for increasing cultural awareness by establishing a
world-class destination for public art.

for private or municipal urban development projects;
■ integrates professional artists into the planning, design, and construction of city
and privately developed facilities, e.g., buildings, parks, streetscapes, and other
facilities and spaces that would beneit from participation by an artist;

neighborhoods and citizens;

It is gratifying to work in a public art
environment which offers people
opportunities to stroll, to linger, to connect,
and to discover. Our city has an extraordinary
collection of public art that embraces us all
— it expresses our civic values and enhances
our environment.
The Greater Des Moines Public Art
Foundation (GDMPAF) strengthens the
artistic climate within which we operate
every day. Everything depends upon, and
derives from, working in creative partnership
with others, from individual and corporate
supporters, to community alliances and the
dedicated government sponsors that help
inance public art programming.
The iscal year which closed on June
30, 2014, marked ten years of building a
powerful platform to advance the best of
public art. The last 12 months have provided
the opportunity to assess the current effort
and to look towards the future.
The October 2013 dedication of Jun
Kaneko’s mural Expanison marked the inal
stage of the artist’s two-part installation
and the culmination of an eight year team
effort, to which broad inancial support
was indispensable. This project is a great
example of our public art process that
depends upon creative and collaborative
approaches to planning. The integration of the
artworks into the plaza and architecture have
created a lively public space and provided a
central hub where none existed before.
An ongoing initiative to place compelling,
temporary art installations in highly
accessible and visible public locations has
moved forward. Through the ProjectSPACES
program, a work group of art, environmental,
and project management professionals
conceive of and carry out selected projects
annually. A 2013 highlight was an exterior
mural by Travis Rice for the Pattie & Jim
Cownie Cultural Center at the Iowa State
Fairgrounds . This temporary project
drew large crowds throughout the eleven-
day event. Additional projects are being
developed using nationwide “Calls for
Artists,” and selected design concepts will
be created in the upcoming iscal year.
Communication has been vital to bring
GDMPAF values, its aspirations, and raison
d’être to the public and to generate a sense of
pride. Both the app and the Blog work toward
the goal of providing easy access to public art
and stimulating interest in public art.
My sincere thanks and gratitude is
extended to the Board of Directors, under
the thoughtful and engaged leadership of
President Paul Mankins, for their collective
efforts, trust, and effectiveness in advancing
the mission and vision. Extraordinary
leadership adds signiicant value to an
organization. On January 29, 2014, the
GDMPAF conferred Emeritus Status, its
highest commendation of distinguished
service, to three former Board members—
Pam Bass-Bookey, Jeff Fleming, and
Kristi Lund Lozier—for their consistent
philanthropic support and demonstrated
interest. This year I’m happy to welcome
new board members Lauren M. G. Burt,
Paula J. Feltner, Tim Hickman, Robert C.
Furstenau, and Michelle Book Gowdy, who
bring additional perspectives and expertise
to the organization.
Together, we serve as stewards of
this remarkable public art program.
Commitment to creative enterprise and
support of the philosophy of inclusion
help to create and maintain a world-class
destination for public art and civic vitality.
Others have joined in as well. For
your generous contributions, I thank you—
artists, architects, collectors, consultants,
contractors, designers, developers, donors,
educators, engineers, government agencies,
museums, neighbors, urban planners, and
volunteers. Together, we accomplished
great things!

selected in 2013 as the site of the irst
ProjectSPACES installation. The
Cultural Center annually hosts Iowa’s
largest art show.
For the 2013 State Fair, Travis Rice
created a temporary mural for the
west facade of the Cultural Center.
Eight feet high and 84-feet long, Rice’s
large-scale computer generated design,
Stripes, created a trompe l'oeil illusion
of a confetti-like movement of colors.
Rice’s artwork uses geometric forms

The Grafiti Wall project coincided with
the Des Moines Social Club’s move
into the historic irehouse at 9th and
Mulberry Streets. The project, located
on the west wall of the City’s 9th Street
viaduct, directly east of the irehouse,
is visible to attendees of Social Club
events and passersby who access the

initial focus was on Des Moines’s street
art community. The grafiti wall mural
will rotate on an annual basis.
The GDMPAF reviewed and
approved the concept design by artist
Brandon J. Atlas, a member of the
hip-hop trio and artist collective Maxilla

Club will collaborate on future projects,
using a competitive online application
process to locate grafiti artists and
organizing a selection committee
with representatives from both
organizations.
in the irst weeks following the release of the 2014 version of DsM Public Art, 129 new users have used the app 305 times. The app continues to build an audience and receives positive reviews for its design, content and user interface.

TEMPLE FoR PERFoRMinG ARTs,
LoCUsT sTREET
Dedicated May 16, 2006, this work of art
by the American artist Siah Armajani, is
completed only when someone enters it, sits
down to play chess or reads the poetry or in
some way becomes a participant. Armajani has
created such environments all over the world,
and they all relect his belief in public art.
These public spaces he creates are not
only beautiful, but they also function as an
opportunity for social interaction among
citizens, something the artist tries to
encourage in our democracy. Many ideas
are integrated into his work here: art,
architecture, urban planning, sociology,
aesthetics — and play. Chess is a game,
but it's a game that requires thinking and
contemplation and planning, qualities that
beneit an individual and society overall.
By including lines from the poetry of his
friend, the American poet Barrett Watten,
Armajani reminds us to look more deeply
into ourselves and our world.
This public art/chess/poetry installation
was envisioned by the family of Bennett
Webster as a gift to the people of Des
Moines. They, along with the artist and the
poet, invite you to sit down, play a game of
chess, talk to your neighbors, think about
the poetry, and enjoy a multi-dimensional
experience.

HY-VEE HALL, 3RD & PARK sTREETs
The hedge maze, a key element of “Until
the Woods Began to Move,” is integrated
into an exterior site next to the Iowa Events
Center. It is below grade, between the
building and retaining wall, and on a sloped
surface. Through a condition assessment,
it was determined that a professional with
expertise in developing an outdoor garden
maze was needed. An ongoing pruning
regiment to shape the arborvitae trees into
a maze form was considered necessary.
However the trees were damaged by severe
winter conditions.
This year, Robert Harvey began
collaborating with the artist, GDMPAF, and
the Iowa Events Center on this project. He
will develop an action plan to revitalize the
hedge maze. Harvey, professor emeritus
of Landscape Architecture Department at
Iowa State University, has received honors
from The American Society of Landscape
Architects and is nationally recognized for
his research and design services.

this year gdmpaF researched and examined
possible sites for the public art project,
“a monumental Journey,” honoring the
founders of the national bar association. in
september 2014, one potential site for the
project on the northwest grounds adjacent
to the Judicial branch building on state

state capital planning commission’s site
Features committee. later that month, an
informational meeting about the project
and its proposed site took place with chief

the state court administrator. in october
2013, the capitol planning commission had
reviewed the project and provided support
pending more detailed information, which
will be determined during the design
development phase.
Further review of possible sites engaged
the des moines city urban designer. by april
2014, four sites were deemed “shovel ready;”
that is, available in the short term and not
requiring extensive investment for site
preparation. they were: the Judicial branch

Paintallica’s art projects have been
seen at the Time Based Art Festival in
Portland, Oregon, and in galleries in
Las Vegas, Portland, Los Angeles and
Chicago, in addition to their numerous

Euclidean geometry describes the space occupied by this inventive work of art, and
demands true insight into the subject. The two stone pillars and the tree are organized
as points of an isosceles triangle. A ginkgo tree is positioned at the northwest point of a
triangle, and charts an imaginary line that runs from the entrance of the Hoover Building
to the central dome of the State Capitol building. More information is available from the
GDMPAF website and DSM Public Art app.
