Every day, operatives in manufacturing and industrial environments are exposed to hazards that can lead to injury. Employers have a legal obligation and duty of care to ensure that their employees are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them against all health and safety risks. Q-Safe provides a complete “head to toe” solution to the health and safety and PPE needs of employees working in any manufacturing or industrial environment.
Increasingly health and safety and purchasing managers have to reconcile their organisations’ legislative and duty of care responsibilities with the need to achieve cost savings. This has been made doubly challenging in recent years because of signifi cant increases in direct costs of raw materials and energy - which has placed a greater focus on reducing indirect costs.
The Q-Safe range provides a proven and effective solution for customers who need to reduce their overall purchasing costs without compromising on safety, by focusing on providing practical, safe and affordable products that comply with all relevant and current European legislative requirements. Q-Safe products offer real value for money.
Available exclusively through Brammer - Europe’s leading supplier of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) products and services, Q-Safe enables you to reduce your overall purchasing costs without compromising on safety.

CHOOSE YOUR PROTECTION ACCORDING TO THE INTENDED EXPOSURE LEVEL
You must reduce your exposure to noise below a threshold of 80dB.**1st level of action defi ned by European Directive 2003/10/CE for an exposure period of 8 hours.
SNR represents the theoretical attenuation level provided by your equipment. The higher the SNR, the more protected you will be.
E.g. If you are exposed to a noise level of 110dB (use of portable electric tools), SNR protection of a minimum of 30dB is required.110 dB - 30 dB = 80 dB
It is absolutely imperative to check the attenuation level with the SNR value indicated on the packaging.
EUROPEAN STANDARDS
From 80 dB, it is recommended to wear hearing protection(compulsory from 85 dB)
HEARING PROTECTION, EARMUFFS OR EARPLUGS?
Earmuffs and earplugs can offer the same level of protection.
Earplugs are economical, discreet, and can be easily tucked into a pocket. Disposable or reusable, with or without a cord, it is up to you to choose.
Earmuffs are sturdy and can be easily put in place.
The proper positioning of your protection is absolutely imperative. It must be worn 100% of exposure time.

n Complying with the PPE Directive: 89/686/EEC
The Directive specifi es two classes of glove meeting two levels of risk:‘minimal’, and ‘mortal’ or ‘irreversible’ risk. A risk which falls between these two levels may be described as ‘intermediate’. To comply with the 89/656/EEC Directive, you must establish the level of risk and select gloves of the appropriate class.
A system of marking has been developed to help you in that selection.
Please note that the original PPE Directive 89/686/EEC has been amended by both the 93/95/EECDirective and the CE marking Directives 93/68/EEC and 95/58 EEC.
Category I: Gloves of simple design- For minimal risk onlyFor gloves of simple design offering protection from low level risks, e.g. janitorial gloves, manufacturers are permitted to test and certify gloves themselves.
Category II: Gloves of intermediate design- For intermediate riskGloves designed to protect against intermediate risk (e.g. general handling gloves requiring good cut, puncture and abrasion performance) must be subjected to independent testing and certifi cation by a notifi ed body. Only these approved bodies may issue a CE mark, without which the gloves may not be sold. Each notifi ed body has its own identifi cation number. The name and address of the notifi ed body that certifi es the product has to appear on the instructions for use that will accompany the gloves.
Category III: Gloves of complex design- For irreversible or mortal riskGloves designed to protect against the highest levels of risk, e.g. chemicals, must also be tested and certifi ed by a notifi ed body. In addition, the quality assurance system used by the manufacturer to guarantee homogeneity of production or the quality consistency testing of the fi nal product must be independently checked. The body carrying out this evaluation will be identifi ed by a number which must appear alongside the CE mark (in this case, 0493).
STANDARD EN 388: 2003Gloves giving protection from mechanical risks
SCOPEThis standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, blade cut, puncture and tearing.
DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTSProtection against mechanical hazards is expressed by a pictogram followed by four numbers (performance levels), each representing test performance against a specifi c hazard.
The ‘mechanical risks’ pictogram is accompanied by a 4-digit code.

TEST PERFORMANCE LEVEL RATING
STANDARD EN 374: 2003Gloves giving protection from chemicals and micro-organisms
SCOPEThis standard specifi es the capability of gloves to protect the user against chemicals and/or microorganisms.
DEFINITIONSPenetrationPenetration is the movement of a chemical and/or micro-organism through porous materials, seams, pinholes or other imperfections in a protective glove material at a non-molecular level.
PermeationThe rubber and plastic fi lms in gloves do not always act as barriers to liquids. Sometimes they can act as sponges, soaking up the liquids and holding them against the skin. It is therefore necessary to measure breakthrough times, or the time taken for the hazardous liquid to come in contact with the skin.
REQUIREMENTSThe minimum liquid-proof section of the glove shall be at least equal to the minimum length of the gloves specifi ed in EN 420.
Penetration: A glove shall not leak when tested with an air and water leak test, and shall be tested and inspected in compliance with the acceptable quality level.

STANDARD EN 511: 2006Gloves giving protection from cold
SCOPEThis standard applies to any gloves to protect the hands against convective and contact cold down to –50 °C.
DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTSProtection against cold is expressed by a pictogram followed by a series of 3 performance levels, relating to specifi c protective qualities.
Gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear.
All gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear.
The ‘heat and fl ame’ pictogram is accompanied by a 6-digit number:a. Resistance to fl ammability (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the length of time the material continues to burn and glow after the source of ignition is removed. The seams of the glove shall not come apart after an ignition time of 15 seconds.
b. Contact heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the temperature range (100-500 °C) at which the user will feel no pain for at least 15 seconds. If an EN level 3 or higher is obtained, the product shall record at least EN level 3 in the fl ammability test. Otherwise, the maximum contact heat level shall be reported as level 2.
c. Convective heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat from a fl ame. A level of performance shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the fl ammability test.
d. Radiant heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat when exposed to a radiant heat source. A performance level shall only be men-tioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the fl ammability test.
e. Resistance to small splashes of molten metal (performance level 0 - 4)The number of molten metal drops required to heat the glove sample to a given level. A performance level shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the fl ammability test.
f. Resistance to large quantities of molten metal (performance level 0 - 4)The weight of molten metal required to cause smoothing or pinholing across a simulated skin placed directly behind the glove sample. The test is failed if metal droplets remain stuck to the glove material or if the specimen ignites.
The ‘cold hazard’ pictogram is accompanied by a 3-digit number :a. Resistance to convective cold (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the thermal insulation properties of the glove which are obtained by measuring the transfer of cold via convection.
b. Resistance to contact cold (performance level 0 - 4)Based on the thermal resistance of the glove material when exposed to contact with a cold object.
c. Penetration by water (0 or 1)0 = water penetration1 = no water penetration.

Gloves giving protection from radioactive contamination and ionising radiation
SCOPEThis standard applies to gloves to protect from ionising radiation and radioactive contamination
DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTSThe nature of protection is shown by a pictogram relating to the specifi c protective qualities.
For gloves used in containment enclosures, the glove shall pass in addition a specifi c air pressure leak test.
Materials may be modelled by their behaviour to ozone cracking. This test is optional and can be used as an aid to selecting gloves.
To protect from radioactive contamination, the glove has to be liquid proof and needs to pass the penetration test defi ned in EN 374.
To protect from ionising radiation, the glove has to contain a certain amount of lead or equivalent metal, quoted as lead equivalence. This lead equivalence must be marked on each glove.
