Looking for some fun, new games to reinforce math concepts. Read below for several engaging strategies.
o Trashketball- This game can be played with a team or individually shooting paper wads into a trashcan for points after solving math problems.
o Grudgeball - Grudgeball is a twist on Jeopardy. Basically, students can steal points from other teams in order to win. The nice twist on this game is that the team with the “smart” kids isn’t always going to win!
o Kahoot! - Kahoot! is a review game where kids race against each other to answer multiple choice questions. It’s super fun, but I wouldn’t recommend it for classes with a wide variety of ability levels.
o Hot Seat - In this game, students sit in rows and the first person in each row is in the "hot seat". The person in the hot seat has the opportunity to earn the most points for their te
o Beach Ball Toss- Draw lines on a beach ball to divide it into many different segments. Write a number in each segment. Have students toss the ball to each other. When a student catches the ball, she should look at the numbers that are under each of her thumbs. Those are the two numbers that she needs to add together (or multiply together, or find the common denominator for) in order to toss the ball to the next student.

Reading Strategy #15: Alternative Perspective Writing
1. Prepare the lesson: pair students, have students
bring a sheet of paper
2. Introduce text and explain annotation: read text
and underline important facts and details
3. Give coding instructions: Identify different
parts/roles within the text
4. Define the genre and start kids writing: Tell
students which perspective you would like them to
write from and what their writing task is. Allow 5-7
minutes
5. Monitor: Help students who need assistance
6. Pairs trade and write back in new role: Give
students a new role and have them read their
partner’s writing from that perspective. Still in their
new role, they should respond to their partner.
Allow 5-7 minutes
7. Read responses and share with the class: Partners
trade papers again, read the responses, and decide
which of the two letters they like better

Dear Teachers and Administrators,
Friends of the Rivers (FOR)–a local grass roots, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the vitalityand engagement of the St. Mary’s, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers–is excited to share our latest initiative—providing canal boat rides and educational experiences in our brand new canal boat fashioned after anauthentic 1840’s craft!
N A M E T H E F O R C A N A L B O A T
Friends of the Rivers is asking Allen County teachers and their students to help in selecting three final name options for the new canal boat. Here’s how you can participate:
• Share the canal boat ballot of suggested names (attached) with students/grade levels you choose to participate in the naming activity. • Students should vote on their favorite name from the list we’ve offered, or write in an option, if your school thinks of a name that would be suitable, or fun. The challenge: Each school/building may only offer one name option to Friends of the Rivers, so you’ll have to narrow your recommendation to only one favorite. • Send your final recommendation no later than Wednesday, April 12, 2017, to FOR Board Member, Nancy Stewart at: [email protected]. (Please be sure to indicate the name of your school, the grade levels that participated, and approximately how many students voted.) • Friends of the Rivers will feature the top three names offered by students on our website: forfw.com beginning Earth Day, April 22. The Fort Wayne community will then be asked to vote on the three options to determine a finalist. You, your students, and their families are invited to vote, as well.
• On May 10, web voting will end and the name of Friends of the Rivers canal boat will be announced. Please visit the website to see if the name your students offered was chosen for Fort Wayne’s first canal boat since 1874!

• The Wabash & Erie Canal traveled 497 miles from Toledo, Ohio on Lake Erie to Evansville, Indiana, right through Fort Wayne cutting a portage (route) between the Maumee River and the Wabash River.
• Fort Wayne was the highest point on the canal (i.e. the summit), so Fort Wayne earned the name"Summit City."
• Canal boats carried people and goods on our rivers and canals from 1843-1874 which was much faster than burdensome wagons.
• Draft animals, usually mules, pulled long, narrow canal boats by a rope on a path next to the canal, called a towpath.
• Historically, boats and ships are called “she.” One source suggests that a ship or boat "was nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone except his or her mother." What better reason to call a ship "she"?

Sweet Breeze
Sweet Breeze (Wanagapeth) was the eldest daughter of the chief of the Miami people, Little Turtle–one of the most famous Native American military leaders of his time. Sweet Breeze married Capt. William Wells, an Indian agent and soldier instrumental in the development of Fort Wayne’s history. Sweet Breeze and William Wells had four children.
Johnny Boat
In the late 19th century flat-bottom boats, called “Johnny Boats” were popular and were ideal for traversing shallow waters. Johnny Appleseed, an American pioneer and nurseryman, was alleged to have planted apple trees along the Erie Canal towpaths. He became an American legend while still alive, due to his kind, generous ways, his leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance he attributed to apples.
Kekionga
Kekionga, means blackberry bush, in the language of Miami Indians. Kekionga was the capital of the Miami Native American tribe, located at the confluence of the Saint Joseph, Saint Mary’s and Maumee Rivers on the western edge of the Great Black Swamp (a glacially fed wetland) now known as Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John Brown
The John Brown Stone Warehouse, also known as The Canal House, is the only building still standing in Fort Wayne that was here during the days that the canal was in operation–which makes it the oldest structure in the city. The warehouse was constructed in 1852 (22 x 50 ft.) by John Brown who used salvage and "waste" materials from his business as a stone merchant and mason.
Big Chief
Write-In Suggestion:
The Friends of the Rivers canal boat is a hefty 54 feet long and can carry 40 people. This 19th century replica canal boat will be a unique interactive and educational opportunity for riders and visitors. Touring on the “Big Chief” will provide an opportunity to familiarize riders with some of Indiana’s most important and influential Native American leaders.
Thank You for Voting!
• Visit the FOR website beginning Earth Day, April 22 and vote among the canal boat final names. Ask your family and friends to vote too!• On May 10, web voting will end and the name of Friends of the Rivers canal boat will be announced. • Please visit the website to see if the name your school suggested was chosen for Fort Wayne’s first canal boat since 1874!

Rules:
You may use any theme to decorate the canvas.
You must incorporate puzzle pieces in the design; It doesn’t matter how many or what
size pieces you use.
You may glue items, paint, decoupage… Etc.
Staff members should assist the students in the design and implementation of the
canvases but keep in mind, we want this to be something the students are making.
Completed canvases must be turned into Jennifer Hartman at Park Hill by Thursday April 13th
along with the submission form.
For those interested in completing a project, contact Jennifer Hartman or your building special
education teacher to request a canvas. A submission form will be emailed to you and must be

Francine's Friends Mobile Mammography Unit is returning to EACS. This is a wonderful and convenient service offered to EACS and to our community by Parkview Hospital and the Breast Diagnostic Center. Parkview recommends women have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40. Women 35 and older, who are not experiencing any problems with their breasts, can get a screening mammogram on the coach. All participants must have a family physician as the screening report is sent to the physician. For participants that have insurance, their insurance company will be billed. For those that have EACS Group Health Insurance, Mammograms will be considered as a wellness benefit, covered at 100%. Please bring a photo ID and your insurance card. NO ONE will be turned away for inability to pay. Francine’s Friends has funding available and a donation toward the cost of the mammogram is welcome. 2017 screening schedule:
