    Thise-textcomesfrommultipleeditionsofChalloner’srevisedDouay-RheimsVersionoftheHolyBible.In1568Englishexiles,manyfromOxford,establishedtheEnglishCollegeofDouay(Douai/Doway),Flanders,underWilliam(laterCardinal)Allen.InOctober,1578,GregoryMartinbegantheworkofpreparinganEnglishtranslationoftheBibleforCatholicreaders,thefirstsuchtranslationintoModernEnglish.AssistingwereWilliamAllen,RichardBristow,ThomasWorthington,andWilliamReynoldswhorevised,criticized,andcorrectedDr.Martin’swork.ThecollegepublishedtheNewTestamentatRheims(Reims/Rhemes),France,in1582throughJohnFognywithaprefaceandexplanatorynotes,authoredchieflybyBristol,Allen,andWorthington.LatertheOldTestamentwaspublishedatDouayintwoparts(1609and1610)byLaurenceKellamthroughtheeffortsofDr.Worthington,thensuperioroftheseminary.ThetranslationhadbeenpreparedbeforetheappearanceoftheNewTestament,butthepublicationwasdelayedduetofinancialdifficulties.ThereligiousandscholarlyadherencetotheLatinVulgatetextledtothelesselegantandidiomaticwordsandphrasesoftenfoundinthetranslation.InsomeinstanceswherenoEnglishwordconveyedthefullmeaningoftheLatin,aLatinwordwasAnglicizedanditsmeaningdefinedinaglossary.Althoughridiculedbycritics,manyofthesewordslaterfoundcommonusageintheEnglishlanguage.SpellingsofpropernamesandthenumberingofthePsalmsareadoptedfromtheLatinVulgate.

    In1749Dr.RichardChallonerbeganamajorrevisionoftheDouayandRheimstexts,thespellingsandphrasingofwhichhadbecomeincreasinglyarchaicinthealmosttwocenturiessincethetranslationswerefirstproduced.Hemodernizedthedictionandintroducedamorefluidstyle,whilefaithfullymaintainingtheaccuracyofDr.Martin’stexts.Thisrevisionbecamethe‘defacto’standardtextforEnglishspeakingCatholicsuntilthetwentiethcentury.Itisstillhighlyregardedbymanyforitsstyle,althoughitisnowrarelyusedforliturgicalpurposes.ThenotesincludedinthiselectroniceditionaregenerallyattributedtoBishopChalloner.

    ThisbookissocalledfromitstreatingoftheGENERATION,thatis,ofthecreationandthebeginningoftheworld.TheHebrewscallitBERESITH,fromtheWordwithwhichitbegins.ItcontainsnotonlythehistoryoftheCreationoftheworld;butalsoanaccountofitsprogressduringthespaceof2369years,thatis,untilthedeathofJOSEPH.

    GenesisChapter1

    GodcreatethHeavenandEarth,andallthingstherein,insixdays.

    1:1.InthebeginningGodcreatedheaven,andearth.

    1:2.Andtheearthwasvoidandempty,anddarknesswasuponthefaceofthedeep;andthespiritofGodmovedoverthewaters.

    1:3.AndGodsaid:Belightmade.Andlightwasmade.

    1:4.AndGodsawthelightthatitwasgood;andhedividedthelightfromthedarkness.

    1:5. And he called the light Day, and the darkness Night; and there was evening andmorningoneday.

    1:6.AndGodsaid:Lettherebeafirmamentmadeamidstthewaters:andletitdividethewatersfromthewaters.

    Afirmament…Bythisnameishereunderstoodthewholespacebetweentheearth,andthehigheststars.Thelowerpartofwhichdivideththewatersthatareupontheearth,fromthosethatareaboveintheclouds.

    1:7.Andgodmadea firmament,anddivided thewaters thatwereunder the firmament,fromthosethatwereabovethefirmament,anditwasso.

    1:8. And God called the firmament, Heaven; and the evening and morning were thesecondday.

    1:9.Godalsosaid;Letthewatersthatareundertheheaven,begatheredtogetherintooneplace:andletthedrylandappear.Anditwassodone.

    1:10.AndGod called the dry land, Earth; and the gathering together of thewaters, hecalledSeas.AndGodsawthatitwasgood.

    1:11.Andhesaid:lettheearthbringforthgreenherb,andsuchasmayseed,andthefruittreeyieldingfruitafteritskind,whichmayhaveseedinitselfupontheearth.Anditwassodone.

    1:12.Andtheearthbroughtforththegreenherb,andsuchasyieldethseedaccordingtoitskind,andthetreethatbearethfruit,havingseedeachoneaccordingtoitskind.AndGodsawthatitwasgood.

    1:13.Andtheeveningandthemorningwerethethirdday.

    1:14.AndGodsaid:Lettherebelightsmadeinthefirmamentofheaven,todividethedayandthenight,andletthembeforsigns,andforseasons,andfordaysandyears:

    1:16.AndGodmadetwogreatlights:agreaterlighttoruletheday;andalesserlighttorulethenight:andThestars.

    Twogreat lights…Godcreatedon the first day, light,whichbeingmoved fromeast towest, by its rising and setting, made morning and evening. But on the fourth day heorderedanddistributedthislight,andmadethesun,moon,andstars.Themoon,thoughmuchlessthanthestars,isherecalledagreatlight,fromitsgivingafargreaterlighttotheearththananyofthem.

    1:17.Andhesettheminthefirmamentofheaventoshineupontheearth.

    1:18.Andtorulethedayandthenight,andtodividethelightandthedarkness.AndGodsawthatitwasgood.

    1:19.Andtheeveningandmorningwerethefourthday.

    1:20.Godalsosaid: let thewatersbring forth thecreepingcreaturehaving life,and thefowlthatmayflyovertheearthunderthefirmamentofheaven.

    1:21.AndGodcreatedthegreatwhales,andeverylivingandmovingcreature,whichthewaaters brought forth, according to their kinds, and everywinged fowl according to itskind.AndGodsawthatitwasgood.

    1:22.Andheblessedthem,saying:Increaseandmultiply,andfill thewatersof thesea:andletthebirdsbemultipliedupontheearth.

    1:23.Andtheeveningandmorningwerethefifthday.

    1:24.AndGod said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature in its kind, cattle andcreepingthings,andbeastsoftheearth,accordingtotheirkinds.Anditwassodone.

    1:25.AndGodmadethebeastsoftheearthaccordingtotheirkinds,andcattle,andeverythingthatcreepethontheearthafteritskind.AndGodsawthatitwasgood.

    1:26.Andhesaid:Letusmakemantoourimageandlikeness:andlethimhavedominionoverthefishesofthesea,andthefowlsoftheair,andthebeasts,andthewholeearth,andeverycreepingcreaturethatmovethupontheearth.

    Letusmakemantoourimage…ThisimageofGodinman,isnotinthebody,butinthesoul; which is a spiritual substance, endued with understanding and free will. Godspeakethhereinthepluralnumber,toinsinuatethepluralityofpersonsintheDeity.

    1:27.AndGodcreatedmantohisownimage:totheimageofGodhecreatedhim:maleandfemalehecreatedthem.

    1:28.AndGodblessedthem,saying:Increaseandmultiply,andfilltheearth,andsubdueit,andruleoverthefishesofthesea,andthefowlsoftheair,andalllivingcreaturesthatmoveupontheearth.

    Increase andmultiply…This is not a precept, as some Protestant controvertists wouldhave it,but ablessing, rendering themfruitful; forGodhad said the samewords to thefishes,andbirds,(ver.22)whowereincapableofreceivingaprecept.

  • 1:29.AndGodsaid:BeholdIhavegivenyoueveryherbbearingseedupontheearth,andalltreesthathaveinthemselvesseedoftheirownkind,tobeyourmeat:

    1:30.Andtoallbeastsoftheearth,andtoeveryfowloftheair,andtoallthatmoveupontheearth,andwhereinthereislife,thattheymayhavetofeedupon.Anditwassodone.

    1:31.AndGod sawall the things thathehadmade, and theywereverygood.And theeveningandmorningwerethesixthday.

    GenesisChapter2

    Godrestethontheseventhdayandblessethit.Theearthlyparadise,inwhichGodplacethman.Hecommandethhimnottoeatofthetreeofknowledge.Andformethawomanofhisrib.

    2:1.Sotheheavensandtheearthwerefinished,andallthefurnitureofthem.

    2:2.AndontheseventhdayGodendedhisworkwhichhehadmade:andherestedontheseventhdayfromallhisworkwhichhehaddone.

    Herested,etc…Thatis,heceasedtomakeorcreateanynewkindsofthings.Though,asour Lord tells us, John 5.17, “He still worketh”, viz., by conserving and governing allthings,andcreatingsouls.

