Swansea and Carmarthen Campuses
An art school experience in a contemporary university
2 3
Foreword
As the new Dean of Art and Design at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) I have inherited a rich legacy of excellence in Art & Design education built up over many years by my predecessor Prof. Andrea Liggins and her team of outstanding academics on both the Swansea and Carmarthen campuses.
I am delighted to present this small ‘snap-shot’ of the amazingly diverse body of work produced by this year’s graduates. Being the oldest art school in Wales means that the Faculty of Art and Design at UWTSD has seen many changes over the past 160 years. The recent merger of Swansea Metropolitan University with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has established a new University with an amazing pedigree dating back back to 1822.
The Faculty has expanded its portfolio this year by welcoming the Schools of Industrial Design, Glass and Digital Media into an expanded Art & Design family which includes the Schools of Visual Communication, Fine Art, Photography and Film, andApplied Arts & Arts Practice.
Later this year the Faculty’s status will be further enhanced with the opening of the ALEX Design Exchange, the Grade II listed former Central Library in Swansea, following a £12 million redevelopment.
This summer’s exhibition season is more than just a collection of exhibitions it is a celebration of a journey or rather hundreds of journeys. This ‘Graduate Exhibitions Guide’ allows us to peer through the Faculty’s creative windows to witness an affirmation of the exuberance expressed by graduates from a wide range of disciplines who have combined the highest standards of knowledge and skill to create works of outstanding artistry and design. The work of each graduate is very different yet they are interwoven to create a rich commonwealth of creativity.
Each project on display represents the culmination of countless hours of hard work by the graduates themselves and the dedicated tutors who have supported and guided them over three years.
I hope you enjoy this showcase of some of the best Art & Design talent in the UK. If this has sparked your interest then why not contact us today to discuss your future at one of the UK’s top colleges of art.
Dr Ian WalshDean of Art & Design UWTSD

Yn Ddeon Celf a Dylunio newydd Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant (PCYDDS) rwyf wedi etifeddu treftadaeth gyfoethog o ragoriaeth mewn addysg Celf a Dylunio a adeiladwyd dros lawer o flynyddoedd gan fy rhagflaenydd, yr Athro Andrea Liggins, a’i thîm o academyddion eithriadol, ar gampysau Abertawe a Chaerfyrddin.
Mae’n bleser gennyf gyflwyno’r ‘ciplun’ bach hwn o’r corff anhygoel o amrywiol o waith a gynhyrchwyd gan raddedigion y flwyddyn yma. Mae bod yn ysgol gelf hynaf Cymru yn golygu bod y Gyfadran Celf a Dylunio yn PCYDDS wedi tystio llawer o newidiadau dros y 160 o flynyddoedd diwethaf. Mae uniad diweddar Prifysgol Fetropolitan Abertawe a Phrifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant wedi sefydlu Prifysgol newydd a chanddi hanes anhygoel sy’n dyddio’n ôl i 1822.
Eleni, mae’r Gyfadran wedi ymestyn ei phortffolio trwy groesawu’r Ysgol Dylunio Diwydiannol, yr Ysgol Wydr ac Ysgol y Cyfryngau Digidol i’r teulu Celf a Dylunio estynedig sy’n cynnwys yr Ysgolion Cyfathrebu Gweledol, Celf Gain, Ffotograffiaeth a Ffilm, a’r Celfyddydau Cymhwysol a Chelf Ymarferol.
Yn ddiweddarach y flwyddyn hon, bydd statws y Gyfadran yn cael ei chyfoethogi ymhellach gydag
agoriad Cyfnewidfa Ddylunio ALEX, hen Lyfrgell Ganolog Abertawe sy’n adeilad rhestredig Gradd II, yn dilyn ailddatblygiad gwerth £12 miliwn.
Mae tymor arddangos yr haf yma’n fwy na dim ond casgliad o arddangosfeydd, mae’n ddathliad o daith, neu gannoedd o deithiau hyd yn oed. Mae’r ‘Canllaw Arddangosiadau Graddedigion’ hwn yn ein galluogi i edrych trwy ffenestri creadigol y Gyfadran ar yr hyn sy’n cadarnhau afiaith y graddedigion, sy’n dod o ystod eang o ddisgyblaethau, ac sydd wedi cyfuno’r safonau uchaf o wybodaeth a sgil i greu darnau o gelfyddydwaith a dylunio syfrdanol. Mae gwaith pob myfyriwr yn wahanol iawn, ond eto cânt eu cydblethu i greu cyfanwaith o greadigrwydd.
Mae pob prosiect sy’n cael ei arddangos yn cynrychioli uchafbwynt oriau di-rif o waith caled gan y graddedigion eu hunain a’r tiwtoriaid ymroddedig sydd wedi’u cefnogi a’u harwain dros dair blynedd.
Rwy’n gobeithio y byddwch chi’n mwynhau’r arddangosfa hon o rai o raddedigion Celf a Dylunio mwyaf talentog y DU. Os yw’n tanio’ch diddordeb, cysylltwch â ni heddiw i drafod eich dyfodol yn un o golegau celf gorau’r DU.

Tom Gibbs, Graduate
Our Digital Film and Television Production programmes at UWTSD Swansea are structured in an innovative and flexible way that provides our students with the opportunity to explore this contemporary media within many aspects of filmmaking. Our aim is to produce graduates that take initiative. Whether they choose a commercial or independent route, students are encouraged to develop their own personal creative direction.
Our new ‘state of the art’ facilities allow sustained engagement, enabling our students to gain the confidence to express ideas through digital film. Students are continuously encouraged to explore and learn the entire processes from production, editing and camera work, to sound recording.

The Fine Art team is pleased to introduce the 2014 degree show, which is the culmination of much hard work, planning and anticipation, by the graduating students. This is their chance to showcase their work at a pivotal moment between university and the professional world. Throughout the student’s time at UWTSD Swansea, their studios have been lively places with animated discussions about the creative process and the relationship between idea and image. No medium or method is excluded – we encourage students to consider which material, object or site is most pertinent for their thoughts from sculptural fabrication to painting and drawing, to video, performance, and installation.
There is no hierarchy of medium and a flexibility of approach is paramount. The range of work shown here reflects this philosophy, with a myriad of accents and themes within the context of the ever expanding and shifting language of contemporary arts practice.
‘The Fine Art course provides students with the opportunity to grow creatively within a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. During my three years on the course I have been encouraged to push boundaries in order to find the best possible way to express my thoughts and ideas. We have a wide variety of workshops available where we have the opportunity to explore different media’

n) Fine Art: Contemporary Practice,
based on the Carmarthen campus, is a degree in which the students are challenged to explore diverse materials and mediums within the fine art context. The students are encouraged and taught to hone their skills to develop an innovative and individualistic, creative approach to studio based art practice.
The exhibition is the culmination of three years exploration of fine art visual intelligence. The 2014 degree show demonstrates the vibrant and diverse professional art practice undertaken by the students.
“Coming back to University to study Fine Art as a mature student was a risky move but it has worked out really well. I have found my creative home!”

The course has had another successful year, with students gaining places on undergraduate courses within our own Faculty and the wider University, and at other leading universities across the UK - or considering alternative career and employment possibilities.
The Foundation year encourages creativity through experimentation, broadens students’ contextual knowledge of art and design, provides practical skills and develops their abilities in orderly decision-making and thoughtful assessment.

The exhibition is held at the National Waterfront Museum Swansea. The past few years the exhibition has built up in reputation, with people coming some distance to view the work. The area where the exhibition is held has now become a dedicated Glass exhibition space. The exhibition is designed organised by the students, every year the show demonstrates the talent and diversity of how our students apply glass to an architectural environment.
The work ranges from the traditional stained glass to contemporary glass practice, drawing on a range of techniques that explore light, material and space.

Graphic Design effectively and creatively integrates and manipulates words and imagery to inform, persuade and provoke responses in a huge variety of areas within the wider visual arena (e.g. books, posters, magazines, packaging, websites).
The programme is concerned with the use of graphic design in publicity, advertising, information design and visual communications in general. Designing for both print and web are central to our studies.
This exhibition demonstrates the wide variety of approaches that are available to the graphic designer in a challenging and innovative way.
“I have no doubt in my mind, that UWTSD-Swansea helped me achieve my full potential as a Graphic Designer. The theory taught broadened my understanding of design. The work pushed my creativity in new, interesting ways. While the lecturers were both encouraging and insightful, going above and beyond to help when needed. If you’re considering a career in Graphic Design, I can recommend no where better.”

Illustration is a dynamic and expansive visual language. Long celebrated as being a skill-based commercial discipline with areas such as book publishing, editorial and advertising in mind, recently illustration has expanded far more towards personal authorship, public realm, illustrative journalism and time-based, motion illustration.
The BA(Hons) General Illustration course encourages its students to challenge the concept of what illustration can be, and to pursue personal directions in their work. In the spirit of this growing artform, this year’s graduate exhibition promises to showcase just that, with some truly original works in both established and innovative pathways in illustration.

n Industrial Design is a creative activity whose aim is to produce the products, services or systems that we interact with every moment of our lives. Industrial designers are the individuals who make sense of our problems; they identify new ways of doing things, creating new possibilities in the form of tangible objects that enable us to live our lives the way we would like. From kettles to cars, from bottles to boats, the Industrial Designer’s role is to make the manufactured world around us fit – fit our bodies, fit our needs and fit our aspirations for the future!
The School of Industrial Design would like to welcome you to our SMUDGE 2014 Exhibition.
The exhibition contains the final major project work of students studying Automotive Design and Product Design. The work, as always, is diverse encompassing a range of product and vehicle designs – some are conceptual proposals and some are practical solutions but all are the culmination of creativity, pragmatism and sheer determination.
The students have worked hard to get to this point, and this is just the beginning for them…
We can’t wait to see what they do next!
“The Product Design course has provided me with a wealth of experience which has helped me develop a wide range of skills which I have applied within my practice as well as in life in general. The tutors here are excellent and have an open door policy, which means that they are always around for help or just a chat. This course has challenged and excited me from the 1st year right through to the 3rd year. Everyone involved within the course including tutors, technicians and peers are really friendly and are always willing to lend a hand and support you. The studio becomes a second home and the people, like family.”

concerned with exploration, self-discovery and innovation through the medium of photography. Photojournalism enables students to undertake an intensive study of the relationship of image and text, the theory and practice of social documentation and practical reportage using the medium of photography.
The first offer I got after graduating was to be a part of an exhibition at Ffotogallery in Cardiff, showcasing emerging artists in Wales. During my studies at UWTSD Swansea, I met a lot of good friends and as a group of students we helped each other out through critical discussions about our work. I am currently a second year MA student at the University of Gothenburg, but I still have contact with many of my Swansea friends professionally, as we have collaborative projects running and have exhibited together since university.

Our courses focus on concepts and issues, which are realised through a variety of innovative approaches and materials. Our multi – disciplinary programme provides the framework for students to develop dynamic and innovative ideas. The central philosophy is to foster, yet challenge the creativity of those who are well motivated and versatile and who will enjoy experimenting with a range of materials.
The Exhibition
We are pleased to offer yet another diverse and stimulating exhibition from the Surface Pattern Design final year students. The exhibition offers a highly imaginative and creative response from the three pathways of the course; Contemporary Applied Arts Practice, Textiles for Fashion and Textiles for Interiors. The show includes a wide and challenging use of materials, concepts and approaches, resulting in a sumptuous exhibition for 2014!

) This is our largest ever exhibition of student work. An engaging, stimulating and questioning environment created by graduates across our four pathways: Fine Art, Textiles, Visual Communication and Photography.
This richly layered show embodies the experimental practice and interdisciplinary engagement that is woven into the culture of our Contemporary Dialogues programme. Students across the pathways have shared lectures, workshops, dialogues and seminars and out of this have produced work that focuses on materiality, process, non-materiality and performance.
A multitude of themes including the relic, relationality, the archive, the gift, gender, the sublime, memory and the journey are represented, all arrived at through engagement with materials, media and discourse within and across boundaries. A reminder to us all of the potential of proper dialogue: new knowledge, new thinking and new ways of being an artist, designer or maker.

Mae’r cwrs hwn yn cynnig tri llwybr tuag at gymhwyster MA, gyda thrafodaeth feirniadol sydd yn gyfochrog, a mannau gweithio arbennig i’r myfyrwyr. Mae’r arddangosfa yn amlygu ymarfer aml-gyfrwng. Mae gwaith gwydr a ffotograffiaeth Catherine Bowen-Jones yn seiliedig ar atgofion o gartref a rhiaint.
Ceir ymchwiliad i ffurf adar yng ngwaith cerfluniol a darluniadol Hugh Williams, sydd yn llawn hiwmor a dychan. Mae peintiadau olew Sarah Lees yn creu teimlad o ‘ennui’ yn y llithriadau lliw, ffurf a chyd-bwysedd o oleuni a thywyllwch. Tirwedd yn ymyl ei chartref sydd yn sbardun i waith Katie Vickers, ac mae hi yn gweithio yn lleoliadol drwy ‘baentio’ gyda’r defnydd crai mae hi yn ddarganfod yn y safle penodol. Mae Mathew Thomas wedi datblygu dulliau soffistigedig cyfrifiadurol i archwilio patrymau Arabaidd.
This course offers three pathways towards achieving an MA, with interrelated critical discourse, and dedicated studio spaces for the students. The exhibition highlights the diverse practice of the students in this graduating group. Glasswork and photography by Catherine Bowen-Jones is based on her memories of childhood home and parents.
Hugh Williams’ welded steel sculpture and drawings captures the essence of birds using humorous, abstracted forms. Sarah Lees’ oil paintings conjure dissolving, shifting lyrical forms and spots and dabs of light, that reflect a sense of ‘ennui’. Landscape inspired mixed media paintings from Katie Vickers are made in the landscape using site-specific natural materials and left to the elements in the landscape. Matthew Thomas has developed advanced computer-generated images inspired by Middle Eastern geometric patterns.
