Sock Hops became popular in the 1950s. They were dances typically held in school gymnasiums for teens. Dancers would often kick off their shoes and dance in socks or stockings to avoid marking up the gym floors—and to get better slide in dances like the Twist and the Mashed Potato!

History has it that a veteran Newark candy-maker produced the first batch of candied apples in 1908. While experimenting in his candy shop with red cinnamon candy for Christmas, he dipped some apples into the mixture and put them in the windows for display. He sold the whole first batch for 5 cents each and later sold thousands yearly. Soon candied apples were being sold across the country!

Charles Dickens’ classic tale is brought to life with our “A Christmas Carol” series.
A Christmas Carol and Charles Dickens mean a great deal to everyone at Byers’ Choice. Certainly no other author and story come close in their influence on our company. The story speaks to our mission of bringing people together and not forgetting those less fortunate. Scrooge’s declaration, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year” constantly guides us. The message to celebrate Christmas and help others is just as important today; Dickens could not have said it better!

Cries of LondonThe 2013 Cries of London series features a Crier Selling Glass Ornaments. Glass Christmas ornaments became popular in the latter part of the 19th century when German entrepreneurs began mass producing the delicate baubles. Initially replicating fruits, nuts and other food items, the manufacturers soon began to create additional shapes and forms —discovering that there was no apparent end to the market for this new type of Christmas ornament.

The first record of candy canes in the United States was of those hanging on a Christmas tree in 1847. It wasn’t until about 1900 that the red stripes and mint flavors were added. The red and white stripes on these Santas are quite festive!

In Poland, Christmas is often described as the Festival of the Star. On Christmas Eve, the children are sent out to spot the night’s first star before a candle is lit and the holiday meal is served. After the feast, the children await a visit from the Star Man who travels from door to door with a group of caroling Star Boys.
The Star Man asks the children questions to confirm their religious knowledge before passing out small gifts to all the good children.

The style of dress for George was taken from the famous painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas Eve, 1776. The General is holding a whip, echoing Thomas Jefferson’s statement that Washington was “the best horseman of his age, and the most graceful figure that could be seen on horseback.” Proceeds from the sale of this figure will help support the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.

The First ThanksgivingIn 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. This harvest meal has become a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans. Although this feast is considered by many to be the very first Thanksgiving celebration, it was actually in keeping with a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a successful bounty of crops.

In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene with
members of his congregation portraying the birth of Christ, as described in the
gospels of Matthew and Luke. This tradition spread throughout Catholic countries with each adding the flavor
of their own traditions to their interpretation of the story.
Shepherds join Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in our Nativity Series.
