BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS
1983 Studbook for Rare Leopards, Panthera pardus ssp Alan H. Shoemaker
Riverbanks Zoological Park, Columbia, South Carolina
Numbers of most rare subspecies of leopards held in captivity increased during 1983. Persian leopards increased by 19 % during 1983, Chinese leopards by 14 % , and Ceylon leopards by 57%. Only Arnur leopards experienced a decline (7%) during this period, a situation caused primarily by the loss of several aged, wild- born males held in Russian zoos. The number of ancestors (founders) of the four subspecies’ captive populations continues to be small, but several new founders have been acquired and should produce young during 1984. The disappearance of animals after transfer to animal dealers, primarily in Europe, continues to plague these studbooks, a situation caused by the inability of zoos to absorb all the surplus offspring and the lack of cooperation from several animal dealers.

INTRODUCTION
Since 1974, four subspecies of leopards, Puntheru purdus ssp., which are rare in captivity, have been included within international studbook programs [Shoemaker, 1979, 19801. These studbooks of pedigrees cover the Persian, or Afghan, leopard, Pp suxicolor [Pocock, 19271; the Amur, or Far Eastern, leopard, Pp orientulis [Schlegel, 18571; the Chinese leopard, Pp juponensis [Gray, 18621; and the Ceylon leopard, Pp kotiyu [Deraniyagala, 19561. As a result of these studbooks, several subspecific hybridizations were identified, and the individual animals were removed from the captive gene pool. The number of owners of one or more of these races has also increased in favor of other races or intraspecific hybrids or other similar-sized felids. The last studbook was published in 1983 [Shoemaker, 1983al.
MANAGEMENT
In 1982, the captive populations of pedigree leopards were analyzed to obtain demographic information for all four subspecies [Shoemaker, 1983bl. This study included data on their population size between 1954 and 1980, the age structure of these races from 1970 to 1980, and the fertility of each race since its entrance into captivity.
These analyses generally demonstrate successful propagation and a population increase through the second generation. Fluctuations have occurred thereafter, in part because of the popularity of certain races over others. Competition for space with other forms of leopards and medium-sized felids has also been a limiting factor. Since 1980, propagation of all four races has increased, and a large number of young (under 3 years of age) have entered the captive gene pool.
In a related study, the possible effects of inbreeding was examined [Shoemaker, 19821. The number of young Persian and Chinese leopards was sufficiently large (97 and 293 young, respectively) for statistical analyses to reveal that closely related individuals were more likely to die prior to maturity than unrelated specimens. Chinese leopards, when bred as siblings in an uninterrupted line through five gener- ations, reached a point at which no young were successfully reared.
Following this study, a number of owners have taken a new look at their management plans. Several collections have been restructured to reduce inbreeding. Young animals with unusual and underrepresented ancestors have been relocated to other geographical areas lacking these genealogies. In addition, several zoos have established multiple breeding groups of a single race. The studbook keeper is also being consulted prior to acquiring new animals for breeding programs, a development that could have immeasurably benefited the rarest subspecies, the Amur leopard, had it been instigated ten years earlier.
PERSIAN LEOPARD
The Persian, or Afghan, leopard, Pp saxicolor, derives its captive ancestry from seven North Iranian and three Afghan individuals. Although these two lineages had been maintained separately during the early part of their captive history, their small separate gene pools, coupled with the high demand for young, caused both “lines” to be intermingled. Only the ancestors of two Iranian specimens originally imported by the Cincinnati Zoo have yet to be widely distributed, but this trend is also being changed.
Rare Leopard Studbook 171
During 1983, this race experienced a 19% population increase. Overall, the subspecies now numbers 68 individuals (37.31), up from 57 (29.28) in 1982. This subspecies is the most widely distributed form of studbook-kept leopard, with breed- ing populations now found in North America, Europe, the USSR, and Australia (Tables 1, 2).

AMUR LEOPARD
In nature the Amur, or Far Eastern, leopard is by far the rarest pedigree leopard [Abramov and Pikunov, 19711. It has been listed in the Red Data Book as endangered since 1972 [Goodwin and Holloway, 19721, and little is known about its status in the wild. Overall the captive population is small, 43 (24.19) and it is the only subspecies to have experienced a decline (7%) during 1983.
The number of wild ancestors in the race’s population is only six, most of which trace their ancestry back to a pair of animals imported by the Frankfurt Zoo. During
172 Shoemaker
1983, however, two significant events occurred. The last wild-born male was relo- cated from the Moscow Zoo to the Frankfurt Zoo. Not only is this a significant elevation in international cooperation, but this male has since bred, and his offspring, once distributed to other collectors, should greatly reduce potential inbreeding prob- lems. Also, a female containing a new founder originally imported by Center Hill was shipped to the Mulhouse Zoo in France where the third largest collection of Arnur leopards is located (Tables 3, 4).
CHINESE LEOPARD
The Chinese leopard, Pp japonensis, has been the most abundant pedigree leopard maintained in captivity. From 6 prolific ancestors, the population has grown to 100 (50.50) animals in 1983, a 14% increase over the 1982 population of 88 (42.46) (Tables 5, 6).
Although ten founders are present in the total population, the majority of living Chinese leopards in Europe derive their ancestry from two pairs of animals, one each imported by the Leipzig Zoo and Tiepark Berlin. A third pair was imported by the London Zoo, but their offspring are less represented in existing lineages.
Six animals is a very small background on which to base a breeding project, and inbreeding depression has been noted in closely related young. The only group of founders affecting the captive population are a pair imported by the San Diego Zoo, but few offspring have entered the captive gene pool; none are represented in European collections. The first young (0308) from this lineage arrived in the Nurn- berg Zoo in 1983.
The large collection of Chinese leopards at the Omaha Zoo has resumed breeding. These animals are totally unrepresented in other collections. An adult female (0324) from this group was sent to the Winnipeg Zoo in 1983 and hopefully will breed in 1984.
Rare Leopard Studbook 173
In 1983 the San Diego Zoo imported a captive-born male (0375) from the Chengtu Zoo in China. This new founder is derived from parents captured near Wu Shan in Anwei Province, and Shun Hua in Shensi Province. This individual, and the breeding group in Omaha are important to future breeding progress and new or existing owners are urged to incorporate animals from these collections when seeking new breeders.
CEYLON LEOPARD
Probably the most abundant of the pedigree leopards in the wild, Ceylon leopards, Pp kotiyu, are found in collections on all continents. The founder size is ten animals, some of which are still alive and reproducing, but intermingling of the two main lineages is not common. The captive population increased 57% during 1983 from 28 (12.16) to 44 (22.22) animals (Tables 7, 8).
This race suffers from a proportionately large percentage of nonparticipating owners. Private owners rarely communicate to the studbook keeper on the status of their animals, which are essentially lost to the captive gene pool. The same is true for
174 Shoemaker
many animals that are sold to animal dealers. This practice, which has also been a problem for the Chinese leopard, needs to be solved by better management practices. Several genetically rare specimens have disappeared when they could have greatly aided the captive population.