    2:3.Andheblessedtheseventhday,andsanctifiedit:becauseinithehadrestedfromallhisworkwhichGodcreatedandmade.

    2:4.Thesearethegenerationsoftheheavenandtheearth,whentheywerecreated,inthedaythattheLordGodmadetheheavenandtheearth:

    2:5.Andeveryplantof the fieldbefore it sprungup in theearth,andeveryherbof thegroundbeforeitgrew:fortheLordGodhadnotrainedupontheearth;andtherewasnotamantotilltheearth.

    2:6.Butaspringroseoutoftheearth,wateringallthesurfaceoftheearth.

    2:7.AndtheLordGodformedmanoftheslimeoftheearth:andbreathedintohisfacethebreathoflife,andmanbecamealivingsoul.

    2:8.AndtheLordGodhadplantedaparadiseofpleasurefromthebeginning:whereinheplacedmanwhomhehadformed.

    2:9.AndtheLordGodbroughtforthofthegroundallmanneroftrees,fairtobehold,andpleasanttoeatof:thetreeoflifealsointhemidstofparadise:andthetreeofknowledgeofgoodandevil.

    Thetreeoflife…Socalledbecauseithadthatquality,thatbyeatingofthefruitofit,manwouldhavebeenpreservedinaconstantstateofhealth,vigour,andstrength,andwouldnot have died at all. The tree of knowledge… To which the deceitful serpent falselyattributed thepowerof impartingasuperiorkindofknowledge,beyondthatwhichGodwaspleasedtogive.

    2:10.Andariverwentoutoftheplaceofpleasuretowaterparadise,whichfromthenceisdividedintofourheads.

    2:11.ThenameoftheoneisPhison:thatisitwhichcompassethallthelandofHevilath,

    2:12.Andthegoldofthatlandisverygood:thereisfoundbdellium,andtheonyxstone.

    2:13.And thenameof thesecondriver isGehon: thesame is it thatcompassethall thelandofEthiopia.

    2:14.AndthenameofthethirdriverisTigris:thesamepassethalongbytheAssyrians.AndthefourthriverisEuphrates.

    2:15.AndtheLordGodtookman,andputhimintotheparadiseofpleasure,todressit,andtokeepit.

    2:16.Andhecommandedhim,saying:Ofeverytreeofparadisethoushalteat:

    2:17.Butof thetreeofknowledgeofgoodandevil, thoushaltnoteat.For inwhatdaysoeverthoushalteatofit,thoushaltdiethedeath.

    2:18.AndtheLordGodsaid:Itisnotgoodformantobealone:letusmakehimahelplikeuntohimself.

    2:19.AndtheLordGodhavingformedoutofthegroundallthebeastsoftheearth,andallthefowlsoftheair,broughtthemtoAdamtoseewhathewouldcallthem:forwhatsoeverAdamcalledanylivingcreaturethesameisitsname.

    2:20.AndAdamcalledallthebeastsbytheirnames,andallthefowlsoftheair,andallthecattleofthefield:butforAdamtherewasnotfoundahelperlikehimself.

    2:21.ThentheLordGodcastadeepsleepuponAdam:andwhenhewasfastasleep,hetookoneofhisribs,andfilledupfleshforit.

    2:22. And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: andbroughthertoAdam.

    2:23.AndAdamsaid:Thisnowisboneofmybones,andfleshofmyflesh;sheshallbecalledwoman,becauseshewastakenoutofman.

    2:24.Whereforeamanshallleavefatherandmother,andshallcleavetohiswife:andtheyshallbetwoinoneflesh.

    2:25.Andtheywerebothnaked:towit,Adamandhiswife:andwerenotashamed.

    GenesisChapter3

    The serpent’s craft. The fall of our first parents. Their punishment. The promise of aRedeemer.

    3:1.Nowtheserpentwasmoresubtle thaanyof thebeastsof theearthwhich theLordGod hadmade. And he said to the woman:Why hath God commanded you, that youshouldnoteatofeverytreeofparadise?

    3:2.Andthewomanansweredhim,saying:Ofthefruitofthetreesthatareinparadisewedoeat:

    3:3.Butofthefruitofthetreewhichisinthemidstofparadise,Godhathcommandedusthatweshouldnoteat;andthatweshouldnottouchit,lestperhapswedie.

  • 3:4.Andtheserpentsaidtothewoman:No,youshallnotdiethedeath.

    3:5.ForGoddothknowthatinwhatdaysoeveryoushalleatthereof,youreyesshallbeopened:andyoushallbeasGods,knowinggoodandevil.

    3:6.Andthewomansawthatthetreewasgoodtoeat,andfairtotheeyes,anddelightfultobehold:andshetookofthefruitthereof,anddideat,andgavetoherhusband,whodideat.

    3:7.Andtheeyesofthembothwereopened:andwhentheyperceivedthemselvestobenaked,theysewedtogetherfigleaves,andmadethemselvesaprons.

    Andtheeyes,etc…Notthattheywereblindbefore,(forthewomansawthatthetreewasfairtotheeyes,ver.6.)noryetthattheireyeswereopenedtoanymoreperfectknowledgeofgood;butonlytotheunhappyexperienceofhavinglostthegoodoforiginalgraceandinnocence,andincurredthedreadfulevilofsin.Fromwhencefollowedashameoftheirbeingnaked;which theymindednotbefore;becausebeingnowstriptoforiginalgrace,theyquicklybegantobesubjecttotheshamefulrebellionsoftheflesh.

    3:8.AndwhentheyheardthevoiceoftheLordGodwalkinginparadiseattheafternoonair,AdamandhiswifehidthemselvesfromthefaceoftheLordGod,amidstthetreesofparadise.

    3:9.AndtheLordGodcalledAdam,andsaidtohim:Whereartthou?

    3:10.Andhesaid:Iheardthyvoiceinparadise;andIwasafraid,becauseIwasnaked,andIhidmyself.

    3:11.Andhesaidtohim:Andwhohathtoldtheethatthouwastnaked,butthatthouhasteatenofthetreewhereofIcommandedtheethatthoushouldstnoteat?

    3:12.AndAdamsaid:Thewoman,whomthougavestmetobemycompanion,gavemeofthetree,andIdideat.

    3:13.AndtheLordGodsaidtothewoman:Whyhastthoudonethis?Andsheanswered:Theserpentdeceivedme,andIdideat.

    3:14.And theLordGodsaid to theserpent:Because thouhastdone this thing, thouartcursedamongallcattle,andbeastsoftheearth:uponthybreastshalt thougo,andearthshaltthoueatallthedaysofthylife.

    3:15.Iwillputenmitiesbetweentheeandthewoman,andthyseedandherseed:sheshallcurshthyhead,andthoushaltlieinwaitforherheel.

    Sheshallcrush…Ipsa,thewoman;sodiversofthefathersreadthisplace,conformablytotheLatin:othersreaditipsum,viz.,theseed.Thesenseisthesame:foritisbyherseed,JesusChrist,thatthewomancrushestheserpent’shead.

    3:16. To the woman also he said: I will multiply thy sorrows, and thy conceptions: insorrowshaltthoubringforthchildren,andthoushaltbeunderthyhusband’spower,andheshallhavedominionoverthee.

    3:17.AndtoAdamhesaid:Becausethouhasthearkenedtothevoiceofthywife,andhasteatenofthetree,whereofIcommandedthee,thatthoushouldstnoteat,cursedistheearthinthywork:withlabourandtoilshaltthoueatthereofallthedaysofthylife.

  • 3:18.Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat theherbsof theearth.

    3:19.Inthesweatofthyfaceshaltthoueatbreadtillthoureturntotheearthoutofwhichthouwasttaken:fordustthouart,andintodustthoushaltreturn.

    3:20.AndAdamcalledthenameofhiswifeEve:becauseshewasthemotherofalltheliving.

    3:21.AndtheLordGodmadeforAdamandhiswifegarmentsofskins,andclothedthem.

    3:22.Andhe said:BeholdAdam is becomeasoneofus, knowinggoodand evil: nowthereforelestperhapsheputforthhishandandtakealsoofthetreeoflife,andeat,andliveforever.

    Behold Adam, etc… This was spoken by way of reproaching him with his pride, inaffectingaknowledgethatmightmakehimliketoGod.

    3:23.And theLordGod sent himout of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth fromwhichhewastaken.

    3:24.AndhecastoutAdam:andplacedbeforetheparadiseofpleasureCherubims,andaflamingsword,turningeveryway,tokeepthewayofthetreeoflife.

    GenesisChapter4

    ThehistoryofCainandAbel.

    4:1.AndAdamknewEvehiswife;whoconceivedandbroughtforthCain,saying:IhavegottenamanthroughGod.

    4:2.AndagainshebroughtforthhisbrotherAbel.AndAbelwasashepherd,andCainahusbandman.

    4:3.Anditcametopassaftermanydays,thatCainoffered,ofthefruitsoftheearth,giftstotheLord.

    4:4. Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord hadrespecttoAbel,andtohisofferings.

    Hadrespect…Thatis,shewedhisacceptanceofhissacrifice(ascomingfromaheartfullof devotion): and that, aswemay suppose, by somevisible token, such as sending firefromheavenuponhisofferings.

    4:5.ButtoCainandhisofferingshehadnorespect:andCainwasexceedingangry,andhiscountenancefell.

    4:6.AndtheLordsaidtohim:Whyartthouangry?andwhyisthycountenancefallen?

    4:7.Ifthoudowell,shaltthounotreceive?butifill,shallnotsinforthwithbepresentatthedoor?butthelustthereofshallbeunderthee,andthoushalthavedominionoverit.

    4:8.AndCainsaidtoAbelhisbrother:Letusgoforthabroad.Andwhentheywereinthefield,CainroseupagainsthisbrotherAbel,andslewhim.

    4:9.AndtheLordsaidtoCain:WhereisthybrotherAbel?Andheanswered:Iknownot:amImybrother’skeeper?

  • 4:10.Andhesaidtohim:Whathastthoudone?thevoiceofthybrother’sbloodcriethtomefromtheearth.

    4:11.Nowthereforecursedshaltthoubeupontheearth,whichhathopenedhermouthandrecievedthebloodofthybrotheratthyhand.

    4:12.Whenthoushalttillit,itshallnotyieldtotheeitsfruit:afugitiveandavagabondshaltthoubeupontheearth.

    4:13.AndCainsaidtotheLord:MyiniquityisgreaterthanthatImaydeservepardon.

    15:2.AndAbramsaid:LordGod,whatwiltthougiveme?Ishallgowithoutchildren:andthesonofthestewardofmyhouseisthisDamascusEliezer.

    15:3.AndAbramadded:Buttomethouhastnotgivenseed:andlomyservantborninmyhouse,shallbemyheir.

    16:1. Now Sarai, the wife of Abram, had brought forth no children: but having ahandmaid,anEgyptian,namedAgar,

    17:2. And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply theeexceedingly.

    17:21.ButmycovenantIwillestablishwithIsaac,whomSarashallbringforthtotheeatthistimeinthenextyear.

    18:19.ForIknowthathewillcommandhischildren,andhishouseholdafterhim,tokeepthewayoftheLord,anddojudgmentandjustice:thatforAbraham’ssake,theLordmaybringtoeffectallthethingshehathspokenuntohim.

    18:20.AndtheLordsaid:ThecryofSodomandGomorrhaismultiplied,andtheirsinisbecomeexceedinglygrievous.

    18:21.Iwillgodownandseewhethertheyhavedoneaccordingtothecrythatiscometome;orwhetheritbenotso,thatImayknow.

    18:24. If there be fifty justmen in the city, shall they perishwithal? andwilt thou notsparethatplaceforthesakeofthefiftyjust,iftheybetherein?

    19:20.Thereisthiscityhereathand,towhichImayflee,itisalittleone,andIshallbesavedinit:isitnotalittleone,andmysoulshalllive?

    23:14.AndEphronanswered:

    23:15.Mylord,hearme.Thegroundwhichthoudesirest,isworthfourhundredsiclesofsilver:thisisthepricebetweenmeandthee:butwhatisthis?burythydead.

    23:16.AndwhenAbrahamhad heard this, heweighed out themoney thatEphron hadasked, in the hearing of the children ofHeth, four hundred sicles of silver, of commoncurrentmoney.

    23:17. And the field that before was Ephron’s, wherein was the double cave, lookingtowardsMambre, both it and the cave, and all the trees thereof, in all its limits roundabout,

    23:18.WasmadesuretoAbrahamforapossession,inthesightofthechildrenofHeth,andofallthatwentinatthegateofhiscity.

    24:6.AndAbrahamsaid:Bewarethouneverbringmysonbackagainthither.

    24:7. TheLordGod of heaven,who tookme out ofmy father’s house, and out ofmynativecountry,who spoke tome, and swore tome, saying:To thy seedwill I give thisland:hewillsendhisangelbeforethee,andthoushalttakefromthenceawifeformyson.

    Hewillsendhisangelbeforethee…ThisshowsthattheHebrewsbelievedthatGodgavethemguardianangelsfortheirprotection.

    24:8.But if thewomanwill not follow thee, thou shalt not beboundby theoath: onlybringnotmysonbackthitheragain.

    24:9.Theservant,therefore,puthishandunderthethighofAbraham,hislord,andsworetohimuponhisword.

    24:10.Andhetooktencamelsofhismaster’sherd,anddeparted,carryingsomethingofall his goodswithhim, andhe set forward andwent on toMesopotamia, to the cityofNachor.

    24:11.Andwhenhehadmadethecamelsliedownwithoutthetown,nearawellofwater,intheevening,atthetimewhenwomenarewonttocomeouttodrawwater,hesaid:

    24:12.OLord,theGodofmymaster,Abraham,meetmetoday,Ibeseechthee,andshewkindnesstomymaster,Abraham.

    24:13.Behold,Istandnighthespringofwater,andthedaughtersoftheinhabitantsofthiscitywillcomeouttodrawwater:

    24:14.Now, therefore, themaid towhom I shall say: Let down thy pitcher that Imaydrink:andsheshallanswer,Drink,andIwillgivethycamelsdrinkalso:letitbethesamewhomthouhastprovidedfor thyservant Isaac:andby this, Ishallunderstand that thouhastshewnkindnesstomymaster.

    24:15.Hehadnotyetendedthesewordswithinhimself,andbeholdRebeccacameout,thedaughterofBathuel,sonofMelcha,wifetoNachorthebrotherofAbraham,havingapitcheronhershoulder:

    24:16.Anexceedingcomelymaid, andamostbeautifulvirgin, andnotknown toman:andshewentdowntothespring,andfilledherpitcher,andwascomingback.

    24:17.And the servant ran tomeether, andsaid:Givemea littlewater todrinkof thypitcher.

    24:18.Andsheanswered:Drink,mylord.Andquicklysheletdownthepitcheruponherarm,andgavehimdrink.

    24:19.Andwhenhehaddrunk,shesaid:Iwilldrawwaterforthycamelsalso,tilltheyalldrink.

  • 24:20. And pouring out the pitcher into the troughs, she ran back to the well to drawwater;andhavingdrawn,shegavetoallthecamels.

    24:21.But hemusing, beheld herwith silence, desirous to knowwhether theLord hadmadehisjourneyprosperousornot.

    24:22.Andafter that thecamelshaddrunk, themantookoutgoldenearrings,weighingtwosicles;andasmanybracelets,oftensiclesweight.

    24:23.And he said to her:Whose daughter art thou? tellme: is there any place in thyfather’shousetolodge?

    24:24.And she answered: I am the daughter ofBathuel, the son ofMelcha,whom sheboretoNachor.

    24:25.Andshesaid,moreover,tohim:Wehavegoodstoreofbothstrawandhay,andalargeplacetolodgein.

    24:26.Themanbowedhimselfdown,andadoredtheLord,

    24:27.Saying:BlessedbetheLordGodofmymasterAbraham,whohathnottakenawayhismercyandtruthfrommymaster,andhathbroughtmethestraightwayintothehouseofmymaster’sbrother.

    24:28.Thenthemaidran,andtoldinhermother’shouseallthatshehadheard.

    24:29.AndRebeccahadabrother,namedLaban,whowentoutinhastetotheman,tothewell.

    24:30. Andwhen he had seen the earrings and bracelets in his sister’s hands, and hadheardallthatsherelated,saying,Thusandthusthemanspoketome:hecametothemanwhostoodbythecamels,andneartothespringofwater,

    24:31.Andsaidtohim:Comein,thoublessedoftheLord;whystandestthouwithout?Ihavepreparedthehouse,andaplaceforthecamels.

    24:32.And he brought him into his lodging; and he unharnessed the camels, and gavestrawandhay,andwater towashhis feet,and the feetof themen thatwerecomewithhim.

    24:33.Andbreadwassetbeforehim.Buthesaid:Iwillnoteat,tillItellmymessage.Heansweredhim:Speak.

    24:34.Andhesaid:IamtheservantofAbraham:

    24:35.AndtheLordhathblessedmymasterwonderfully,andheisbecomegreat:andhehathgivenhimsheepandoxen,silverandgold,menservantsandwomenservants,camelsandasses.

    24:36.AndSara,mymaster’swife,hathbornemymasterasoninheroldage,andhehathgivenhimallthathehad.

    24:37.Andmymastermademeswear,saying:ThoushaltnottakeawifeformysonoftheChanaanites,inwhoselandIdwell:
