The mission of Newman International Academy is to train and educate future generations of young men and women with wisdom, stature and favor; to give students opportunities to become whole individuals ready to serve the world by helping them reach their highest potential, and to provide in partnership with parents and community a well-rounded education within the context of American heritage. 1

Overview

InkeepingwithNewmanInternationalAcademy’smissiontoeducatestudentstogrowinwisdom,stature,theWorkforceinTrainingatNewman(WIN)programprovidesstudentswithreal-worldwork,

volunteer,internship,andtravelexperiencesthatwillpreparethemforcollege,career,citizenship,anddevelopglobalawarenessandculturalunderstandings.TheseexperiencesareprovidedthroughprovisionscreatedbyTexasHouseBill5andthroughstrategicpartnershipswithindividuals,businesses,

nonprofitorganizations,foundations,andotherentities.Inaddition,WINprovidesopportunitiesforstudentstoengagewithfacultymembersandadministratorsinlearningexperiencesthatextendbeyondtheclassroomwalls.

Goals&Objectives

Specifically,WINisdesignedto:§ CreateserviceopportunitiesthatallowNewmanAcademystudentstofulfillgraduation

requirementsforservicehours(30hoursperyearor120hourstotal)§ CreateoncampusserviceopportunitiesforNewmanAcademystudentstofulfill50percentof

theirservicehours(foratotalof60hoursduringHighSchool)

StudentPlacementProcess

StudentparticipationintheWINprogramwillbeginwithaprogramorientation/meetingthatmustbe

attendedbythestudent,hisorherparentorguardian,andtheschoolcounselor.Followingattendanceatanorientation/meeting,theplacementprocessfortheunpaidinternshipwillincludeanapplicationfilledoutbythestudenttolearnareasofinterestsandreferencechecks.Thestudentwillbeprovideda

listofapprovedpartneringorganizationstofulfilltheirinternshiphours,andmayhaveanadditionalinterviewprocesswithpartnerpersonnel.AllpartnerpersonnelwhoworkdirectlywithNewmanAcademystudentswillagreetosignacontractwithNewman.Allparticipatingpartieswillagreeto

releaseNewmanAcademyanditsagentsfromanyliabilitythatmayresultfromthestudent’splacementorserviceintheWINprogram.

StudentSupervision&Monitoring

CentraltothesuccessofWINisthesystemofstudentsupervisionandprogrammonitoringinplaceat

allparticipatingNewmanAcademycampuses.Faculty,staffandadministratorswillserveascampuscoordinators,fieldliaisonstopartnerorganizations,andasmentorstostudentsenrolledintheprogram.Allparticipatingstaffwillreceiveinitialandongoingtrainingandwillbeinvolvedinongoingprogram

assessment.

Liaisonswillserveasfieldrepresentativesandwillmeetwithpartnerpersonnelwhosupervisestudents,willobservestudents,willdevelopandassesscurriculumobjectivesandassignmentsforstudents,andwillhelpstudentsdesignandproduceportfolios.Astipendwillbeprovidedtopersonnelfortheextra

dutiestheyincurwiththeWINprogram,ifWINisnotalreadyapartoftheirjobportfolio.

NewmanWarriorServiceHoursAwardLevels

GoldLevelStudentsearngoldlevelrecognitionforvolunteering35ormoreservicehoursperyear.Studentsearngoldlevelrecognitionforinternshiphoursof40ormoreperyear.Orstudentsearngoldlevelrecognitionfor200hoursormoreofcombinedinternshipandvolunteeringservicehoursbythetimeheorshegraduates.BlueLevelStudentsearnbluelevelrecognitionforvolunteering20hoursormoreservicehoursperyear.Studentsearnbluelevelrecognitionforinternshiphoursof30ormoreperyear.Orstudentsearnbluelevelrecognitionfor150hoursormoreofcombinedinternshipandvolunteeringservicehoursbythetimeheorshegraduates.RedLevelStudentsearnredlevelrecognitionforserving10ormoreservicehoursperyear.Studentsearnredlevelrecognitionforinternshiphoursof20ormoreperyear.Orstudentsearnredlevelrecognitionfor120hoursormoreofcombinedinternshipandvolunteeringservicehoursbythetimeheorshegraduates.StudentConsequencesforFailuretoMeetWINRequirements

StudentswhofailtomeettherequirednumberofhoursfortheWINprogram(10hoursforcommunityserviceand20hoursforunpaidinternship/workbasedexperienceperhighschoolyearforatotalof120hoursbygraduation)willhavethefollowingconsequences:

1. FailuretoGraduate–ThisisagraduationrequirementofNewmanInternationalAcademyand

assuchisrequiredtobecompletedinordertograduatefromNewmanAcademy.Ifthe

minimumof120hoursofcombinedvolunteerserviceandinternshipexperienceisnotcompletedstudentswillnotgraduate.

2. Additionalhoursadded&requiredtocomplete–Iftherequiredhoursarenotmetperacademicyearforvolunteerservice(10hours)and/orinternship(20hours),5morehourswill

beaddedtothenextcalendaryearintherespectivecategory.I.e.15hoursneededinsteadoftherequired10forcommunityserviceand/or25hoursforinternship/work-basedexperienceinsteadoftherequired20.

Transferstudentswilldoaminimumof30hours(10hoursofcommunityserviceand20hoursofunpaid

internship/work-basedexperience)eachyeartheyarewithNewmanAcademy.

Anyportfolioisacreativeproduct,buttheseguidelinesshouldsparkyourimaginationandhelpyoudevelopacompleteanduser-friendlyfinalproduct.PortfoliocontentswillvaryaccordingtotheEndorsement,careerpath,andinternshipplacementchosen.StudentswillhavetheguidanceoftheirteachersandWINliaisonastheycompletetheirportfolios.Yourinternshipportfolioisacollectionofartifactsthatthoroughlydocumenttheworkyouhavedoneandtheknowledgeandskillsyouhaveacquiredasanintern.Itshouldalsohelpyou:
