MOCCASIN CROSS COUNTRY

The Moccasin cross country teams have been a dominantpower in the Sunshine State Conference.

The men’s team has fi nished fi rst or second at the SSC Cham-pionships 18 straight years, including a string of 14 straight SSCtitles that was snapped in 2011. Overall, the men’s team has won a league-best 15 SSC Championships. The women’s squad haswon seven SSC crowns and has fi nished fi rst or second in 14 of the last 17 years.

Individually, Florida Southern has had the men’s individualSSC champion 12 of the last 16 years, including two-time cham-pions Gary Crossan (1998-99), Tyrone Bell (2004-05) and Ben Martucci (2009-10). Florida Southern’s women have claimed sixSSC individual titles, including back-to-back wins by Alli Tatan-gelo (1999-2000). In 2006, SSC women’s champion Jael Koechplaced sixth at the NCAA Division II Championship, making herthe Moccasins’ fi rst two-time All-American in cross country. Shewas 12th in 2005.

The women’s team has made three trips to the NCAA DivisionII Championship, fi nishing 11th in 1999, 21st in 2001 and 15th in 2006. The men’s team made a sixth appearance at the NCAADivision II championship in 2010, placing 23rd overall. Previously, FSC had placed 22nd in 2009, 21st in 2007; 15th in 2006; 13th in 2005 and 20th in 2004. The women have had nine top-fi ve regional fi nishes, while the men have fi nished in the top fi ve 11times at NCAA regional appearances, including 2007’s fi rst-everregional title.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSDavid Tomchinsky and Chris Yanichko of the men’s cross

country and track tea, Mackenzie Rideout of the women’s crosscountry team and Alyssa Shuey and Alec Slamal of the women’strack team were each named recipents of the NCAA Division IIAcademic Achievement Award in 2012-13. The fi vesome wereamong 65 student-athletes so honored from Florida SouthernCollege.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete had to have anoverall grade point average of at least 3.50, had to have complet-ed at least two years of college work and had to have been anactive member of an athletic team.

The Division II Academic Achievement Awards were fi rst pre-sented in 2009 when FSC had 46 honorees. The awards are spon-sored by the Division II Athletics Directors Association.

In addition, Yanichko was also named a Capital One/CoSIDAThird Team Academic All-American last season, becoming theschool’s third-ever Academic All-American in men’s cross country.

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Confer-ence has risen from a single sport organization tothe Division II “Conference of Champions.” Sinceits inception, the conference has grown steadily insports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schoolshave won NCAA national titles (84 total) in baseball, softball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf,men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer,rowing and volleyball, and are nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming and women’s basketball. Thefirst NCAA Division II national championship wonby an SSC school was in the spring of 1978 as the Florida Southern baseball team captured its first of nine national titles that year. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’sbasketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’sand women’s soccer, mens and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s ten-nis, women’s volleyball, softball, men’s lacrosse (beginning in 2013-14) and women’s rowing. The first women’s SSC championships began in 1981-82. The SSC has led all 22 Division II conferences in the NCAA AcademicSuccess Rate every year it has been measured. Each year, over 800 student-athletes are named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll with GPA’s over 3.20on a 4.00 scale. SSC members include: Barry University (Miami Shores); Eckerd Col-lege (St. Petersburg); Florida Tech (Melbourne); Florida Southern College(Lakeland); Lynn University (Boca Raton); Nova Southeastern University(Ft. Lauderdale); Rollins College (Winter Park); Saint Leo University (Saint Leo); and the University of Tampa (Tampa).
