2019 MODELINFORMATION MODEL NAME Z900RS / Z900RS CAFE
Kawasaki
Classic Design + Modern Technology = Z900RS
Inheriting the elegant styling of the original 1972 Z1, the new
Z900RS immediately identifies itself as "Kawasaki" to an amazing degree. At the same time, the new model incorporates the latest technological advancements,
enhancing retro style with cutting-edge performance. However, this new model is engineered to make a strong statement about the Kawasaki brand through a revised set of
priorities. While outright speed is an important value, throughout the final product we have focused our skills on overall performance, to honour our unique brand history, heritage, and standards of quality.
Augmenting the Z900RS is the Z900RS CAFE, which features
a cafe-racer style cowl and seat, drop handlebars, brushed silencer finish and unique colour and graphics styles.

1. Liquid-Cooled, 4-Stroke, DOHC, 16-Valve Engine
The original Z1 guaranteed that premier performance would thereafter be packaged in an inline four-cylinder package, a design that became the pride of the Kawasaki brand. Designer Gyoichi "Ben" lnamura* and his team created an engine packing 15 more peak horsepower than the top Norton of its day. It also delivered a broad, highly tractable powerband.
*Gyoichi lnamura developed the first four cylinder DOHC engine for
Kawasaki and is the forefather of Z-series engines.
So does the new Z900RS. With peak horsepower of 82kW (111PS) at 8,500min-1, the new Z has nearly 50% more power to work with, and it's applied to a low to mid RPM delivery that will be a revelation to riders of all ages. It's powerful and smooth from urban highways to winding roads. This motorcycle is not just for expert big-bike riders. It's designed to provide an inspiring riding experience for nearly everyone, with an incredibly broad torque curve, peaking at 98.5N • m(10.0kgf·m, 72.6ft ·lb) at 6,500 RPM.
The specifications mentioned here apply to and have been achieved by production
models under standard operating conditions. We intend only to give a fair description of
the vehicle and its performance capabilities but these specifications may not apply to
every machine supplied for sale.
2019 MY Z900RS MODEL INFORMATION
The liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve 948 cm3 inline four unit is based
on that of the Z900, but for the Z900RS Kawasaki engineers wanted
to create a completely different engine character. While the Z900
engine has a sharp, quick-revving nature that encourages high-RPM
operation, the Z900RS was tuned for the low-mid range, delivering
strong torque that enhances the experience or performance for
riders of all skill levels.
The crowning touch is a soul-stirring exhaust note, achieved through
a sensuality evaluation process for the first time in Kawasaki's
history. The ultimate riding experience now comes with seemingly
endless power and truly captivating sound. Kawasaki's experience
with sound tuning started with the 2014 through 2016 Z1000 and
2017 Z900, leveraging this know-how when designing the Z900RS.
* Cylinder HeadAlthough liquid-cooled, the engine features stylish fins that conjure
up an air-cooled image in a nod to the Z1 heritage. The sides of the
head feature a partially buffed finish that is a classy retro touch.
* Camshaft
Relatively shorter angle of cam profiles delivers stronger power at
low-mid RPM as well as the smooth power delivery typical of
four-cylinder engines. Cam profiles with shorter intake (270o>>248o)
and exhaust (256o>>244o) duration focus engine performance on
the low-mid RPM range. A strong and smooth response makes the
engine very manageable. Complementing the shorter-duration cam
profiles, the compression pressure was lowered to 10.8:1 (compared
to 11.8:1 on the Z900).
5
* Combustion Chambers
The chamber shape and combustion ratio optimally exploits the Z's
cam characteristics, for power that feels super-smooth and easy to
modulate. The pre-chamber enhances environmental performance,
enables a smaller silencer design and contributes to the carefully
crafted exhaust note.
* PistonsThe light and rigid pistons were crafted with a unique casting
process similar to forging that removes unnecessary material and
creates hollows to achieve the ideal thickness. AV-groove on the
piston's 2nd land helps control pressure between the piston rings by
idealising the gas volume. This helps to prevent top ring fluttering
and maintain a better gas seal, reducing blow-by gas and oil
consumption.
* CrankshaftThis has an approximately 12% greater flywheel mass than the
Z900, adding to the feeling of strong, tractable power at low-mid
RPM - all with the depth of horsepower typical of four-cylinder
engines. A secondary balancer driven off a gear on the sixth web of
the crankshaft eliminates excess vibration.
* Intake Funnels
The length was adjusted to enhance the low-mid power
characteristics that only a four-cylinder engine can deliver.
2019 MY Z900RS MODEL INFORMATION
* Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
All settings are programmed to achieve the strongest possible
performance over the entire rev range, enhancing the super-smooth
power delivery.
* Drive Train
We put a clear emphasis on easy urban manoeuvrability as well as
long-distance comfort by making first gear short, and sixth gear
long. Thus starting from every stop is effortless, and velvety power
is ensured at highway speeds.
* Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC)
The Z900RS' KTRC system offers two performance modes-one
for optimum sport riding performance, and one for optimum stability
in slippery conditions by preventing wheel slip. In Mode 1, highlysophisticated programming allows a degree of slip to maximise
acceleration. Mode 2 uses the same logic and control as in Mode 1
during normal operation. When excessive rear wheel spin is
detected, however, Mode 2 switches to three-way control, governing
ignition timing, fuel delivery, and airflow, reducing engine output so
the rear wheel regains grip. By default, the system is always on
when the engine is started. To ride with the system off, riders must
consciously turn it off using the mode button on the left grip.
6
* Assist & Slipper Clutch
The assist and slipper cams offer two
functions not available on a standard
clutch. At normal RPMs, the assist cam
functions pull the clutch hub and
operating plate together to compress the
clutch plates, reducing the clutch spring
load and lightening the clutch lever pull.
Under heavy engine braking from quick
or accidental downshifts, the slipper cam
forces the clutch hub and operating plate apart, relieving pressure
on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and prevent rear tyre
hopping and skidding.

2. Exhaust & Sound Tuning
Achieving optimal power and sound is a highly complex balancing act. We engaged in a long process of experiments, with various
parameters, prototypes, and sophisticated analysis to achieve a new
level of performance on both counts. This unprecedented development process included:
1. A series of alterations of the length and diameter of exhaust pipes
and their shapes.2. Multiple alterations of the exhaust chamber shape and position.
3. Multiple experiments with every other detail - including even the
length as well as the density of the glass wool.
7
As a result, we are confident that we are now offering the best
exhaust system on the market. The new Z generates a low, thick exhaust note that perfectly matches its retro image. While complying
with every applicable regulation, this exhaust delivers volume and
tone that virtually shout power. It also clears Euro 4 regulations
through catalysers in the collector pipe that clean the emissions.
* Exhaust Pipes
A triple-buff process ensures a classy, premium look. Double-wall
stainless pipes are elaborately bent to achieve the precisely
engineered system, which forgoes a connecting pipe to achieve
aesthetics that best match the unique retro look. Thus the new Z
delivers the highest-quality sound, performance, and style. Note that
the Z900RS CAFE silencer features a hairline finish instead of buff
treatment.
* Chamber
A painstakingly crafted stainless-steel exhaust chamber enables
compact silencer design, and enhances the breakthrough retro
exhaust note. Its positioning ensures efficient mass-centralisation.
* Silencer
The short megaphone silencer was achieved by straightening the
inner structure. Many experiments were conducted to determine the
optimal density and other features of the glass wool. Thisstainless-steel silencer puts a strong emphasis on both style and
exhaust sound that are unique to the retro category. The rigorous
exhaust development process has yielded a system that is truly the
best match for the Z900RS.

3. Frame & Bodywork
Designed with easy manoeuvrability as the highest priority, the
teardrop fuel tank was placed at the optimal position in ergonomic
terms, and the 35° steering angle ensures a package with a tight
turning radius. The unique look is achieved by crafting every
component with the latest technology, while applying retro visual
cues throughout, providing a look and feel that you can enjoy whether relaxed or racing.
* Trellis Frame
The frame was completely redesigned to accommodate the slimteardrop fuel tank and offer retro handling optimal for enjoyable
riding at a more measured pace. A relatively large upper/under
bracket steering offset helps achieve the natural yet agile steering
control suitable for a retro-style model. In addition, the narrow
spacing of twin mainframe tubes under the fuel tank delivers both
suitable stiffness and a slim body. This
new trellis-style frame was designed with
an emphasis on balance, from size to
overall form.
8
* Rear Suspension
* Front Suspension
Top performance is achieved with an
adjustable 41mm inverted fork.
Easy-to-adjust settings match
everything from city streets to winding
country roads, providing comfort and
handling to accommodate rider
preferences and riding styles.
To ensure ideal mass
centralisation, optimal exhaust
tuning, and superior handling, we
adopted a single-shock and
Horizontal Back-Link rear
suspension. With this design, the
exhaust chamber is nearly
invisible, adding to the simple,
beautiful profile. This design
contributes to the natural and relaxed handling typical of a retro bike.
It also ensures that the suspension is far enough from the exhaust
that operation is not affected by heat.
2019 MY Z900RS MODEL INFORMATION
* Front and Rear Brakes
The 300mm front discs employ radial-mount calipers, and a
radial-pump master cylinder with a 19mm-diameter piston highly
reminiscent of the Z1. This braking system is designed with an
emphasis on control rather than pure stopping power, ensuring
maximum possible performance with highly linear braking feel. The
machined monobloc calipers feature an alumite coating and are
laser-etched with a Kawasaki logo, adding to the bike's high-quality
sporty look. A radial-pump front brake master cylinder contributes
to the superb control and feel offered by the calipers. A newlydesigned 250mm rear disc employs a single-piston caliper,
ensuring highly predictable performance. Sintered brake pads frontand rear contribute to the control and feel. The compact, light
Nissin motorcycle ABS unit provides added reassurance inemergency situations.
9
* Wheels & Tyres
The new cast wheels are the
result of Kawasaki's advanced
analytic technology, achieving
the optimal balance between
appearance and weight
reduction. This unique cast
design offers a wire spoke-like
appearance that highlights
differences in spoke style for an
especially classy look. The wheels are fitted with Dunlop GPR 300
tyres, made with a compound designed exclusively for the Z900RS,
which ensure superior handling and suitable retro style. A low
unsprung weight from savings with the swingarm and wheels
contributes greatly to the light, natural handling.

4. Quality Components and Surface Finishes
To help achieve the most impressive "Timeless Z" model concept,
we put extra emphasis on quality that offers higher value regardless
of era. In order to highlight the retro feel of the Z1, classic curves are
paired with the latest components in a refined design. Rounded
design elements are applied from front to back, and further accented
with special paint for a sharp, classy look.
