Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Peter Green will enter his fourth season as head coach of the
Chowan University volleyball program. In the two years in which
the Hawks have been a member of the CIAA, Green has led his
squad to a CIAA title each year. The Hawks finished the 2010
season 22-13 overall and 20-3 in CIAA play, en route to the
conference championship. Chowan defeated St. Augustine’s
College in the 2010 CIAA Championship, 3-2. Green has
compiled a 73-34 overall coaching record at Chowan and helped
produce last year's CIAA Player of the Year, Karina Monroe. The
2010 team placed two student-athletes on each the CIAA First-
Team, Second-Team, and Rookie-Team.
Green came to Chowan after serving as assistant coach at
Randolph-Macon College for five seasons. The Yellow Jackets
consistently finished in the top three teams of the reputable NCAA
DIII Old Dominion Athletic Conference since 2003. Green played
an integral role in the recruitment and retention of the student-
athletes on the volleyball squad while he was employed with RMC
during those seasons.
Along with his assistant coaching experience at RMC, Green
brings with his a vast club coaching background in the greater
Richmond and Fredericksburg areas of Virginia. He has been a
head coach in the respectable Richmond Volleyball Club
organization and spent over five years with the Fredericksburg
Juniors Volleyball Club as both an assistant and head coach. He
currently works in the Tidewater area of Virginia with a club
organization. From 2001-2003 Green was employed by his alma
mater, Fredericksburg Christian High School. After serving as an
assistant coach for the JV girls volleyball team in 2001, he was
promoted to head coach in his final two seasons. In 2002, he led
that team to a 2nd place conference finish. He also served as the
head varsity boys volleyball coach in his last year and guided that
squad to a 3rd place conference finish.

In her own words… What is your favorite non-athletic childhood experience? “My favorite non-athletic childhood
memories would have to be my family vacations. My family loves to visit warm weather places since we live in
Chicago, and my three most memorable trips were going to Florida, South Carolina, and Arizona. We would
pack up all of our things and travel in one small car. Even though the ride was tight at times, I enjoyed listening
to music, sightseeing, and just relaxing with my family on the way. Whether we spent everyday at the beach,
toured the Grand Canyon, or rode the amusement park rides at Disney World, it was always a new
experience I was able to share with the people I love most. I not only gained an interest in traveling as a hobby
but I was able to build a close relationship with my family throughout the years!”

In her own words… What is your favorite Coach Green saying and why? “I love when we're in the middle of a

all out and helps us push through even when we're exhausted. “
Name a talent that you simply do not have. “Cooking. I am awful at making just about any type of food. When
I was thirteen, I caught half of my kitchen on fire and ever since then I refuse to use the stove when I'm
home alone.”

Chowan University stands in the
old Albemarle region of North
Carolina between the Roanoke and
Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner
of the state. The Murfreesboro area
was first settled during the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries, when the
principal inhabitants were several
Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.
Today, the stately old homes seem to
whisper of the storied colonial and
antebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately
60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120
miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,
discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,
and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,
the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours
and special events are offered
throughout the year by local groups.
