LARGER testing Tests of a Re-‐cycled Airliner
George Seyfang 19th April 2015
Concept -‐-‐ Re-‐cycling old airliner components into economic ThiiinK-‐sail units
Model with Flap in wind tunnel
Model on suspended plaBorm PlaBorm rotates to change flap angle Load cells measure LiF and Drag forces Electrical wire to motor inside the rotor -‐-‐ up to 4500 RPM with liJle vibraMon Tunnel speed up to 10m/s CL and CD based on rotor area L x D
IniMal Test Data (similar to previous results)
Rotor TesMng Improvements
• Rotor has electric motor inside rotor to reduce vibraMon
• Rotor is supported with a top bearing to reduce vibraMon
• Rotor and Flap are mounted on hanging plaBorm to reduce fricMon
• TesMng is now possible at significantly higher rotor speed raMos (w/v)
• B. L. trips on rotor reduce (but do not eliminate) Reynolds No. effects
• Usual caveats on accuracy of small-‐scale tesMng.....
Comments on Re-‐cycled Airliner Concept
• Basic concept seems to work !
• Body/Rotor should be circular to about 3% +/-‐ • Body/Rotor need not be constant diameter cylinder • Wing/Flap shape is OK • Components do not need to be very smooth
• PracMcaliMes over mounMng, weather protecMon etc
