Shaw University exists to advance knowledge, facilitate student learning andachievement, to enhance the spiritual and ethical values of its students, and totransformadiversecommunityoflearnersintofuturegloballeaders.(ApprovedbytheBoardofTrusteesonOctober16,2008)
ExpandedStatementofPurpose
ShawUniversitywas founded in 1865 by theAmericanBaptistHomeMissionSocietyoftheBaptistChurchtoprovidetheologicaleducationtofreedmenaftertheCivilWar.Itisaprivate,coeducational,liberalartsinstitutionofhigherlearningwiththemaincampuslocatedinRaleigh,NorthCarolina,andeightsatellitecampusesdispersed throughout the state. Shaw University is committed to providingeducationalopportunitiestoallsegmentsofsocietywithoutregardtorace,creed,orethnicorigin.However,astheoldesthistoricallyAfrican-Americanuniversityinthesouth,ithasmaintainedaspecialinterestintheeducationofminoritiesfromdiversebackgrounds,withacademicpotentialforsuccess.Consistent with its motto, Pro Christo et Humanitate (For Christ and Humanity--that religion and learning may go hand in hand, and character grow with knowledge), Shaw University seeks to empower students with a sense of moral purpose based on Christian principles that provide guidance for intellectual and personal growth.

Central to the accomplishment of thismission is the recruitment and retention ofqualified faculty and staff,whopossess thequalifications and expertise to activelysupportstudentsinthelearningprocess.TheUniversitydemonstratesitscommitmenttoteachingandlearningbyprovidingqualityeducationalprogramsandservicesinasafeandsupportivelearningenvironment,whichmeettheneedsofstudents,promotespersonal growth and development, and fosters academic achievement and studentsuccess.Inadditiontoteachingandlearning,ShawUniversitystrivestocreateandmaintainanacademicclimatethatpromotesthescholarshipofresearchandthepursuitofnewknowledgethroughactiveresearchprograms.TheUniversityalsorecognizesitsresponsibilitytoinstillinstudents,theimportanceofmakingadifference,notonlyintheirownlives,butinthelivesofothers,bypartneringwithlocalcommunitiestoprovideservicesthatimprovethehumanconditionandcontributetothebettermentofsociety.(ApprovedbytheBoardofTrusteesonMay7,2010)
Historical Perspective
OnDecember1,1865,whenHenryMartinTupperundertooktheorganizationofatheologyclassasameansofteachingFreedmentoreadandinterprettheBible,nooneenvisionedtheendresultofthisbeingtheestablishmentofauniversity.Rapidgrowthinthesizeofthisclassledtothepurchaseoflandin1866forthepurposeoferectingabuildingtoserveasbothchurchandschool.Theschoolwasnamedthe“RaleighInstitute,”anditfunctionedassuchuntil1870,whenitwassupplantedby“TheShawCollegiateInstitute.”In1875,itwasincorporatedas“TheShawUniversity,”whichnameitstillbears,withthecharterspecifyingthatstudentsweretobeadmittedwithoutregardtorace,creed,orsex.Theschooldoesnotbear thenameof itsfounderbutofElijahShaw,thebenefactorwhoprovidedfundsforthefirstbuilding,ShawHall,erected in 1871.
Thecoeducationalemphasisof the institutionwasnotedwith theerectionofEsteyHall (1873), thefirstdormitory in theUnitedStates forAfrican-Americanwomen.Thebuildingwasnamedforitsprimarybenefactor,JacobEstey,andwasusedasaresidencehallforwomenuntil1968andformenfrom1968to1970.ThebuildingislistedintheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlacesandnowservesasaculturalcenterfortheRaleighcommunity.
ShawUniversitygraduateditsfirstclassin1878,itsfirsttheologygraduatesin1880,itsfirstclassofmedicaldoctorsin1886,awardeditsfirstlawdegreein1890,andawardeditsfirstpharmacydegreein1893.In1909,theNormalDepartmentwassupplantedby an EducationDepartment, and in 1910, the PreparatoryDepartment became afour-year academy.Theprofessional schoolswere closed in1918,but the college,the Theological Department, and the academy were continued, the latter existinguntil1926.TheTheologicalDepartmentbecameatheologicalseminaryin1933andcontinuedasapartofShawUniversityuntil1976,whenitbecameanindependentinstitution.

Since1921,Shawhas functionedprimarilyasa liberalartscollege,although ithas retained itsnameasauniversity. In1931,ShawUniversityelected itsfirstAfrican-Americanpresident,Dr.WilliamStuartNelson,whoservedfrom1931to1936. In 1963,Dr.JamesE.Cheek,a1955alumnusofShawUniversitybecameitsninthpresident.Dr.CheekwaspresidentfromDecember1963toJune1969.Dr.TalbertO.Shaw,the12thPresidentofShawUniversity(1987-2003),ledtheinstitution in its“Strides toExcellence:WhyNot theBest?”campaign.HeandShawUniversitywasthesubjectofaMarch1994coverarticleinThe Chronicle of Higher Education,theleadingcollegeanduniversityprofessionalpublication.ThearticlefocusedontheUniversity’srecenthistory,remarkingonthegreatstridesithasmadeandthemomentumithasdeveloped.
Dr.ClarenceG.Newsomeservedasthe13thPresident.Underhisadministration,cutting-edge technological advances were installed; land acquisition increased;professionalpartnershipswereestablished;andfaculty,staff,andstudentmoraleshowed signs of positive improvement. His vision, “A New Shaw for a NewMillennium,”coupledwith“StridestoExcellence:OnlytheBest”characterizedtheadministrationofDr.Newsome.
Dr.DorothyCowserYancywasnamedInterimPresidentinJune,2009.Dr.Yancyserved as the 14th and first female President of The Shaw University. Underher leadership, theUniversity restructured itsdebtandgreatly improved itsCFI(Composite Financial Index) ratio - an indication of institutional viability andcompletedrenovationstoover17campusbuildings.PriortoShawUniversity,Dr.Yancyservedasthe15thPresidentofJohnsonC.SmithUniversity.
InSeptember,2010,Dr.IrmaMcClaurinwasnamed15thPresidentofShawUni-versity.AmongDr.McClaurin’sgoalswastoestablish,foster,andnurtureacultureofcollaborationandpartnerships,specificallyrelatedtowhatshedescribedasthefourEs(E4)–employment,economy,education,andemergingtechnologies.
Dr.DorothyCowserYancyreturnedinSeptemberof2011totakethehelmofShawUniversityas its16thPresident.Thefocus,duringher tenure,hasbeenstrategicplanningtobuildInstitutionalcapacitytosupportteaching,researchandservice,create financial stability and growth, enhance student success and competitiveedge, create innovation and development, and enhance community engagementandservice.
Dr.GaddisFaulconwasnamedActingPresident in January2014. Dr.Faulcon,who served as a facultymember and theDean of theCollege ofGraduate andProfessionalStudiesatShawUniversity,haschosenthefollowingprioritiesfortheUniversity:toincreaseretention;toincreaseenrollmentattheCAPEsites;andtoimprovethecustomerserviceexperienceacrosstheacademy.

Refunds
Before requestinga refund,astudentshouldbecertain thatsufficient fundsareavailableforthenextsemester.TheUniversitycomputesitschargesonasemesterbasis.Consequently,iftheUniversityreceivesmoneyfromaone-timescholarshiporloansource(forexample,GuaranteedStudentLoan)suchfundswillbeapplied,infull,againstthesemesterinwhichitisreceived.Thismaycreateacreditbalanceforthesemester.Astudentwithoutacreditbalanceisnoteligibleforarefund.

In the determination of a student’s financial package, theUniversity takes intoconsideration any funds that are available to cover the cost of the student’seducation,includingfundsmadeavailableforstudentassistancebyathirdpartyintheformoftuitionassistance,scholarships,orpaymentonthestudent’sbehalf.

The total combined annual loan limit for subsidized and unsubsidized loans is$20,500.Theaggregatesubsidizedloanis$65,500and$73,000fortheunsubsidizedloan.The combined aggregate is $138,500.Loan repaymentbegins sixmonthsaftergraduation,withdrawalorafterthestudentceasestobeenrolledonatleastahalf-timebasis.
Alternative/Private Loans
Anumberofmajorlendersoffercredit-worthystudentstheopportunitytoborrowprivately in order to meet educational costs not covered by their financial aidawards.Inmostcasesacreditworthyco-signerisrequiredunless thestudenthassignificant income. Buckley AmendmentThe University policy for the administration of student educational records is inaccordance with the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and PrivacyAct(FERPA)of1974(P.L.93-380).PersonallyidentifiableinformationcontainedinstudenteducationalrecordswillnotbedisclosedtopersonsoutsidetheUniversitywithoutthepriorconsentofthestudent.Underthispolicy,thestudentalsohastherightofaccesstostudenteducationalrecordsmaintainedbytheUniversityoranydepartmentwithintheUniversity.A copy of theUniversity policy dealingwith the privacy of studenteducationalrecordsismaintainedintheOfficeofRecordsandRegistration.ForthepurposesofthisRegulation,“student”meansanindividualwhoisorhasbeeninattendanceattheuniversity.Itdoesnotincludepersonswhohavebeenadmittedbutdidnotattendtheuniversityorindividualsenrolledsolelyinnon-creditcourses.“Attendance”startswhenthe individualmatriculatesordeclares their intention toenrollattheuniversity,whichevercomesfirst.
WITHDRAWAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY
A student may receive a full refund for the fall and spring terms if the officialwithdrawaloccurspriortothefirstdayofclasses.StudentswhoofficiallywithdrawfromaclassorfromtheUniversityafterthefirstdayofclasswillreceivetuitionrefundsaccordingtothefollowingsixtypercent(60%)refundrateschedule:
Students who withdraw completely from the University prior to completing60%ofthedaysinagivensemesterarerefundedapercentageoftuitionandthemandatoryfeespaid.Studentswhowithdrawafterthe60%periodarenotentitled to a refundof anyportionof tuitionand fees.The refundwill equalto that portion of the periodof enrollment forwhich the students have beenchargedthatremainsonthelastdayofattendancebythestudentuptothe60%point(intime)ofthedayscompleted,inagivensemester.
Therefundforthesummertermis75%duringthefirstweek,withnorefundafterthatperiod.Thestudentiseligibleforarefundafterallchargesandaidhavebeenpostedtothestudent’saccount.Refundswillbeshownascreditspostedtothestudent’saccount,unlessthestudentrequestsacheckfortheamountoftherefund.Normally,checksareprocessedwithin two (2)weeks.There isno refund for studentswhowithdrawbecauseofdismissalor suspension.Withdrawal requires that a studentgiveverbalorwrittennotificationtotheDirectorofCounselingandcompletetheformsandconferencesrequired.

Introduction
TheMaster of Science inCurriculum and Instructionwith a concentration inEarlyChildhoodEducationisdesignedforearlychildhoodeducatorswhoworkdirectlywithyoungchildreninavarietyofearlychildhoodsettings,whoaccommodatechildrenwitharangeofabilitiesandspecialneeds,andwhoworkcollaborativelywithfamiliesandotherprofessionals.
Allregularlyadmittedstudentsareexpectedtohaveanundergraduatemajorconsistingofatleast30semesterhoursofcourseworkinEarlyChildhoodEducationandatleasttwo years of documented relevant educational or professional experience. Studentsareexpectedtobepracticingteachersinpublicandprivateearlychildhoodeducationsettings,includingthepublicschools,centers,andhome-basedprograms.
However, applicants who are licensed in other areas of education, such as SpecialEducation and Elementary Education and who have a minimum of two years ofdocumentedrelevanteducationalorprofessionalexperience,mayalsobeconsideredforadmission.Relevanteducationalorprofessionalexperienceincludessuchexperiencesaspublicschoolteachinginanotherfield(e.g.,SpecialEducation).

