About Roslindale Open StudiosNow in its 5th year the Roslindale Open Studios is an annual signature event sponsored by the Roslindale Arts Alliance that draws people into our community from all over the state. For two days in November, local and visiting artists enthusiastically share their wonderful art in home studios, group spaces and businesses.
This year over 97 artists will be selling and displaying in over 44 locations throughout Roslindale. Mediums represented include: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, fiber, ceramics, mosaics, mixed media, sculpture, music, jewelry and more. The event is free and open to the public.
Participating mixed media/photography artist and Vice President of the Roslindale Arts Alliance, Kasey Davis Appleman has this to say about her experience in Roslindale Open Studios, “It’s been the perfect opportunity for me to meet neigh-bors and to share my skill and passion for fine art. Participating as a ‘home studio’ provides a unique opportunity to show in the same
spot where I create my work. This is a very excit-ing aspect of the Open Studios event. Visitors are able to chat directly with the artists who make the work and are able to learn about the various methods and materials fine artists use. Here we have art appreciation in action, not to mention fine art for sale without the hefty gallery prices!”
Highlights at this year’s event include:
Preview Show and Reception on November 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Longfellow School, 885 South Street, Roslindale. Here you can meet the artists, get a bro-
chure and map and see work from home studio artists. Light refresh-ments will be served sponsored by Equal Exchange and Roslindale Village Main Street.
Free kids activities sponsored by the Roslindale Arts Alliance and the Girls Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts in the Cafeteria at Sacred Heart School, 1035 Canterbury Street, Roslindale.Enter to win a gift certificate for a fabulous dinner at a Roslindale restaurant (see page 19 for details).

In 2007, local artists established the Roslindale Arts Alliance to give the Roslindale Community a cultural voice and identity. The mission of RAA is twofold: (1) to sup-port local artists by providing opportunities for them to display, sell and teach their art and (2) give the community access to see and participate in art. We advocate for all art mediums — visual and performing. We are a nonprofit organization under the 501 3(C) financial services of Community Arts Advocates.
Some of the opportunities we provide to local artists are:
• Teaching opportunities at the Roslindale and Archdale Community Centers, Boston Public Libraries and Sacred Heart School, Roslindale
• Exhibit opportunities at local businesses such as Bangkok Cafe, mj’s Pizza and Boschetto Bakery
• Selling opportunities at the Annual Roslindale Open Studios and the Roslindale Farmers’ Market
• Publicity and networking through email newsletters, press releases, It’s All About Arts Cable TV program and a web site.
