Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Mike Ordnung
Head Golf Coach
Mike Ordnung has been selected and tasked with the implementa-
tion and the development of the institution’s first women’s golf
team while serving as head coach of the men's team. This is his
first year with the Hawks. He noted, “I am thrilled to have been
selected to begin the women’s golf program at Chowan. It is un-
doubtedly an outstanding opportunity to build history and impact
the lives of student-athletes.”
Vice President/Director of Athletics Ozzie McFarland noted, “I
believe Mike is the perfect person to lead our entry into women’s
golf. His playing background, his knowledge of our area and in
particular, of Chowan Universit,y along with his golf connections
make him an excellent choice for this position”.
Ordnung is currently the general manager of Valley Pine Country
Club in Lasker, NC and has held the position since 2006. There,
he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the
facility, inventory control, conducting private golf lessons, clinics
and tournaments while supervising the staff. Additionally, he gen-
erates revenue and expands sales by initiating and monitoring the
effectiveness of monthly promotions, maintains and expands the
country club’s membership base and making responsible manage-
ment decisions.
Prior to working at Valley Pine, Ordnung was the Head Golf Pro-
fessional at Club Corp: The Currituck Club for four years. He de-
veloped and oversaw the club’s 3.2 million dollar budget through
financial forecasts, revenue game plans and inventory control. He
was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Pro Shop, the
15-member golf operations staff and conducted lessons, clinics
and tournaments.
The Jackson, NC native is a 2002 graduate of Campbell University
where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Admin-
istration. He is the son of current men’s golf coach and outdoor
facilities manager Ellen Ordnung. He has a wife, Laurie, and son,
Preston.
GO HAWKS
Ellen Ordnung enters her 13th year with Chowan University, and
her first as the Assistant Men's and Women's Golf Coach. She
has served the athletic department in a variety of roles over her 13
years with the institution and will assist with outdoor field mainte-
nance and game day operations in addition to working with the
golf teams. She served as the assistant softball coach for eight sea-
sons under Meredith Long, helping solidify a very successful pro-
gram at Chowan. She assists the department with outdoor facility
maintenance and with game day operations.
Ordnung led the 2013 golf squad to a best-ever finish at the CIAA
Championships where the Hawks finished runner-up. The Hawks
took home first place at the Valley Pine Invitational that same sea-
son. Under Ordnungs’ leadership, Sean Wilson received an invita-
tion to compete at the 2013 PGA Minority Golf Championship.
In 2012, Ordnung led her golf squad to a third place finish at the
CIAA Championships. Senior Cliff Forbes was named to the
NCAA DII Atlantic/East Regional Team where he finished 40th
out of a 108 player field. Forbes also won the 2012 CIAA Individ-
ual Conference Championship Title.
In her first season competing in the CIAA (2010), Ordnung led a
talented young golf team to a third place overall finish at the
CIAA Championships. Both Cliff Forbes and Corey Garvey were
named All-CIAA performers that season.
Ordnung oversees all work study for the athletic department while
also serving as the ground supervisor for outdoor facilities. She is
an avid golfer, giving lessons and teaching golf classes at the
school for the past nine years. Her family owns a local golf course,
Valley Pine Country Club.
For over 30 years, Ordnung served as a teacher and coach for
Northampton County-East High School. During her tenure she
coached women’s basketball, softball, track and field, golf, and
cross country. She is a native of Williamston, NC, and resides in
Conway, NC with her husband Bob. Together they have two sons,
Mike and Danny. They are proud grandparents to Bryant Preston
Ordnung, who recently turned four years old.

Chowan University stands in the
old Albemarle region of North
Carolina between the Roanoke and
Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner
of the state. The Murfreesboro area
was first settled during the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries, when the
principal inhabitants were several
Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.
Today, the stately old homes seem to
whisper of the storied colonial and
antebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately
60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120
miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,
discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,
and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,
the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours
and special events are offered
throughout the year by local groups.
