earning an Academic All-MAC nod, he also picked up EMUs Most Improved Runner award along with teammate James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester). Hughes, a sophomore, also garnered second team All-MAC accolades after placing ninth at the MAC Championships with a time of 26:12.6. Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington-Wellington College New Zealand) is coming off of a stellar freshman season, being awarded All-MAC second team honors, as well as All-Region accolades after finishing 25th (31:49.98) at the Great Lakes Regional in 2009. Ejigu will be joined by teammates, juniors Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio- Northview) and Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe), who both placed 33rd and 54th, respectively, at the 2009 MAC Championship. Senior Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater) will bring experience to this years team, as will juniors Sergei Anderson (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville), Justin Huey (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth), Nicholas Immell (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman), Andrew Pfeiffer (Clarence, N.Y.-Clarence), and Wes Stoody (Fenton, Mich.-Flint Powers Catholic). Also returning in 2010 are sophomores Sal Caroniti (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Brecksville-Broadview Heights),

Gabe Ellis (Lebanon, Ohio-Lebenon), Moe Frisch (Toledo, Ohio-Whitmer), Josh George (Toronto, Ontario-Frontenac), Tim Harris (Detroit, Mich.-Cass Tech), Jamal Johnson (Detroit, Mich.-Martin Luther King Jr.), and Nate Lonsway (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin). Cody Chabola (Kingsville, Ohio-Edgewood), Dan Culbertson (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), Nick Petro (Erie, Mich. Monroe), and Matt Wines (Pinckney, Mich.) were all redshirted last season as freshmen and will be looking to challenge for a Varsity position. The Eagles will bring in plenty of talent for their incoming freshman class, according to Goodridge. These individuals have the potential to challenge for Varsity positions immediately,

Goodridge stated. Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) has won three New Zealand National titles, including a New Zealand Secondary Schools National Cross Country Championship. Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent St. Marys S.S.) has represented Canada the past two years in a row in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Cross Country Championships, while transfer Grzegorz Kalinowski (Gostkowo, P o l a n d - N i c o l a u s Copernicus) placed sixth in the Polish National Short Course Cross Country Championships. Ian Hancke (Haslett, Mich.-Haslett) placed 12th in the Michigan after narrowly falling short

of their fifth consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship in 2009, the Eastern Michigan University Mens Cross Country team will look toward reclaiming the title in 2010. Heading into his 10th season as Head Coach, John Goodridge is confident in the resilience of this squad, who placed second last season behind Kent State University. Last year, our four-year streak of winning the MAC Championship ended, said Goodridge. The guys took that loss very seriously. They are

not lacking for motivation to bring the championship back to Ypsilanti. Not only do the Eagles expect to succeed, but the MAC preseason polls also reveal the same. The Green and White are predicted to take the 2010 MAC Championship, as voted on by the conferences head coaches. EMU also made the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCCA) preseason poll, ranking eighth in the Great Lakes Region. These preseason polls recognize the talented returning squad. Even

though the Eagles suffered a huge loss after graduating Curtis Vollmar, a two-time First Team All-MAC honoree. EMU will return 18 from last years roster, many of which greatly contributed during the 2009 campaign. Senior captain Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich. -Prairie Heights) looks to lead the Eagles into the 2010 season. In 2009, Hammersmith helped the Eagles by placing second at the MAC Championship (28:18.6). His time was good for a 10th place finish and second team All-MAC honors. Besides

They will be joined by fellow incoming freshmen Kenneth Cooper (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), Daniel Egner (Novi, Mich.-Novi), Lyle Kafer (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale), and Warren Witchell (Williamster, Mich.-Dansville). Freshman Drew Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) will be also be joining the squad along side his brother, Cole. The Eagles 2010 schedule is very similar to last seasons, including many meets close to home. Our schedule provides quite a few opportunities for our fans to

support the team, Goodridge said. Five of our meets are in state. EMU will open up the year with the Detroit Titan Invitational on Sept. 11. The team will then head to the Western Ontario Invite on Sept. 25 in London, Ontario. The Green and White will then head to South Bend, Ind. for the fifth straight year participating in the Notre Dame Invite, Oct. 1, followed by the EMU Classic on Oct. 23. The Eagles will then head back to Three Rivers, Mich. to fight for the MAC title on Oct. 30 for the 2010 MAC Championship.

head CoachJohn goodridgealma Mater - long island, 72, Michigan 74 Tenth season

The 2010-11 season mark the 10th season for John Goodridge as the head cross country coach at Eastern Michi-gan University and the veteran coach has enjoyed an outstand-ing coaching career. With EMUs Mid-American Conference championships in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, Goo-dridge has coached conference cross country championship teams in the MAC, Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference. Since arriving at EMU nine seasons ago, he has coached two NCAA National Championship top three indi-viduals including 2001 National Champion Boaz Cheboiywo, six cross country All-Americans, four NCAA Great Lakes Regional Individual Champions, six Mid-American Con-ference Individual Champions and 36 All-MAC harriers. Despite going into the 2009 season with four straight MAC titles, the Eagles went into the year without a clear no. 1 runner. However, Goodridges solid recruiting class and veterans such as Curtis Vollmar and Matt Hammersmith al-lowed the Eagles to finish second overall at the MAC Cham-pionship in Athens, Ohio, where three runners earned all-league accolades. Goodridge also has two runners pick up All-Region honors in Vollmar and then-freshman Terefe Ejigu. In 2008, Goodridge captured his fifth MAC title and EMUs fourth league championship in-a-row. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career

  • the head United States coach at the World Univer-sity Cross Country Championship in Graz, Austria. At Wake Forest, Goodridge coached the second-most Atlantic Coast Conference champion-ships of all sports in their history, and he coached the first ACC cross country team championship in school history as well as the first individual cross country champion. His 1989 Wake Forest cross country squad achieved the highest finish in that sports school history-it was third in the NCAA Championships, an ACC record. His Wake Forest cross country team finished first or second in the ACC for 10 consecutive years, winning four league titles and making seven NCAA appearances, and producing 35 All-ACC performers and four cross country All-Americans. In track, his team turned in the highest finish ever for Wake Forest in the ACC with a runner-up spot and eighth-place NCAA finish. Goodridge has coached the best cross coun-

and led the Eagles to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Regional for the second straight season. In 2007, Goodridges Eagles had anoth-er outstanding season, claiming their third MAC Championship title, the schools 13th overall. Addi-tionally, Josh Perrin won the individual MAC title in a time of 24:33. Five of Goodridges athletes were selected to All-MAC teams (Perrin, Josh Karanja, David Brent, Curtis Vollmar and Kyle Mena), while three were selected Academic All-MAC (Brent, Karanja and Wade Wines). Karanja earned a spot at the NCAA Championship meet after finishing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Champi-onship, the best performance by any MAC runner. The 2006 season was a banner year for Goodridge and his harriers. They repeated as MAC Champions and had the lowest point total ever by an Eagle team at the MAC meet. Six Eagles claimed All-MAC honors while senior Corey Nowitzke was the top finisher at both the MAC Championship and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. He finished 30th over-all at the NCAA National Championships and was named an All-American and Academic All- American. In 2005, EMUcaptured its 11th MAC Cham-pionship title. Nowitzke and Neal Naughton finished second and fifth, respectively. The Eagles went on to place fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Champi-onship to qualify for the NCAA Championship, where they finished 24th, with Nowitzke as the top runner. In 2002, after finishing second at the MAC Championship, the Eagles redeemed them-selves by finishing third at the NCAA Champion-ship, the highest place ever in school history. In his first season at the helm of the East-ern Michigan mens cross country program, Goo-drige directed the Eagles to a first-place show-ing at the MAC Championship. Additionally, Boaz Cheboiywo won the individual title at the NCAA Championship, the first ever by an Eastern harrier. Prior to coming to EMU, Goodridge was the head mens track and field and cross country coach at Wake Forest University from 1984-99 where he led the Demon Deacons to unparalleled success in the schools cross country and track and field history. He spent three years, 1979-82, as the head womens cross country coach and as-sistant track coach at Michigan State University. He also served as the head United States national coach at the 1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, and in 1986 as

try teams in school history at Michigan State (women-fourth place NCAA National Champi-onships), Wake Forest University (men-third place NCAAs and first ever ACC Champion-ship) and now EMU (third place NCAA National Championships). He is one of a small group of active coaches who have coached more than two top-three NCAA team national finishes. A native of New York City, Goodridge graduated from Long Island University in 1972 and earned his masters degree from the Univer-sity of Michigan in 1975. During his many years of involvement in coaching cross country, he has been an officer of national organizations, includ-ing serving as the vice president of the U.S. Mens Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association and a founder of the American Distance Club.

When i got to eMU in Jan. 1967, the team was wearing dark green singlets and dark green shorts. in that season, we ran a meet at Western Michigan University, and the finish line was beneath the balcony which was very dark. in the hurdle final, there were six men, three from Michigan state and three from eMU. MsUs uniforms were almost identical to ours. When the finish positions were announced, we got the short end of the stick. you could hardly see the runners under the dark balcony area, and they got the finish wrong. at that point, i de-cided to get uniforms that showed up better. Kansas, then, was a big name in collegiate track, and they wore pink shorts and powder blue singlets with pink lettering. everyone thought they were great. i decided to copy them and ordered orange shorts and green singlets with white lettering trimmed in orange. We wore them for about four years, but the regents decided that all of our teams should be wearing green and white. When they made us get rid of the orange and green, i ordered green and gold, colors i had always liked. at first, they werent going to let us use them, but i pointed out that our football team was wearing green and gold. our administration could hardly argue with me, since our gridders were wearing it too. We have worn it ever since, and it is known from coast to coast, as our men have done traditionally well nationally. it also differentiates us from MsU and ohio Universitys color schemes. The green and gold does show up well at the finish line, but nowadays they use com-puter cameras, so it is less of a problem as it was in the 60s and 70s.

green, WhiTe...anD yelloW? The EMU Eagles colors are green and white, but the track and cross country teams both feature yellow on their uniforms. There is a reason these teams stand out, and the history behind it goes back to 1967. EMU great Bob Parks offered some insight to the story be-hind how the yellow came about.

2009 season reCaP The 2009 season brought many suc-cesses for the Eastern Michigan Uni-versity mens cross country team. The Eagles began their season in North-ville, Mich., where they competed in the Run-ning Fit Detroit Titan Invitational. Curtis Voll-mar paced the Green and White, finishing first overall with a time of 19:54. Vollmar bested former EMU standout runner Corey Nowitzke (unattached) by 10 seconds to take home the title, and his performace led to a Mid-American Conference Mens Cross Country Runner of the Week Honor (Sept. 15, 2009). Behind Vollmar was then-redshirt freshman James Hughes (Man-chester, Mich.-Manchester) who finished fifth with a time of 20:38. Rounding out the top 10 was R.P. White, who placed seventh with a time of 20:47, while Matt Hammer-smith (Wolcott, Mich.-Prairie Heights) and Andrew Pfeiffer (Clarence, N.Y.-Clarence) placed eighth and ninth, respectively. EMU then headed to the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational at Forest Ak-ers East Golf Course on Sept. 18. Vollmar paced the Eagles for the second race in a row, finishing fifth overall with a time of 24:58. Hughes was the second EMU run-ner to cross the finish line, as he placed 12th overall with a time of 25:22. He was followed by White and Hammersmith, who finished 19th and 21st respectively. The Eagles then headed south to South Bend, Ind. on Oct. 2 for the Notre Dame In-vitational. Behind a runner-up performance by Vollmar, the Green and White placed third overall as a team with 93 points. Voll-mar continued to build off his already im-pressive senior campaign, as he finished second overall with a time of 24:40, just behind DePauls Matt Graham, who took home the title with a time of 24:34. had a solid performance of his own, taking 10th with a time of 25:12. White finished just one second behind UW-Steven Points Joel Heroux and Grand Valley States Anthony Witt, who finished eighth and ninth with a time of 25:11. Hammersmith was the next Eagle harrier to cross the finish line, plac-ing 12th overall with a time of 25:17, just five seconds out of a top-10 finish. Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington -Wellington-New Zealand) had a solid race in his EMU debut, taking 34th overall with a time of 25:39. Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) and Hughes were the next two

Eagles to cross the finish line, as they fin-ished 37th and 38th with a time of 25:44. After a solid showing at the Notre Dame Invite, the Green and White took third place at the 8,000-meter Michigan Inter-collegiate in Grand Rapids, Mich. (Oct. 9). The Eagles earned 66 points, and again were led by Vollmar his fourth-consecutive top-five finish by taking fifth overall with a time of 25:19. His efforts led to a second MAC Runner of the Week honor on Oct. 13. Hughes was the next EMU harrier to cross the finish line, as he ran a solid race and finished eighth with a time of 25:31. White rounded out the top-10, braving the sloppy conditions to take 10th with a time of 25:44. Hammersmith placed just behind White, taking 13th with a time of 25:48. The Eagles then headed to Bowling Green, Ohio. EMU placed fourth overall at the 2009 Falcon Invitational on, Oct. 17, at the BGSU Cross Country Course. The squad took fourth with 124 points, finishing behind Oakland University (122), Malone University (61), and Kent State University (39). Pfeiffer was the first EMU harrier to cross the fin-ish line, as he placed eighth overall with a time of 25:07.2. Following Pfeiffer was Hen-drix, who finished with a time of 25:26.5, good for 16th place. Justin Huey (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) placed 51st with a time of 26:28.4 followed by Sergei Anderson (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) who took 58th. The EMU Classic would be the next chal-lenge for the Eagles, which took place at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. In the 10,000-meter event, Vollmar bested out several former teammates to finish first with a time of 32:08.00. Vollmar edged former teammates and EMU standouts Josh Karanja and Corey Nowitzke, who fin-ished second and third, respectively. Voll-mar again clinched MAC Runner of the Week honors. This marked the third MAC honor for Vollmar in 2009. Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater) also had a stellar race in the mens 10K event, finish-ing eighth overall with a time of 33:23.00. After capturing its fourth consecutive MAC championship last season, EMU looked for number five on Oct. 31, when the Eagles headed to Athens, Ohio for the 2009 MAC Cross Country Championship. The Eagles fin-ished in second place in a hard-fought race, scoring 55 points, putting them behind Kent State University, who took home the cham-

pionship. Head Coach John Goodridge was very proud of his teams efforts.

Kent State is very deserving of this years MAC title, said Goodridge. That being said I remain very proud of my team in how they have devel-oped and how hard they raced today. It was no surprise to see Vollmar pace the Eagles with an All-MAC first team performance. He finished forth with a time of 25:57.5. Vollmar moved up two spots from his finish last year at the MAC Championship, but his time was over a minute slower from last years time, which was a common theme in this years league championship. Hughes was the next EMU harrier to cross the finish line, taking ninth to earn second team All-MAC accolades with a time of 26:12.6. Hammersmith also earned second team All-MAC honors, as his time of 26:18.6 was good for 10th place. The 2009 season came to an end after the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 14, in Bloomington, Ind. Finish-ing in the top 25 and earning All-Region honors were Vollmar and Ejigu, who finished 17th and 25th, respectively. The University of Wisconsin took home the Great Lakes Regional title, plac-ing two in the top five to finish with just 62 points. The Eagles placed second among all Mid-American Conference schools, as the MAC champions from Kent State University placed sixth with 192 points. The Eagles also finished second among Michigan schools, as Michigan State University took run-ner-up with 128 points. EMU bested Washtenaw County rival the University of Michigan by one spot, as the Wol-verines took 10th with 259 points.

The Mid-american Conference Providing leadership in education and in diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 64th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggres-sive Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher , the eighth commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has responded to the ever changing landscape of membership issues and member standards in the fast-paced environment of collegiate athletics. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events football (Detroits Ford Field), volleyball (Toledos SeaGate Centre), mens and womens basketball (Clevelands Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akrons Firestone Stadium) and most recently baseball (Chillicothes VA Memorial Stadium). MAC football produced three bowl teams in 2007, the giving the MAC 14 bowl berths in the past four years with 10 differ-ent league institutions represented during that time. The 2007 season also welcomed the addition of Temple University to the East Division and the Owls responded with a league-leading defense and a 4-4 conference mark in their inaugural MAC season. A total of nine MAC football players were selected in the 2008 NFL draft, making it the second most selectees for the league since the NFL went to seven rounds in 1994. Four Mid-American Conference mens basketball programs went on to postseason play this season as Kent State (NCAA Tournament), Akron (National Invitation Tournament), Miami (College Basketball Invitational) and Ohio (College Basketball Invitational) all made an appearance in postseason tourna-ments. There were a total of two womens basketball programs that reached the postseason as Miami (NCAA Tournament) and Bowling Green (Womens NIT) represented the MAC in postseason play. Kent State mens basketball program was ranked in the top 25 in the regular season for the first time in school history. The Golden Flashes were 23rd in the Associated Press poll and 24th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, both of which were released on February 25th.The Flashes earned their 10th consecutive 20-win season in addition to picking up the 1,000th victory in the 92-year history of the program. The last time the MAC had a team appear in the top 25 during the regular season was in 2001 when Ball State was ranked for four straight weeks (Nov. 26-Dec. 17), with the Cardinals climbing as high as 15th in the AP poll on Dec. 3. The Golden Flashes also made headlines in mens golf this past season as KSU finished alone in sixth place at the NCAA Championship to earn the highest finish in the programs storied history. MAC wrestlers also continued to shine on the national stage as Central Michigan senior 197-pounder Wynn Michalak finished runner-up at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and the Chippewas finished tied for seventh in the overall team competition. From Super Bowl quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (Miami Uni-versity), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburg (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics.MAC Milestones In March of 2006, former MAC commissioner Rick Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President Len Komoroski announced that the Mid-American Conference Mens and Womens Basketball Tournaments would remain in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through 2011. The MAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 mens and womens teams

to Cleveland beginning in 2007. The MAC also co-hosted the 2007 Womens Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after suc-cessfully hosting a 2006 NCAA Womens Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena.History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and mens and womens basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) , Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 mens basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Womens sports were brought into the conferences structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, bas-ketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and tennis.
