Risky BusinessThe 2013 Spirit & Place Festival will explore the theme RISK. Hoosiers are not generally considered risk-takers. A recent essay on Indiana’shistory noted, "We are followers, not leaders; thestate of vice-presidents, not presidents. Our motto is...‘Good enough is good enough’." At the same time, ourhistory is dotted with impressive contrary evidence, from the revitalization of downtown Indianapolis and construction of a multi-million dollar footballstadium (without a team!) to the hosting of the 1987 Pan Am Games and the2012 Super Bowl.
What issues need strategic risk-taking? How can we surf the space betweensafety and danger in ways that stimulate community vitality? What risks can we take during Spirit & Place to galvanize change for pressing social, economic, and educational challenges? Visit spiritandplace.org for guidelinesif you are interested in presenting a program, performance, panel discussion, workshop, exhibit, or other program that examines RISK in November 2013.
About the Spirit & Place FestivalWinner of the NUVO Cultural Vision Award and the Indiana AchievementAward, the Spirit & Place Festival builds stronger and more inclusive communities. Now in its 17th year, the festival’s “never-seen-before” programs reveal—and shape—civic vibrancy by linking disparate people and organizations, mobilizing ideas, and forging personal and institutionalconnections in a time when civic participation is in decline. Through the arts, the festival uses the language of metaphor to explore sometimes difficultideas. Through the humanities, the festival illuminates the distinct and common narratives of the human condition. Through religion, the festivalembraces the values of compassion, fairness, hospitality, and service thatfuel our life in community.
Spirit & Place is a community project managed by The Polis Center, part ofthe IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. The Polis Center works collaborativelyto provide community-based research, analysis, information, and access toadvanced information technologies. Spirit & Place is an example of Polis’scommitment to creating collaborative, practical, and effective solutions forthe communities in which we live.
