2008 Data Quality review• 2008 was the year of the biggest accomplishments in
data quality so far.
• Data Quality is now a well-established as a topic for the leading user companies, data pools and Member Organisations engaged in GDSN.
• In addition to that ‘newcomers’ to the Network identify data quality as a key element for the success of their initiatives.
• Greater understanding of the Data Quality Framework for the general public.

2008 Data Quality review
Achievements in 2008:
• Established solid vision and leadership for the Data Quality Steering Committee
• Developed new support tools for the Data Quality Framework (scorecards, implementation guides, website ‘getting started guide’).
• Data Quality Programme successfully launched and nearing completion.
• Replicas of the ‘Data Quality Challenge’ being planned

Driving the effortsThe great progress made on data quality is
based on a series of important realisations by the industry:
• There is no ‘magical’ solution to data quality, and the Data Quality Framework by itself is not the ultimate answer
• Collaboration, Collaboration, Collaboration• Value to be found in developing specific areas, one
at a time• Data Quality is not just for GDSN• GDSN adoption hand in hand with data quality
adoption13

What lays ahead in 2009?
2009 will see further expansion on the groundwork created in 2008.
Further work on the Data Quality Challenge:• Completion of the first phase of the Data Quality Challenge• DQC replicas across different communities• Planning and definition for the DQC phase 2• Development of better documentation, tools
Further integration of data quality into other sectors
14

What lays ahead in 2009?• Development of an industry ‘benchmark’ for data
quality
• Expansion and improvement of data quality education and training resources
• Further collaboration and support to data pools and GS1 MOs developing data quality with their communities.
• Wider adoption of the Data Quality Framework’s self-assessment procedure.

Thank you and best wishes for 2009!!!

Global Product Classification (GPC)
• Deployed GPC release 30 June 2008 on 13 Dec 2008 into Beta and Production
• Latest GPC standards can be found at: http://www.gs1.org/services/gsmp/kc/gpc/index.html
• A decision has been made to run GPC and UNSPSC in parallel and separately, while maintaining interoperability. • GPC will remain in place providing the necessary classification
depth required for GDSN. • Both user communities have access to the other system without
having to invest effort in their own mapping.
• GS1 will release a web-accessible mapping tool in English (and possibly later in several other languages), and remains committed to maintaining this alignment into the future to meet the needs of our global community.
• In 2009 new GPC strategy to be developed18