The Training Model
InstructionaldeliveryisconductedthroughtheuseofthetraditionalSocraticlecturemethod and the cooperative group-oriented case analysis method. Students areengagedinfield-basedactionresearchprojectsandactivitiesthatsupportcommunityservice and other scholarly pursuits. Additionally, students complete a researchproject in all courses. Application to the Master of Science Program
OnlytheofficialapplicationformsshouldbeusedinapplyingtotheMasterofSciencedegreeprograminCurriculumandInstruction.AdmissiontograduatestudycanbeauthorizedonlybytheGraduateProgramCommittee(consistingofgraduatefacultyandtheChair).TheprospectivestudentmustholdthedegreeofBachelorofArtsorBachelor of Science from an accredited college or university in theUnited Statesoritsequivalent—basedonafour-yearcurriculum—inaninstitutionoutsideoftheUnitedStates.Admission is competitiveand studentsare selectedbecauseof theirpreparation,experiences,intellectualandleadershipabilities.
Types of Admission
Unconditional Admission

Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal
Academic suspension occurs automatically at the end of the semester whena student fails to remove the academicwarning sanction. Letters of academicsuspensionwillbemailedtothestudentandtheDeanfromtheRegistrar’sOffice.StudentsmaysubmitanappealtotheGraduateAcademicStandardsCommitteeandbereadmittedupontheirrecommendation.
Academicdismissaloccursautomaticallyattheendofthesemesterwhenastudentfailstoremovetheacademicsuspension.Astudentwhohasbeenacademicallydismissedwillberequiredtoleavetheuniversityforonesemester.ThestudentmayappealthedismissalinwritingtotheGraduateAcademicStandardsCommittee.

Iftheappealisapproved,thereadmittedstudentwillbeallowedtoresumeattendingclasses.Iftheappealisdenied,theAcademicSuspension/AcademicDismissalwillstandandthestudentwillberequiredtocomplywiththeconditionsbasedonthedecisionoftheGraduateAcademicStandardsCommittee.Studentswillbeinformedofthecommittee’sdecisioninaformalletterfromtheDean.

Z Grade - Unofficially WithdrawnThefailinggradeof“Z”isgiventothosestudentswhoinitiallyattendedaclassbut,atsomepointduringthesemester,stoppedattendingandthatwasthebasisfortheirfailure.Thegradeof“Z”iscalculatedinthegradepointaverageinthesamemannerasthegradeof“F”,whichiszerogradepointsearned.Additionally,thegradeof“Z”mayimpactastudent’sfutureeligibilityforfinancialaid.
Academic AdvisingAttheoutset, theadvisorforstudents in theMasterofSciencedegreeprograminCurriculumandInstructionwillbetheGraduateProgramCoordinator.Astheprogramgrows,studentswillbeassignedtograduatefacultyadvisorsaccordingtotheirresearchinteresttoassurearelativelyevenadviseeloadandqualityofstudentadvisement.TheGraduateProgramCoordinator/advisorswillmonitor students’academicprogressthroughaprogramchecklist,advisementatregistrationperiods,professional disposition assessments and a review of students’ transcripts eachsemester.Graduate facultywillbeappointedby theChair to serveonstudents’graduate/thesiscommittees.
Repeating a CourseAstudent cannot receive credit twice for the samecourse that is repeated. If acourseisrepeatedinwhichcredithoursareearned,thestudent’spermanentrecordwillbeadjustedbysubtractingthehoursofthelowergradefromthetotalhoursearned.Credit hourswill then be recorded only for the higher grade. StudentsareresponsiblefornotifyingtheOfficeoftheRegistrar,viatheappropriatespaceontheregistrationform,regardingwhichcourseisbeingrepeated.Onlythenewgrade/quality points will be used to factor the resulting cumulative GPA. Mission
ShawUniversityDivinitySchoolprovidestheologicaleducationdedicatedtothepreparationofclergyandlaityforclinical,pastoralandteaching/researchministryprofessions.TheDivinitySchooliscommittedtothedevelopmentofaresearchinstitutewhose focus is leadership in the “practice ofministry” in theAfricanAmericancommunity,particularlyintheAfricanAmericanChurch.
History
The history of theDivinity School traces back to the very beginning of ShawUniversity in 1865.Between 1865 and 1919, three pivotal periodsmarked thedevelopmentoftheDivinitySchool.In1880,thetheologicalcourseproduceditsfirstgraduatesandin1889,thetheologicalcoursewasextendedtofouryears.In1900,thefirstBachelorofTheologydegreeswereawarded.In1919,followingareorganizationofShawUniversity,aMissionaryTrainingSchoolwasestablishedtopreparehomeandforeignmissionaries,socialserviceworkers,clergyandlaychurchleaders.TheTheologicalDepartment,asitwasthencalled,alsocontinuedtoprovidebasicministerialtrainingthroughaBachelorofTheologyProgramuntil1933.OnApril15,1933,theBoardofTrusteesofShawUniversityestablishedtheSchoolofReligion.
In 1961, the School of Religion became Shaw Divinity School, offering theBachelorofDivinity(BD)degree.In1969,theOfficeoftheSecretaryoftheStateofNorthCarolinacharteredtheShawDivinitySchoolasanon-stock,non-profitcorporation.TheBDdegreewasdiscontinuedandtheMasterofDivinitydegreewasoffered.Thethree-yearMDivprogramofferedadegreefocusedontrainingstudentsforministryprimarilyinAfricanAmericancommunities.

InFebruary,1988, theShawDivinitySchoolmoved from thecampusofShawUniversity to a new three and a half acre site located at 509HilltopDrive insoutheast Raleigh, North Carolina. The Hilltop campus became the centrallocation for theDivinitySchool,providing space foradministrativeoffices, thelibraryandclassrooms.G.FranklinWiggins,analumnusofShawUniversityandShawDivinitySchoolandatrusteeoftheDivinitySchool,alongwithhiswife,IdaWigginsofPeekskill,NewYork,purchasedtheHilltopcampusandleasedittoShawDivinitySchoolwithfirstoptiontobuy.TheHilltopcampuswaseventuallynamed“TheShaw-WigginsCampus.”
Between1998and2002,severalsignificanteventsoccurredinthehistoryoftheShawDivinitySchool.Inthesummerof1998,ShawDivinitySchoolremergedwith ShawUniversity.Under themerger, ShawDivinity School became ShawUniversity Divinity School which was accredited by both theAssociation ofTheological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada and the SouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchools(SACS).
In 1999, ShawUniversityDivinity School (SUDS) relocated to the campus ofShaw University. The Divinity School was housed in the historic Estey HallBuilding.InNovember2000, theShawUniversityDivinitySchoolrelocatedtothehistoricandrestoredLeonardBuilding.In2002,aseconddegree,theMasterofArtsinChristianEducationdegree,wasapprovedbybothSACSandATSandwasofferedbeginninginthefallof2002.

ShawUniversityusestheFederalDefinitionandtheCarnegieUnittodeterminesemestercredithoursawardedtostudentsforcoursework.TheUniversityawardsaCarnegieUnitofcredittostudentsforsatisfactorycompletionofone(1)fifty(50)minutesessionofclassroominstructionordirectfacultyinstruction.Aunitofcreditequatestothreehoursofstudentworkperweek(1)hourlectureplustwo(2)hoursofhomeworkorthree(3)hoursoflabfornotlessthat16weeksortheequivalenttimeinnon-traditionalterms.Fordistanceeducationcourses,thesameprocessandcriteriaareusedtodeterminecredithours.ShawUniversitydoesnotawardcreditforcourseworktakenonanoncreditbasis.
Transfer of Credits
ShawUniversityDivinitySchool accepts transfer credit for courseworkcompletedtowardstheMDivorMACEdegreesfromotherinstitutionsaccreditedbytheAssociationofTheologicalSchools(ATS).Nomorethanone-halfofthecreditsrequiredfortheMDiv(39semesterhours)ortheMACEdegree(25semesterhours)maybeapprovedfortransfercredit.TheDivinitySchoolmayaccepttransfercreditforgraduatecoursescompletedtowardsnon-theologicaldegreegraduatedegreeprograms.Thecoursestobetransferredmustsubstantially correspond to the content of a course in the current Divinity Schoolcatalog.Ordinarily,nomorethan6graduatesemesterhourswillbetransferredfromanon-theologicalgraduatedegreeprogram.Allrequestsfortransfercreditrequirefacultyapproval.Nocreditsmorethanten(10)yearsoldatatimeoftransferwillbeaccepted.All courses transferred towards theMDiv andMACE degrees will appear on thestudent’stranscriptasaPass(“P”).Transfercreditsarenotcountedinthestudent’sGPA.
Shared Credits

Academic Standing and Satisfactory Academic Progress
At the end of each semester, the records of all matriculating graduate/professionalstudentsarereviewedtodeterminesatisfactoryacademicprogress.Agraduatestudent’sacademicstandingatShawUniversity isclassified inoneoffourofficialstandings:GoodStanding,AcademicWarning,AcademicSuspension,orAcademicDismissal.Astudentwillremainingoodacademicstandingifhe/shedemonstratessatisfactoryacademic progress in accordance with the standards listed below. Standards bywhichastudentwillbeevaluatedincludeprogressinincrementsofhourscompleted(quantitative)andcumulativegradepointaverageearned(qualitative).
Quantitative Standards:
• Studentsreceivingfinancialaidmustsuccessfullyearn67%ofthecredithoursattempted. Attempted hours include all hours attempted at theUniversity.[Example:Ifastudenthasattempted(enrolledin)inatotalof18credithours,he/shemustearnaminimumof12credithours(18credithoursx0.67=12credithours)inordertomaintainsatisfactoryacademicprogress.]
• Themaximumtimeframeallowedforastudenttocompletedegreerequirementsandremaineligibletoreceivefinancialaidis150%ofthetotalcredithoursrequiredtoreceiveadegreeinaparticularcourseofstudy.Hoursacceptedfortransferwillcounttowardthemaximumnumberofattemptedhours.Thismeansthatgraduateprogramsrequiring42hoursforgraduationwillbeeligibleforfinancialaidduringthefirst63attemptedhours.Programsrequiring90hourswillbeeligibleforfinancialaidduringthefirst135attemptedhours,andprogramsrequiring66hourswillbeeligibleforfinancialaidduringthefirst99attemptedhours.

A student is placed on academicwarningwhen the student’s semester grade pointaverageandcredithoursarebelowtheminimumrequirementsaccordingtothetableabove.Ifastudentfailstoremovethesanctionbytheendofthefollowingsemester,thestudentwillbeplacedonacademicsuspension.
Studentswhohaveanacademicwarning,orwhohavebeenreadmittedafteranacademicsuspensionordismissalmustadheretothefollowing:
1. Enrollinnomorethan9semesterhourseachsemester.2. Repeatallrequiredcourses(whenoffered)forwhichatleastthegradeof“C”has

Completion of the Degree Programs
Themaximumlengthof timetocomplete thedegreeprogramsissixyearsfor theMACEandnineyearsfortheMDiv.Ifastudentwithdrawsfromadegreeprogramandislaterreadmittedtothatsamedegreeprogram,thetimethestudentwasoutoftheprogramdoesnotcounttowardsthistimelimit.Please note, however, that if a student withdraws and later is readmitted and resumes her/his degree program, only credits that are ten years old or less can be counted towards the degree. Credits that are older than ten years at the time the student resumes the degree will not be counted.
Distance Education Courses and Courses at the High Point Site
ShawUniversitycurrentlyoffersDistanceEducationcoursesintheformofonlinecourse, hybrid courses (less than 50% face-to-face), and video teleconferencecourses.
Allstudents,includingtransferstudents,willbeexpectedtotakeonefullsemesterofcoursesinface-to-faceformatpriortotakinganyDistanceEducationcourses.Thepurposeofthisistobuildcommunityandtoofferanopportunityforfacultytoassessstudentabilities.

Absences
Divinity School students are required to attend classes regularly and on time.Studentsareexpectedtoarrangeplannedabsencesfromclasswiththeprofessor.Eachprofessorisresponsibleforinformingstudentsoftheabsencepolicyforhis/hercourseandenforcingthepolicy.
Tardiness
Studentsareexpectedtobeontimeforallclassesandrequiredactivities.Penaltiesfortardinessareimposedatthediscretionoftheprofessor,subjecttotheDean’sapprovalwhenappropriate.
Dismissals
