Tony simotes, artistic Director
I am beyond thrilled to welcome you all as we celebrate our 35th Season in historic Lenox, MA. As a founding member of Shakespeare & Company, it has been a very nostalgic past few months for me. With preparations for the season taking hold, I found myself reflecting on the early days of the Company and how time has molded it into the vibrant, dynamic, and revolutionary institution it is today.
When our merry band first came to the Berkshires, there was a convention in theatre that we all sought to change. Thirty-five years later, the influence of our founders has shaped the very fabric of American theatre, and Shakespeare & Company was—and continues to be—at the roots of that rebellion. I am so pleased to celebrate the legacy of Tina Packer and to welcome back many of those founding members, including Kristin Linklater, B.H. Barry and Susan Dibble (representing the work of the late John Broome), as we honor their careers and contributions.
To continue the festivities, I am elated to be working with a dear friend and mentor, Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis, whom I will direct in The Tempest. Founders’ Theatre will also feature founding member Dennis Krausnick in the title role of King Lear, a time warp from the Split Knuckle Theatre Company called Endurance, and the New England premiere of Terry Teachout’s one-man play about Louis Armstrong, Satchmo at the Waldorf, starring John Douglas Thompson. But that’s not all. Down the hill in our Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre we’ll be offering more daring and provocative new work, including Mark Roberts’ profound and dark comedy Parasite Drag, the very funny Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, and the late Norman Plotkin’s brilliant one-woman show, Cassandra Speaks.
On the Rose Footprint Theatre, we’ll revisit the work of Molière by staging Tartuffe, his hilarious commentary on hypocrisy. We also have a thrilling host of new programming, including the weekly Studio Series of staged readings, a special literary series Author! Author!, and some enthralling lectures from our founding members who will share the talents they began to refine at Shakespeare & Company.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Managing Director Nicholas J. Puma Jr., our Board Chairman Richard A. Mescon, and our stellar Boards of Directors and Overseers for helping Shakespeare & Company weather the doldrums of a tough economy. Because of their tireless work, our 35th Season will truly be a season for celebration.
Here’s to the first thirty-five and to the next! Thank you for your support and for helping us realize the dream.

King Lear is one of Shakespeare’s most profound and devastatingly beautiful tales of regret. A misguided king. A divided country. A family’s love destroyed. Holderness sets the stage in 1906 Russia as the monarchy is crumbling, and Lear’s world descends into madness as he comes to terms with his tragic missteps. Dennis Krausnick takes on the role of the aging monarch in this precisely crafted and heartbreaking story. Lear’s epic journey is underscored by music director Bill Barclay’s provocative musical compositions.

Artistic Director Tony Simotes and Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis team up to re-envision Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Filled with moving, funny and enchanting moments, the underpinnings in this fantastical world, much like our own, are steeped in mystery, darkness and the unknown. Simotes’ fresh and provocative take, set in the 1940s, aligns the magic and mystery of the island with the often tumultuous relationships between family – with a twist – Ms. Dukakis plays Duke Prospero as a woman. Love, forgiveness and irreverence reign supreme in this, Shakespeare’s best-loved exploration of humanity.

by TERRy TEACHOuT / directed by GORDON EDELSTEIN / featuring JOHN DOuGLAS THOMPSON
This thrilling one-man play celebrates the life of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, with OBIE Award-winning actor John Douglas Thompson in the challenging double role of Armstrong, the world-famous jazzman, and Joe Glaser, his mob-connected manager. The time is March of 1971. The 70-year-old Armstrong is backstage at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, preparing for what will be his last performance and wondering whether he paid too high a price for his fame. In the New England premiere of Satchmo at the Waldorf, critically acclaimed author Terry Teachout’s first play, Thompson shows you the private Armstrong, charming and angry—and bluntly, shockingly honest.

by NORMAN PLOTKIN / directed by NICOLE RICCIARDI / featuring TOD RANDOLPH
In a tour de force performance, critically acclaimed actor Tod Randolph portrays Dorothy Thompson, the complex journalistic icon whom Time magazine once called the most influential woman in America next to Eleanor Roosevelt. A trusted advisor to many world leaders, Thompson was the first American correspondent to be expelled from Nazi Germany on the personal order of Adolf Hitler. In this tell-all tale, we join Dorothy amidst the chaos of last-minute wedding day preparations, but Thompson spends more time regaling us about her colorful career than she does getting ready to tie the knot.
This production is dedicated to playwright, friend and collaborator Norman Plotkin, whose extraordinary talents will not be forgotten.

by MARK ROBERTS / directed by STEPHEN ROTHMAN featuring KATE ABBRuzzESE · ELIzABETH ASPENLIEDER · JASON ASPREy · JOSH AARON MCCABE
Award-winning director Stephen Rothman makes his S&Co. debut with this darkly comic and hard-hitting story. Sharp wit and tragedy collide as deeply estranged brothers navigate old wounds. Relationships between husbands, wives, and family unravel as a mid-Western storm brews on the horizon. Written by Mark Roberts (Tv’s Two and a Half Men and Mike and Molly), Parasite Drag was a hit in last season’s Studio Festival of Plays.

Two survival stories collide as desks become ship decks and four actors become dozens of characters in a story that spans ninety-five years and 8,000 miles. Office gymnastics meets daring Antarctic exploration in the unlikely setting of a Hartford insurance office in this inventive and funny piece by Split Knuckle Theatre. British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton kept twenty-seven men alive for two years in the most inhospitable climate on earth. Ninety-five years later, insurance man Walter Spivey relives Shackleton’s fate.
