in various locations across Toronto. Information regarding specific dates, concerts, and school participation is provided in later pages of this booklet. You are invited to attend any session.
Psalm 150 With all creatures, we sing our praise to God. Alleluia Praise God in God’s holy place Praise God in God’s mighty heaven Praise God for God’s powerful deeds Praise God’s surpassing greatness. O praise God with the sound of trumpet Praise God with lute and harp Praise God with timbrel and dance Praise God with strings and pipes. O praise God with resounding cymbals Praise God with clashing of cymbals Let everything that lives and that breathes give praise to the Lord. Alleluia

OBJECTIVES
To promote a love for choral and instrumental music. To promote excellence in choral and instrumental performance. To provide an opportunity for children to learn from other children. To expose teachers and students to good choral and instrumental repertoire. To provide an opportunity to exchange choral and instrumental ideas. To provide positive and constructive feedback to students and teachers by means of adjudication. To provide an opportunity to involve multiple age and staff levels. To make choral and instrumental festivals important events. To develop a sense of community in school, between schools and outside school through singing and playing.
STRUCTURE The music education festival is a non-competitive, positive and constructive music event. Several performing groups will gather for a session in either the morning or the afternoon. They will perform for each other and an adjudicator. Each choir will sing one selection from the list, and another selection of their own choice. Instrumental groups must perform two selections: one from the list provided, one own choice (with the exception of CLASS 604, 704, 804, 904). All conductors should consider variety in selections. Their adjudicator will verbally comment on the overall performance and perhaps work with the whole group on one or two items; the adjudicator will also provide a written commentary for each group and give it to the conductor.
